BLOOMINGTON, Ind.—Indiana Water Polo looks forward to hosting its second tournament of the season with the Hoosier Invite on Saturday and Sunday. The tournament will be set up like the Indiana Classic that took place earlier this season but this time with the opponents being Cal Lutheran, Mercyhurst and McKendree. Each team will have a chance to play each other and the Hoosiers are looking to make it a third-straight undefeated weekend, which would improve their win streak to 10. All three Indiana games will be streamed on BTN Plus.

The first game will start at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday with IU taking on Mercyhurst and then two neutral site games between McKendree and Cal Lutheran at Noon and Mercyhurst and McKendree at 4 p.m. will follow. IU will close out Saturday's action against Cal Lutheran at 5:30 p.m.

There will only be two games on Sunday as the Hoosiers play McKendree at 9 a.m. Mercyhurst and Cal Lutheran will close out the Hoosier Invite at 10:30 a.m.

Hoosiers Aiming For Longest Win Streak Since 2017

It has been a good run for the Hoosiers, who are currently on a seven game win streak. They have swept their last two weekend events at the Indiana Classic and then this past weekend at the Cal Lutheran Invite.

Now, Indiana is looking to do something they have not done since the 2017 season and that is go on a double-digit win streak. The Hoosiers have a chance to do that this weekend with three winnable games at the Hoosier Invite. They will then go to USC and UCLA the following weekend for a chance to tie the 12-game win streak that was achieved in 2017, assuming they win all three games this weekend.

Abarta and Crouch Sweep Player and Newcomer Of Week Awards

With their performances at the Cal Lutheran Invite, senior Megan Abarta won the MPSF Player of the Week award and freshman Zoe Crouch won the MPSF Newcomer of the Week award. Abarta is the first player to win the Player award, while only sophomore Tina Doherty has won the Newcomer award for the Hoosiers.

Abarta helped the Hoosiers with 12 goals over four games during the Invite on just 16 shots. She turned all four of her shots into goals against Cal Lutheran on Saturday and she also led the team with six steals on the weekend, including three against Cal Lutheran, which tied a season high.

Crouch had the best weekend of her young career with eight goals over four games, including a career-high three goals against Cal State East Bay on Sunday during the Invite. She did all of this, while only taking 10 total shots over four games. She also managed to record at least one steal in all four games and two against Fresno Pacific for a total of five on the weekend. Crouch's and Abarta's defense helped the Hoosiers hold three of their four opponents to single digit goals on the weekend.

Several Hoosiers Ranking In MPSF

As the season progresses, several Hoosiers are in the top 10 in different statistical categories, individually, in the MPSF. Doherty leads the Hoosiers with 38 goals on the season, which marks fourth in the MPSF and Abarta and sophomore Izzy Mandema each have 33 goals, which is tied for sixth in the conference. Doherty and Abarta each have 43 total points, which is tied for seventh in the MPSF. In goal, sophomore Mary Askew is second in the conference with 106 saves.

Indiana’s Dodson Announces Signing Of Transfer Sophie Leggett

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.—Indiana Water Polo head coach Taylor Dodson has announced the signing of University of California transfer Sophie Leggett from Santa Barbara, Calif. to the roster for the beginning of the 2021 season. After receiving a medical redshirt from the NCAA in her only season with the Golden Bears, Leggett will have four years of eligibility remaining with the Hoosiers.

In her only season with the Golden Bears, Leggett was the leading scorer with 10 goals in five games before medically withdrawing. Leggett scored a career-high and team-high four goals in their 8-5 victory oven then-ranked No.11 UCSB back on Jan. 18, 2020 and scored multiple goals in her final three games with California.

Prior to starting her college career, Leggett played one season for head coach Ethan Damato at Laguna Beach before moving and finishing her career playing for head coach Connor Levoff at Dos Pueblos. Leggett only played two seasons at Dos Pueblos due to an injury her junior season but finished All-Channel League First-Team as a sophomore and was the Channel League MVP her senior season. Leggett was also named a three-time All-CIF Southern Section selection.

In addition, Leggett played for the club teams SET and 805 and while a member of SET, Leggett was teammates with current Hoosier Tina Doherty. Leggett also competed as a member of the 2016 USA Cadet National Team and in the 2016 UANA Junior Pan American Championships.

Dodson also has a summer of experience coaching Leggett in club play during the summer before her freshman season and is excited to be reunited this winter.

"We are thrilled to add Sophie to our Hoosier family," Dodson commented. "Sophie will immediately have an impact on our program in and out of the pool. A competitor through and through, she is a dynamic player. Sophie is a huge offensive talent but with a defensive mind. Throughout this process she and I talked a lot about finding a home and team that felt like family. Her contribution to our culture of togetherness is a perfect fit."

During club play, Leggett earned Junior Olympic All-America status in the seventh and eighth grades and again as a 14U, 16U and 18U.

Leggett has dual-citizenship between the United States and Canada and will begin training with the Canadian Senior National Women's Water Polo team for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

In her personal life, Leggett comes from a family of athletes with her mom, Jennifer, playing tennis at the University of Guelph in Canada and her dad, Keith, being an All-American water polo player at USC. Keith also played for the Canadian National team from 1988-1992. Her brother, Tom, is currently a junior at Oaks Christian High School in California and also plays water polo.

Leggett intends to major in business and cannot wait to join the program.

"I'm beyond excited to join the Hoosiers, a team of incredibly powerful women and I can't wait to provide all that I can to the team. Indiana is such an amazing institution and I'm so happy to have found my new home. Go Hoosiers!"

IU is a decent team but just realize only a few dozens teams field Water Polo at all and almost all of those east of Mississippi River are mid-majors. Its huge out west where many top schools field the sport, but in Eastern half of country IU and Michigan are only big time schools with a team.

Not diminishing the accomplishment, but just be aware the team is often ranked and being no. 13 is not the same in water polo as in other NCAA sports due to very few teams.
