Class of '66 Old Fart

(2024) - SG Jaeden Mustaf to Georgia Tech

Recommended Posts

NFHS is great for watching our targets until things like this happen.  Watching Mustaf's Saturday night game and with 4:22 remaining in the 4th Q and Carmel Christian trailing Myers Park 46-41, the game stream abruptly ended.  Carmel Christian ended up winning 52-51 with Mustaf finishing with 21p and 5r.  Carmel Christian is the #1 ranked private school and Myers Park the #1 ranked public school in N. Carolina.  Carmel Christian is the defending  4A private school state champion and Myers Park is the #25 ranked team in MaxPreps national rankings so this game was definitely a battle of heavyweights.

When the game stream ended, I had Mustaf with 13p; 4r; 1a; 0s; 0b; 2t.  6-12 FG; 1-3 on 3s; 3-5 FG.  At this point in the game, every one of his attempted shots came off his own dribble.  He is no way a catch and shoot player but is a shot creator.

Been operating under the assumption that Mustaf and Passmore were kind of an either/or recruiting proposition. From watching Mustaf and now seeing Passmore up close, that’s not right. Passmore’s a straight line finisher/catch and shoot wing. His best fit is in a 3-guard with 2 guys who can facilitate. Mustaf’s a ball-oriented secondary facilitator. Theoretically, if you had a 4 guard rotation of Cupps, Newton, Mustaf and Passmore, that would work really, really well.

In this theoretical arrangement is your PG depth chart Cupps/Mustaf, a la this year’s X/JHS? Where you start both but they stagger minutes?

Part of the question here is that I’m not sure what Newton is at the college level. Like him, but not sure the role on offense.
