No. 13 Indiana Hosts No. 8 Michigan this Weekend

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 13-ranked Indiana University water polo team will host the No. 8 Michigan Wolverines this weekend at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington, Ind.

The two teams will play one game each day on Saturday, Mar. 13 and Sunday, Mar. 14. Both contests are slated for 11:00 a.m. ET starts. Live stats for the games can be found at IUHoosiers.com. Both games will also be streamed live on BTN Network+.

All-Time Series
Michigan leads the overall series with the Hoosiers, 51-21-2.

Last Time Out
On Feb. 27, the Hoosiers dominated a doubleheader with Salem, winning the two contests by scores of 22-8 and 19-3. Indiana's 22 goals in the first game are tied for the third-most in program history, just one behind the mark of 23 set in 2019 and 2007.

The Hoosiers improved to 10-0 in the overall series with Salem, including a 5-0 mark this season. In the three wins this year, IU out-scored Salem, 90-26. IU is a perfect 8-0 at home at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center this year, out-scoring their opponents a combined, 108-31.

School Record Efforts
In the doubleheader sweep of Salem on Feb. 27, both sophomore Zoe Crouch and junior Tina Doherty tied the Indiana school record with seven goals in one game.

Crouch dominated in the first game for the Hoosiers, matching the school record with seven goals. She also tied her career-high with two steals. In the second game, Doherty matched the school record herself, netting seven goals in the victory, while grabbing a pair of steals.

Indiana Ranked No. 13 in the Nation
Indiana remained ranked No. 13 in the nation in the latest Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Varsity Top 25 released on Wednesday.

Season start for your #11 Hoosiers!

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – No. 11 Indiana Water Polo will open the 2022 season at the UCSB Winter Invite with four games from Jan. 21-23.

Trio Named Team Captains
Indiana head coach Taylor Dodson announced the team's captains for the 2022 season in senior center Izzy Mandema, junior utility Zoe Crouch, and junior attacker Lanna Debow. The trio were all 2021 MPSF All-Academic and Academic All-Big Ten award winners and return as three of IU's statistical leaders from a season ago as they bring back a combined 134 goals, 69 assists and 23 field blocks.
 
Recapping 2021
Indiana will begin the season ranked No. 11 in the CWPA poll and are coming off a 10-17 overall finish and 2-13 mark in MPSF play in 2021. They return their five leading scorers from last season behind 84 points by Crouch in her sophomore campaign. Mandema, senior attacker Doherty, and senior goalkeeper Mary Askew highlight returners earned ACWPC All-American honors a season ago.
 
The 2022 Schedule
Indiana will play nearly all of its games away from home in 2022, playing just two weekends at Councilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in March. They will spend the majority of the preseason on the west coast with tournaments also at Michigan and Harvard. The bulk of the MPSF season will begin in early March as Indiana only hosts California (March 21) and San Jose State (March 26).

I had no idea we were ranked #11.  I didn't even know there were rankings in water polo!

We’re usually top 20, and that’s why IU chose to join a different conference, for the competition. Michigan is usually strong as well. I don’t think some B1G schools even have teams, but not sure

Recapping 2022
Going into the 2023 season, Indiana is ranked No. 13 after a 15-15 year. Graduate goalkeeper Mary Askew and senior utility Zoe Crouch returns after being honorable mentions in the ACWPC All-America, Crouch lead the Hoosiers in points (83) and assists (53) in 2022. Sophomore center Skylar Kidd is back on the roster after an impressive freshman campaign, earning a MPSF newcomer team honor.
 
The 2023 Schedule
Indiana added more home games this season, including two different invites. The Hoosier Invite which takes place Jan. 28-29, and the Indiana Classic, taking place between Feb. 18-19. These two tournaments alone include eight home games, add on three more at the start of March and the Hoosiers will have 11 home games in 2023. MPSF play will also begin in March when the team hosts Stanford (March 4) at Councilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.

NOTES

  • The Hoosiers are coming off a 4-0 weekend at the Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State where they picked up a pair of Top 25 wins (San Diego State, Princeton). They picked up their first Top 10 win since 2020 in a victory over the then No. 8 Tigers, 10-9.
  • Indiana jumped up one spot in the CWPA Varsity Polls this week to No. 12 following its perfect weekend in San Diego. 
  • Graduate student Zoe Crouch led the way over the weekend as she combined for 19 total points on 12 goals and seven assists. The Moraga, Calif. native also had six steals and three field blocks as she recorded three hat tricks including a season-high five goals in the win over La Salle.
  • Sophomore goalie Jasmine Higgs continues to impress in the cage for IU this season. The Sydney, Australia native leads the MPSF in saves (186) and holds a 16-3 record in the net this season.
  • Junior Skylar Kidd continues to lead the Hoosiers' offense this season with a team-high 46 goals, tied for a team-high 28 assists and a team-high 19 drawn exclusions. Her 46 goals rank third in the MPSF.  
  • Junior Sophia Sollie follows Kidd closely in scoring with 42 goals while Crouch adds 39 through 21 games. Joining Kidd in a team-high assists with 28 is sophomore Louisa Downes. The attacker has also put in 25 goals in the net this season.
