Class of '66 Old Fart Posted December 12, 2018 Posted December 12, 2018 In a game that was far from interesting to watch, Marian defeated Culver Military 39-38. CMA led at the half 29-18, and Marian never led until scoring the winning basket with 10 secs. left in the game. Galloway the leading scorer for CMA with 12 pts. Jaden Ivey of Marian scored 21 pts., which the announcers said was his average. These teams will likely face each other again in February as they are in the same sectional. Class of '66 Old Fart Posted January 27, 2019 Posted January 27, 2019 Friday night CMA pounded West Lafayette 60-23. One would have thought that West Lafayette's biggest concern Friday was Trey Galloway, Culver's 6-foot-5 junior guard. The Purdue target came into the game averaging 16.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game. Galloway finished with nine points, seven rebounds and four assists for Culver. (Lafayette Journal-Courier) CMA faces Armaan Franklin and Indpls. Cathedral tonight. HoosierAloha 1 Quote

Class of '66 Old Fart Posted February 16, 2019 Posted February 16, 2019 CMA gave La Lumiere all it could handle but in OT, LaLu defeated CMA 46 - 45 as Keion Brooks made 1 of 2 FT with .8 sec. remaining in OT for the LaLu win. Galloway had a chance to win it for CMA in regulation with 2 FT's with 4.1 sec. remaining but he missed both. His 5th foul put Brooks on the line for the game winning FT. Not a good shooting night for Galloway. I had him with 12 pts. on just 2-15 FG; 1-9 on 3's; 7-13 FT; 9 reb; 5 assts; 3 TO. During the game the announcers commented he's only hitting 57% of his FT's this season. HoosierAloha 1 Quote

Class of '66 Old Fart Posted February 25, 2019 Posted February 25, 2019 Indpls. Star Class 3A Defending state champion: Culver Academy (18-3) No. 1 team: Delta (23-0) Worth noting: Delta is the state’s only undefeated team. The Eagles, who last won a sectional in 2011, are coached by Mark Detwiler, who came to the Delaware County school in 2017 after 16 seasons at Union County. Delta, which has wins over Connersville, Hamilton Heights, Muncie Central, New Palestine, Mt. Vernon and New Castle, is led by senior Josh Bryan (24.0 ppg, 5.5 rebounds, 2.4 steals), along with sophomore Brady Hunt (11.8 ppg, 7.3 rebounds) and senior Tyler Wilburn (11.4 ppg, 4.3 rebounds). Delta is part of Sectional 24 at New Castle (more below). Worth noting II: Defending champion Culver Academy is loaded and might be the favorite to win another state title. The Eagles are led by junior Trey Galloway (16.3 ppg, 6.3 rebounds, 3.8 assists), senior Ethan Brittain-Watts (15.2 ppg, 2.8 assists) and junior Deonte Craig (12.9 ppg, 7.7 rebounds). But Sectional 19 at Jimtown is not an easy road. Sixth-ranked Mishawaka Marian (18-3), which is on the other side of the bracket, handed Culver Academy one of its three losses back in December. Marian is led by junior Jaden Ivey(25.6 ppg). Points, points, points: Class 3A is filled with several of the state’s top scorers. In addition to Blackford’s Luke Brown (35.9 ppg) and New Castle’s Luke Bumbalough (31.6 ppg), Marion sophomore Jalen Blackmon (29.9 ppg) leads Marion as the favorite in Sectional 23 at Bellmont. The Giants played for a regional championship last season, losing to New Castle. HoosierAloha 1 Quote
Class of '66 Old Fart Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 Draining jump shots wasn’t the only thing Trey Galloway proved to be good at Wednesday night. The talented 6-foot-5 junior guard also showed he could take the ball to the basket as well by scoring eight of his game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter, helping No. 3 and defending state champion Culver Academy pull away for a 48-35 win over host Jimtown in opening round action of the Class 3A Jimtown boys' basketball sectional. Next up for the Eagles (19-3) is a Friday semifinal date around 7:30 p.m. with South Bend Washington (14-10), a 52-38 winner over New Prairie in Wednesday’s other contest. John Glenn (10-12) takes on No. 5 Marian (19-3) in the 6 p.m. opener. HoosierAloha 1 Quote

Class of '66 Old Fart Posted March 3, 2019 Posted March 3, 2019 Game story for Saturday's sectional championship game. It’s not just how well a team shoots, it’s how they take care of the ball. Culver Academies is superb in moving the ball and getting in to the places it needs to be. The Eagles were especially superb Saturday in a 52-41 victory over Marian for the Class 3A boys basketball sectional championship at Jimtown. Senior guard Ethan Brittain-Watts scored 20 points and junior Trey Galloway chipped in 16 for the No. 3-ranked Eagles (21-3), who advance to next week’s regional at South Bend Washington. No. 5 Marian, meanwhile, closes a 20-4 campaign. Jaden Ivey had 19 to lead the Knights. Marian had defeated Culver Academies by one point back on Dec. 11, and Brittain-Watts said the memory of that contest was a big motivator for Saturday’s victory. “Right after that game in December, we didn’t think much about it,” said Brittain-Watts, a member of last year’s 3A state championship squad. “But it was always in the back of our mind, especially this week.” Marian’s only lead was 4-2, a couple minutes into the first quarter. Culver Academies pulled ahead with a 7-0 run keyed by Brittain-Watts, and the Knights were never able to catch up. It was 14-12 early in the second period, but another Culver Academies explosion — this one 9-0 — helped the Eagles take a comfortable 25-15 lead at halftime. At times, Culver Academies’ offense resembles that of a good small college, with crisp passing and perfect placement to open shooters. The Eagles had only 10 turnovers against Marian’s smothering defense. “In low possession games, we emphasize to the kids that we have to take care of the ball,” said Culver Academies coach Mark Galloway. “Our offense depends on that ball movement.” Marian tried several defenses throughout the contest, with a tight press having some success late in the third quarter and early in the fourth. A three-point play by Ivey cut the margin to six, 37-31, with 6:23 remaining. But as quickly as that occurred, Brittain-Watts sank a pair of free throws and followed with a three-point basket and another pair of free throws. The Culver Academies lead went right back to 44-31. “We’re a different team than we were in December,” added Galloway. “We had some injured kids, then, but mostly we have become a more complete group. Everybody does their part.” Marian’s Coley Quinn tried to be a force inside, grabbing six rebounds and scoring six points. But most of the time he was double-teamed, moving to the basket. While the Knights played a solid defense, the Eagle defense was equally good, and suffocated Marian’s inside game. The Knights, normally a good-shooting team, hit only 35 percent of their shots in the first half. “Their defense kept us from doing a lot of things we wanted to do,” said Marian coach Robb Berger. “Those were two great teams out there, and they (Culver Academies) just made a few more plays.” Nothing illustrated the Eagles’ ability to handle the ball better than a four-corner offense which milked minutes off the clock in the second half. “That’s just our offense,” said Brittain-Watts. “We’re confident in the things we want to do.” MARIAN (41): Jaden Ivey 6-16 5-7 19, Jake Bishop 1-1 0-0 2, Coley Quinn 2-4 2-2 6, Jerry Bracey 3-9 2-5 8, Kyron King 1-2 0-0 2, Kaleo Kakalia 2-3 0-0 4, Michael Baughman 0-0 0-0 0, Maddix Bogunia-Bright 0-0 0-0 0. Class of '66 Old Fart Posted March 9, 2019 Posted March 9, 2019 Culver Military advances to face the winner of Hammond vs. West Lafayette with a 55 - 37 win over Hanover Central. Unofficially, I have Galloway with 11 pts. on 4-11 FG; 0-4 on 3's; 3-4 FT's; 5 reb; 6 assists; 2 stls; 1 TO. It will be interesting to follow Galloway's scoring next season as CMA will graduate Ethan Brittain-Watts who shares the primary scoring load with Galloway. Really like the overall team defense played by CMA. They go straight man-to-man and do an excellent job of handling switches and taking away baseline drives. HoosierAloha and johnsoniu 2 Quote
