Hoosiers lose their season opener 9-4.  Tony Neubeck opened and pitched 4 innings of 1-hit ball.  Wheels fell off after he was replaced by Reagan Rivera who gave up 7 hits and 9 runs in 1.1 innings and at the end of the 6th we trailed 9-2.  We picked up 2 in the 9th but too little too late.  We managed just 5 hits; Ayden Crouse had 2.  Jake Hanley had both of our RBIs.  Doubleheader tomorrow.

I watched some of the game and the pitching was actually quite good for the most part. Neubeck's performance was encouraging as lead pitcher and that's the toughest opponent he will see all yr.

Rivera was bad in the 5th inning, but the big six run sixth inning happened partly because of shoddy defense that started with an error at SS and a lost ball in the sun that landed on a popup to LF. If neither of those happen its a clean inning. Either way though to much wildness at least today to be relied on in high leverage spots if his hit batters and wild pitches continue.

NC is by far the best team IU will see all year and a national championship contender. Outside of the keystone cops defense in the 6th inning, pretty much went toe to toe with them.

After today, I hereby decree our games will go no longer than 4 innings.  Tied at 1-1 through 4.  UNC scores 3 in its 5th and 6 more in the 6th.  Final score 12-2 in a run-shortened game.  Jackson Bergman pitched the first 4 and was charged with 3 runs.  3 relievers combined to give up another 9 runs over the remaining 3 inning.  Kinda sounds like last year?  For our part, we managed just 4 hits.  Final game of the weekend projected to start around 3:45 and hopefully we can salvage at least 1 for the first series of the new season.

Hoosiers will return to Bloomington winless after dropping a 4-3 11-inning game to the Tarheels.  We had a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the 9th and then this happened.  We had just 5 hits in the game all singles.  4 IU pitchers gave up 8 hits and 8 BB.  Tuesday night we host Bradley at 4:00 and next weekend we're in Jacksonville, FL for 3-games in the Live Like Lou Jacksonville Classic where we'll play LSU, UCF and Notre Dame.

In a vacuum, getting swept by the best team you will play all year that could well be dogpiling in Omaha with a national title is not a big deal.

However, expanding beyond the vacuum is where we have issues. The pitching actually was fairly encouraging and I like a lot of the guys who threw and if you can stretch out the first two weekend guys, you could well be on to something.

The problem is though the continued keystone cops defense and zero attention to detail the last few years. The recruiting is good and in many ways the players are developing. However, the chemistry feels very off and the little things and fundamentals are not there.

That last throw was either showboating, nervousness, or more sinister intentional. None of those explanations speak well to a strong program culture.

Right now interest in the program is at its lowest point since before Tracy Smith got here. Some of that is our front running fans I complain about. However, the product is a bit mediocre.

I think Mercer has done a lot well and gets some undue criticism. He deserves the year to try to make this work (especially since Glant is not with program anymore), but that type of play is one that can wreck a season. If things go poorly and the undiscipline continues, its probably best both parties go their separate way.

I hate it for Mercer since he has done so much well. However, at some point its up to him to build a culture and right now that doesn't necessarily appear to be there.

What happened? Did he just straight up Steve Sax the throw?

Hoosiers get their first win of the season a 15-3 run-shortened pounding over Bradley.  It was 4-2 going into the bottom of the 4th and we exploded for 8 runs added 1 more in the 5th and 2 more in the 6th.  14 total hits; 4 of them HR; 2 by Hogan Denny.  Denny with 4 RBIs on the night and Hanley with 3.  6 Hoosiers had multi-hit games.  As is usual for the mid-week game we used 6 different pitchers who collectively gave up 7 hits and 4 BB.

Hoosiers bounce back and take a 6-1 win over UCF.  Thomas started and pitched 5 innings of 1-hit ball with 4 BB.  Rivera pitched the final 4 innings allowing just 2 hits and walking 1.  We had 9 hits.  Denny with 3; Crouse and Malamazian each with 2.  Malazmazian 3 RBIs.

11:00 am Sunday morning we take on Notre Dame who lost to LSU today 9-4.

My son played against Thomas for years. Glad to see him having success at Indiana.  Could really be special if things come together. Tons of potential.

It took 11 innings but ND gets a 9-8 win.  6 Hoosier pitchers allowed 13 hits and walked 4.  We had 15 hits; Ricketts and Fry each with 3.  Malamazian had 3 RBI.  We're now 2-5 on the season.  Tuesday evening we'll be in Cincinnati to play Xavier.  Next weekend a 4-game series in Bowling Green, KY against Western Kentucky.
