On a day of a major letdown in men's basketball we have a bit of good news in baseball.

Jon Blau  -  Michigan (7-2) lost today, so the Hoosiers (8-1) sit atop the Big Ten after a series-opening win over Purdue.

Hoosiers on the board quickly on a double by Toetz but couldn't do anything further leaving 2 on base.  1-0 IU lead after one inning.

Brown not as sharp today giving up a PUke run in the 2nd and a leadoff PUke single in the 3rd followed by a walk.  Tied at 1-1 PUke batting in the 3rd with 2 on and nobody out.

Brown seriously struggling and PUke leads 5-1 through the top of the 3rd.  He's allowed 5 hits and given up 3 walks.  An error by Cole Barr led to 1 PUke run and a passed ball another run.  He finished out the inning but the bullpen is warming up.

Drew Ashley's streak of consecutive games on base reached 35 with a first inning walk.

Surprised me, but Brown remained on the mound in the 4th and set the PUkesters down in order.  In the bottom of the 4th we get a run back on a 2-out single by Grant Macciocchi.   After 4 innings, we trail 5-2.

Brown takes the mound again in the 5th and sets them down 1-2-3.  Horrific 3rd inning but he seems to have re-grouped and now we need our offense kick to kick in.  For his 5 innings Brown has thrown 95 pitches, given up 5 runs (2 unearned), 5 hits, 3 BB and had 8 strikeouts.

Bottom of the 5th and Toetz gets a 1-out rbi single to make it a 5-3 game.   IU sends freshman Kip Fougerousse in to pinch hit for Jordan Fucci and in his first at bat of his career he doubles to right center scoring Toetz and it's now 5-4 after 5 complete innings.

Brown's day is over and John Modugno takes the mound to open the 6th and he gives up 3 hits and another PUke run to make it a 6-4 game before getting the third out with the bases loaded.  In our half of the 6th, we put runners on base with 2-outs but can't bring them home.

Braden Scott on the mound to start the 7th.  He gives up a hit but no further damage done.  Time is running out for our Hoosiers.

We go down in order in the 7th and still trail 6-4.

A walk followed by an error by Scott puts 2 runners on then a fielders choice puts runners on 1st and 3rd with 1 out.  A PUke double makes it 7-4 with 1- out and runners on 2nd and 3rd but we escape with no more runs scoring.

Welp.  We go down in order in the 8th trailing 7-4.  We've not been sharp at all.  Pitching has given up 10 hits, 5 walks.  We've committed 2 errors and left 8 runners on base.  Connor Manous in to pitch the 9th. 

Simply not our day.  PUke makes it 8-4 as we go to the bottom of the 9th.
