*gets tip from Demo listens to Electric Magnolia Co album picks up guitar starts trying to play “Just Be Simple”

At the moment would probably add that record to my desert island list you had us kicking around a few months back.

What a weird weird show.  But I'm so happy to have finally seen Tool live.

It didn't match the hype, but I went into it hearing a lot of hype.

Also, I think I reached that age where I'll probably buy two tickets to the left of me and two tickets to the right.  No, really i might.  Too many drunk jerkwads can ruin a show.

Yeah, it’s quite the epiphany when you go from being the drunk jerkwad to being the one annoyed by them.

Hey guys, at an attempt at shameless self-promotion, feel free to check out the album I released a few days ago.

10 songs written by me, recorded by me, mixed by me, mastered by me, and all instruments played by me, with the exception of a few here and there by fellow BTown Banners member VauxhallandIU.

Stuhoo, I know you'll probably appreciate some of it.

I'm really liking this- will play more on my way home. Thanks for sharing!!

Okay Demo

This! Ear worm chords and production + raggedy-@$$ vocals is a killer combination.

Was listening to Sojourner this morning. If Hank Williams had dropped this in about 1952 I’m convinced it would be a country standard.

“Tonight, when I am rolling over the earth’s most lonesome ground, I will think of all the ways next time I will try not to let you down”

F***, that is so real.

Two things dominating my ‘while I’m working’ feed: Magnolia/Molina and…

A band I’m hard-pressed to understand how I’ve ignored all these years. Always knew people worshipped Paul Weller but never tried to learn why. The Jam is a incredible group of musicians and Weller is a great songwriter. All Mod Cons and Sound Affects are lyrically and musically superb albums.

Weller took despair and decay on the streets of London, wrote about it with gallows humor, and paired it with razor tight arrangements.

A police car and a screaming siren -
A pnuematic drill and ripped up concrete -
A baby wailing and stray dog howling -
The screech of brakes and lamplights blinking -
That's entertainment.”

Highly recommended.

I’ll ruminate  on this loss tomorrow. Instead, gonna bust out a fantastic little indie rock band. Love these guys, Lisa Walker is a great vocalist and they have a wonderful, varied catalogue.

As always, super cool mixing/production on the guitars.

Wussy is a reliably excellent band—their whole catalog is kinda really really good.

According to a UK website, the saddest song of all time is ... "Everybody Hurts" by REM.

Below is their list of 30. I'm a little perplexed how "Cat's in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin isn't included. Whether your relationship with your father is complicated or not, if he has passed from Earth -- it'll get you.

Also, I'm a big John Mellencamp fan. He often gets overlooked when it comes to lists like this -- and as a songwriter in general, I think. This is one of his that can bring a tear. The violin -- wow.

I LOVE Jackie Brown by Mellencamp. Longest Days is his other "sad but true" gem that I really like.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wanna hear the darkest, most affecting thing I've ever laid ears on?

Try Alex Chilton when he was truly in a desolate place. Chris Bell was gone to Europe and religious conversion, Andy Hummel had gone legit businessman, his Boxtops $$ was running out, his drug and alcohol fueled depression was raging, and Jody Stephens, being relatively well-adjusted, was sent out of the room.

"Holocaust" off of Third/Sister Lovers is an extraordinary work of art--four minutes of complete emotional destruction:

Personally, I'm also kinda partial to Ray Charles singing Hard Times. Starts with a slow boil; ends with a soulful wail to the heavens:

Since any such list without an Elliott Smith or Neutral Milk Hotel song is probably suspect, I’d throw this one in the conversation:

And this is probably just lazy on my part, but brilliant and wrenching is brilliant and wrenching, no matter how cliche:

milk Hotel

George Jones is an absolute badass. Damn he’s got some good stuff.

You guys want to see what might be the single most ‘rock and roll you can’t make this sh!t up’ concert video out there?

In 1978 The Cramps played a set at the California State Mental Hospital. Who booked this? I have no idea, but It. Was. Genius.

Quoteth Lux Interior, “We’re The Cramps and we’re from New York City. We drove 3,000 miles to play for you people and somebody told me you people are crazy. I’m not so sure about that. You seem to be alright.”

Launches into psychobilly madness of The Way I Walk and Human Fly. Patients dance frantically. Enjoy:
