After 3 complete, Hoosiers lead winless Miami (OH) 4-2.

A sac fly in the 2nd from Andrew Wiggins accounted for our first run.  In our 3rd, we put our first 2 batters on base and then Josh Pyne flexed his bat for a 3-run HR.

Freshman Seth Benes got the start on the mound and gave up a solo HR in the 1st.  He struck out 2.  Cooper Katskee pitched the 2nd and opened the 3rd giving up a solo HR.  Grant Holderfield came on and pitched the 3rd and gave up a double but no runs.  This was Holderfield's first appearance since 2022 as he sat out all of last year with an injury.

8-4 Hoosier lead at the end of 6.

Jack Moffitt pitched a 1-2-3 4th inning throwing just 5 pitches and stayed on the mound for the 5th where he hit a batter, gave up 2 hits and allowed 2 runs aided by an IU error from Pyne that tied the score at 4-4 after 4 and a half.  Evan Whitetaker took over to open the 6th; put 2 runners on but nobody scored.

Consecutive walks with 2 outs in our 4th but we couldn't bring them in.  Leadoff walk to Pyne in our 5th advanced to 3rd on a single and scored on a Tibbits sac fly to make it 5-4 IU.  Cerny base hit and a stolen base and we had runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out who scored on Joey Brenczewski's double to make it 7-4.  In the 6th a Taylor RBI single made it 8-4.

12-6 final score.

Brandon Keyster took the mound in the 7th and went 1.1 innings giving up 2 runs and was replaced by Drew Buhr and later Jacob Vogel who got the final out in the 9th.  8 Hoosier pitchers allowed 9 hits, 1BB, 2 HBP and struckout 12.

We picked up 4 more runs in the 8th.  Hoosiers with 13 hits on the day.  Cerny goes 4-5; Taylor 3-4 and Mathison and Pyne 2 hits apiece.  Pyne 4 RBI and Tibbits, Cerny & Brenczewski each had 2.

This weekend we'll be in Waco, TX for a 3-game series with Baylor.  All 3 games will be televised on ESPN+.

Jeff Mercer says that AJ Shepard will be OUT for significant time. Shepard—who got injured in Sunday’s game in the collision with an opposing runner—was wearing cast on his non-throwing arm today.

He added in his postgame presser it will likely be 4-8 weeks.

Tuesday at 4:00, we're scheduled to host Purdue Fort Wayne with the game televised on BTN+.  Per release, Indiana freshman right-hander Seth Benes will be on the mound.  Mother Nature may be a factor.  Currently, there's a dry window from 4:00 to 7:00 but scattered thunderstorms for several hours on both sides of that window.  With luck, they'll get the game completed just in time to catch the IUWBB game at 7:00.

Just looked it up -- Andy and Alan Benes, both former MLB pitchers from Evansville -- are his uncles. Benes is a baseball name; sorta thought there might be a relation, but wasn't sure.

Seth's dad, Adam, also was pitcher -- but never quite made the majors.

So far team appears to not be taking the game seriously enough. Down 3-0 after 3.5 innings and lucky it is not much worse. Wind is blowing straight out and IU totally befuddled by this PFW pitcher. I admittedly know nothing about the guy they are facing but the fact that he is a midweek starter for a struggling team means Hoosiers should not have this much trouble. Every other team Mastodons have faced have had zero trouble hitting them with far lesser lineups.

Admittedly weekday pitching is hit or miss but PFW doing fine hitting Indiana guys. Not overly concerned about this piece though. The fact though that the Hoosiers' potent lineup can't touch this guy to me speaks to a lack of focus.

Have six innings for the offense to do what it is capable of and should be doing or suffer easily worst loss in several seasons. Team has been so dialed in to start season but today just not with it. Hopefully they wake up soon and survive.

IU getting themselves in a rundown between first and second was ultimate example. Problem is runner at first survived the rundown but the runner at second forgot to take off so two players were on one bag. Definitely a focus issue today IU has only a few innings to correct.

Right now this is painful to watch for an IU team that has done everything perfectly so far early on in 2024.
