Just for fun stuff.  Today is John Ritter's birthday and for those that have never heard the story, John Ritter singlehandedly defeated Notre Dame on December 18, 1971 in Assembly Hall's dedication game.  Final score was 94-29; John Ritter scored 31 pts.  This was Digger Phelps' first season at ND and for the game ND had more turnovers than it did points.

For the season IU went 17-8 (9-5 in third place in B1G) and lost to Princeton 68-60 in the first round of the NIT (NCAA was a 32-team event).  On that team:  Joby Wright and Rick Ford were seniors.  Ritter, Steve Downing, Jerry Memering, Kim Pemberton, Bootsie White and Frank Wilson were juniors.  Steve Heiniger and Dave Shepherd were sophomores.   This was an era where freshmen couldn't play but 2 of the freshmen on the team that year were Steve Green and John Laskowski building blocks for what was to come.

I remember that game. In the pre three point shot and shot clock years, Coach Knight would put the ball in the deep freeze if he had a lead, any lead, in the last five minutes of the game. The change of culture when Knight arrived was similar to what is happening this year. I remember the fans cheering one time late in a game when the combined score totaled 100. After years of the Hurryin Hoosiers, Coach Knight's style was brutal to watch. After a while, we got used to it!

I got a desk calendar with IU trivia last month.  The first player to win both an NCAA and NBA championship played for IU, Herm Schaefer.

And the first player to win a high school state championship, NCAA championship, NBA championship, and Olympic gold medal was??

(Should be an easy one for my Hoosier faithful)

coonhounds for the win!

Alford went two for four; never got past the quarterfinals in high school, and had a few years with a decent Mavericks team, but never got very close to an NBA ring.

Quinn was the third guard on the 1984 Celtics championship team led by Bird, Cornbread, DJ, and ML Carr.

Buckner is one of 3 players to do so, the others are Jerry Lucas and Magic!
