Indiana vs MSU Post Game Thread

And coach was running 0 plays to get him looks. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

0 plays? I happen to recall the ball and Noah being on the same side of the court multiple times, but the defense was pushing him off the block so the pass wasn't going inside to be effective. Heck, Noah even received a few passes on the elbow, but didn't do much with them.

Saw people on the game thread blaming Noah's lack of touches in the second half as the reason we lost, along with smatterings of Yogi being selfish for putting up jump shots and poor clock management.

Here is what I saw in the game: 14 missed layups. 14. That accounts for 28 points if I'm doing math properly. Indiana lost by 5. IU hits 3 layups, it wins the game.

Noah wasn't getting touches in the paint because the defense wasn't allowing it. I have no idea why any of you think the team wasn't trying to get it to him. Go back and watch the tape.

Yogi's jump shots and the clock management go back to the missed layups. You make the easy shots, hard decisions don't have to be made.

That's just my take.

The problem with feeding the post isn't new.  The same thing happened with Zeller.  At some point we have to stop looking at the players.

Yogi being out of control and forcing shots trying to play hero, I blame on Yogi.  If he's being told to do that, it's a different story and pretty concerning IMO.

There were several things that stood out to me. JH with great look to DD with about 9 to go and IU up and no finish, turnover to be exact, Yogi who makes a great dish to JH cutting to the rim and no finish, so there are 4 points off 2 assists and we don't score. I agree TW and JH needed to play more 2nd half minutes, Noah needs more hi pick and roll or pick and pop with Yogi! Let's see how this team takes tonight and goes forward have a very winnable game coming up, if we learn and mature and a good stretch of 5 games where we can go 5-1. Let's go IU!

There were two things that aggravated me in the second half.  With about 12 minutes to go, Crean pulled Jeremy who you could tell was the life of the team at that point.  That is when their run started.  A few people even said that during the game thread when we were still leading.  The other thing that bothered me was we got away from running the one play we continually ran they weren't stopping in the first half.  We rotated players in and out of the post, it wasn't just Noah in the first half.  Then that player would kick it to the perimeter, and they would run their weave around a high screen until one player had a lane.  Yes, I know we missed 14 layups in the second half, but most were very contested.  It wasn't like we were missing bunnies.  That play we ran in the first half got us to the line play after play if we didn't hit a free throw.  MSU did start to take Noah away by running a weak side player into him so he couldn't get a quick pass in the post.  Izzo is smart enough to realize when it isn't there quick, we reverse.  That small chip in the paint won them the game, IMO.  If we were more patient getting it to Noah, and letting him make the play, I think we win.
21-6 run.... Zero timeouts called during that span. I'm not critiquing,I just honestly don't understand why you wouldn't call a timeout and settle the troops.

The crowd got loud, Harris hit a three, got louder, three point play, got louder, three point play, blew the roof off the place. Hoosiers looked defeated and disoriented during that stretch. Why would a coach not call a timeout to settle everyone down? Especially just to calm the crowd down. Coaches do it against IU in Assembly hall all the time.
That is my biggest complaint with Crean, his use of TOs, others are relevant but none hot seat worthy
Yogi was horrible, selfish, 4-13 FGs, had only 3 assists, all 3 were in the first 10 minutes of the game, 3 TOs. Noah needs to get the ball WWWWWWAAAAYYYYY more. Howard and AE did nothing but hurt this team, Howards rebounding was pathetic to watch, as were AEs TOs. Jeremy looked lost on offense as usual but played very good D, yet our stud of a coach played Howard, AE, DD, and Hanner over him the whole 2nd half (GENIUS). Our halfcourt "offense" is a complete and utter joke, no movement at all, NEVER GETS THE BALL DOWN LOW ( HAPPENED WITH ZELLER TOO). If Vonleh leaves (I would if I were him) and Hanner has to start next year were are doomed, he is still horrible. Crean got outcoached once again (BIG SURPRISE), MSU went on a 20+ -6 run and guess how many TOs Crean used, thats right, ZERO.
What will it take to get Charlie out of here? I already donate money to the site, how much more do you need?

Good lord.

We lost by five on the road to the #3 team in the country with exactly one available player on our roster who averaged more than 10 minutes per game last year. I wish we would have won; it would've been really, really fantastic. But reading your post one would think we did next to nothing right.

Your posts do not cause me to worry about the Indiana basketball team, they cause me to worry about...

you.

What rule am I breaking, or what did I say that was out of line? Nothing, exactly.

No need to worry about me man, thanks for caring though... And it's not even the fact that we lost (I was expecting to lose by a lot more) its the fact that we made the same stupid mistakes that we've been making all season over again and lost a game that we could've easily won, this was a game that we needed to win.

Overall, I think Crean did a did decent job.  He obviously had the team prepared, and the game plan was working until Izzo adjusted.  Now, there is no way a coach should let the other team go on a 21-6 run and not call a timeout.  I also think he should've called a press earlier and had them foul sooner instead of letting 20 seconds run off the clock.

So, yeah I'd say decent.  Those two things keep me from saying good.

Agree with your post. I will add that some other things got to me this game. Jeff Howard instead of Jeremy in the 2nd, I felt he deserved it. Secondly, which you always point out, is getting the ball to the post. Yes, we did in the first, and we were doing well for how the game was going. 2nd half, it went back to no inside ball except for 3 or 4 passes. Yes, MSU did a better job at defending it, but you have to keep going to it. Stick Austin on the far corner, and the other three up top away from Noah.

When Noah attacked, the defense collapses, which allowed for cutters and open shots. Unfortunately, the team never did that. Noah played a very good game, but he didn't get the ball enough. He's our best option right now, and IU has to go through him. With the rest of the team not playing well and missing contested lay ups, Noah is a must!

Speaking of Austin, I did like one thing I saw from him tonight.  In the first there was a play where the ball went to Noah, the D collapsed on him and he kicked it out to Austin and Austin shot it with confidence.  For as bad as he's missed some shots in his time here it was good to see him shoot one confidently with the D closing on him.

I am hoping that is a light bulb moment for him!

Obviously disappointed we didn't win but was happy with our effort/energy. Glad to see most people recognizing JH contribution. I would have liked to seen him more down the stretch. The long scoring drought in the second half doomed us. What I have seen especially the last three games is so indicative of a young team. Our future is bright. Go HOOSIERS!

I'd like to add this to Austin's performance. I see him doing the grunt work. I saw him have active hands on defense and make disruptive deflections. I really like to see him active under the defensive boards. His block out usually pushes the offensive player completely off the court. Allows us to rebound and kick the ball out faster. I want to see him make himself available as an outlet when the defense collapses on Noah. Loved the way he shot the three ball. He needs to have his body positioned and ready to confidently catch and shoot. He can do this.

I want to see this too, I'm a big fan of Etherington, I think the kid can do pretty well if coached and utilized properly.
