Class of '66 Old Fart Posted January 15, 2022 Posted January 15, 2022 Hope we don't have to play another game without Mackenzie but I'm not overly optimistic. Haven't heard any more about her injury but during the Nebraska game Austin Render commented that she was noticeably limping. The Barn Burner Trophy is on the line as No. 6/5 Indiana visits Purdue on Sunday. Tipoff at Mackey Arena is set for 2 p.m. ET on FS1. #6/5 INDIANA (13-2, 5-0 B1G) AT PURUDE (11-5, 2-3 B1G) Sunday, January 16, 2022 • 2 p.m. ET Mackey Arena • West Lafayette, Ind. Broadcast: FS1 (Bob Brainerd, Meghan McKeown) Radio: WHCC 105.1 FM (Austin Render) Live Stats: Statbroadcast Social Media: Facebook | Twitter | Instagram ABOUT THE COACHES Indiana Purdue Teri Moren Katie Geralds Career Record: 360-212 (19th Season) Career Record: 239-55 (9th season) Indiana Record: 161-82 (8th Season) Purdue Record: 11-5 (First Season) ABOUT THE BOILERMAKERS Purdue snapped a five-game win streak the last time out, falling to Iowa at home on Thursday. Sophomore guard Madison Layden's 12.5 points per game leads the team's offense that averages 70.1 points per game. Junior guard Abbey Ellis adds 10.5 points per game while junior guard Jeanae Terry leads the way on the glass with 5.8 boards per contest. SERIES HISTORY Purdue leads 53-36 LAST MEETING 3/6/21 - W, 74-59 (Bloomington, Ind.) NOTES Sunday's game will serve as the annual Barn Burner Trophy game where Indiana holds a five-game win streak. The Hoosiers trail in the all-time series that started in 1994, 9-19, but hold its longest ever win streak in the series currently, which began in 2017. Indiana comes off a 72-65 win over Nebraska at home on Thursday night to extend a variety of win streaks. It marks its eight-straight win of the season, 14 straight Big Ten games dating back to Jan. 4, 2020. Additionally, an 11-game road win streak is on the line - which is currently the second active win streak away from home in the country. Only FGCU (24) has a longer streak in Division I. Against the Huskers, senior guard Grace Berger led the way for Indiana with a season-high 22 points and team-high seven rebounds. Senior forward Aleksa Gulbe added 17 points and four steals while graduate student guard Nicole Cardaño-Hillary scored 13 points, six rebounds and three steals. Defense continues to be the name of the game for the Hoosiers, who are leading the Big Ten in scoring defense. The staunch defense limits opponents to just 57.1 points per game as not one of IU's 15 opponents have yet to score over 70 points. UP NEXT Indiana hosts Michigan State on Wednesday night in the annual Head to the Hall game. Tickets are $1 online and at the door. Tip is set for 7 p.m. ET. Hoosierfan1901 Posted January 15, 2022 Posted January 15, 2022 Even without Holmes, they did pretty fine against a pretty solid Nebraska team. Even though 4Q was an complete mess, but they didn’t lose their composure in the final minute mamasa and Aaron 2 Quote
Aaron Posted January 15, 2022 Posted January 15, 2022 If there is any game for Mac to be out its this one, as Purdue has only one big they play and is mediocre and everyone else is a guard. MSU's best players by far (Nia Clouden and Matilda Ekh) are also guards and their bigs are mediocre. If Mac needs it, I would rest her next two games and try to get her back for Iowa where you absolutely need her. While Caitlyn Clark is the probably the best player in the Big Ten and a guard for the Hawks, her sidekicks McKenna Warnock and Monica Cinzano are bigs and really really good as well. Hoosiers only have two tough games in next month and can probably survive losing only at Michigan and Iowa without her (Michigan's best player is a big in Naz Hilmon who along with Clark is best player in conference and Emily Kizer is also a solid big). Rest of competition is incredibly mediocre at best as our their bigs. Need Mac by February 15 at absolute latest for four game gauntlet to close season with at Nebraska, NW, Iowa and at Maryland. Four good teams with good bigs. Class of '66 Old Fart and LockdownD 2 Quote
Hoosierfan1901 Posted January 15, 2022 Posted January 15, 2022 I don’t know too much about this Purdue team, only that they have a first year coach in Geralds Quote
TheWatShot Posted January 15, 2022 Posted January 15, 2022 Geralds was actually supposed to take over next season. Versyp resigned back in September amidst a university investigation of her behavior. It's kind of strange how our women's team and the Purdue men's team are on similar levels, while our men's team and their women's team kind of mirror each other. mamasa and Aaron 2 Quote

Historically it is a great comparison, as IU Men and Purdue Women were both the elite program in the conference until mismanagement and bad coaching decisions pushed them towards mediocrity. Now both have hired former players who were among the best in their time with program, but neither has Division 1 coaching experience. Purdue Men and IU Women are a good analogy for the present day as both are in up cycles. However, historically there is no comparison as PU Men have always been solid, while IU Women were the joke of the conference for most part until Moren got here. Quote

"Some Time" could mean a long time or a little time depending on how you define it and it is deliberately vague. It could be they don't know as it says later in tweet and she could be fine in a week or could be out all year. Sounds like uncertainty to me. Quote
Class of '66 Old Fart Posted January 16, 2022 Author Posted January 16, 2022 Doesn't pertain to today's game but saw this earlier and wonder if there could be issues with MSU players being forced to sit out on Wednesday Michigan State Head Coach Suzy Merchant unavailable for both today’s matchup versus Northwestern and Wednesday’s matchup at Indiana. Merchant is on COVID-19 health and safety protocol, per a release from the program. Assistant coach Dean Lockwood is stepping up. Quote
Class of '66 Old Fart Posted January 16, 2022 Author Posted January 16, 2022 Nicole also not available today in addition to Mackenzie being out. Reports are Nicole has entered the dreaded health and safety protocol. Cannot afford to get players in early foul trouble. Moore-McNeil will start in place of Cardano-Hillary. Browne starts in place of Holmes. Quote
Hoosierfan1901 Posted January 16, 2022 Posted January 16, 2022 Offense has been eh Purdue up 9-6 Quote
Hoosierfan1901 Posted January 16, 2022 Posted January 16, 2022 IU has a good crowd, lots of red in the stands, but Purdue brought a big one Quote
Class of '66 Old Fart Posted January 16, 2022 Author Posted January 16, 2022 After 1, Hoosiers trail 15-12. With 30 points missing from today's lineup, probably not that bad of opening quarter if we can just keep PUke within arm's length with our defense and hope we get some offensive production from Browne and Moore-McNeil.
