Class of '66 Old Fart

IU Baseball @ Purdue - May 3-5, 2024

Recommended Posts

Hoosiers lose the opener 7-4.

Keyster started but was relieved after getting just 1 out in the 1st inning by Buhr.  Keyster walked the leadoff batter, committed a throwing error on a sac. bunt and then gave up a 2-run double.  Buhr threw 4.2 solid innings scattering 5 hits; no BB and 3 strikeouts.  Risedorph took over to start the 6th but allowed 2 runs in the 7th and 3 in the 8th and was pulled for Tonghini.

We scored a run to open the game but PUke responded with 2.  We tied it up at 2-2 on a Cerny RBI double in the 6th but PUke scored 2 in the 7th to take a 4-2 lead then a Taylor solo HR in the 8th made it 4-3.  PUke scored 3 of its own in the 8th and we could only bring in 1 in our 9th.

Win 10-2 on Saturday.

Woke up late with six runs in the 7th and four in the 9th.

Mathison had a three-run HR and Mitchell a two-run single.

Bothwell throws five innings of 1-run relief (allowed 5 hits) to get the win.

Sets up the rubber game tomorrow. First pitch at 1 p.m.

Purdue pitchers basically imploded in the ninth inning and IU took advantage of the kind gesture to walk right through the proverbial door and steal a win. Walks, an error, and an infield single that could have been another error but was not scored that way did PU in. Hoosiers had trouble hitting the Boilermakers struggling starters but absolutely took advantage of a bullpen that could not do anything right all weekend.

Still lots of work to do for NCAA Tourney bid (probably 6-2 down the stretch) but have a chance which is more than I could have said a few weeks ago with an RPI near 60. The two weekday games matter again starting with Cincy in Bloomington Tuesday night.

IU absolutely pummeled the ball all weekend. Taylor himself hit 3 balls 105+ that were all caught. Purdue had 4-5 outstanding plays defensively on the weekend, and a serious amount of luck.

We have up 9 ER runs all weekend.

Pitching staff has had some guys step up recently. Still need 2-3 more to find v their groove. Keyster, Kraft and one more.

Cincy (27-21) but only (7-15) on the road so it's a good thing we're playing in Bloomington although the weather forecast is crappy.  Scattered t'storms predicted throughout the day and into the evening.
