Agree. Not saying we shouldn't have gone further than we did, but people have come to romanticize how good that team actually was. As you said, IU was a handful of really good teams that year, but we weren't head and shoulders better than everyone else.

Remember, we barely beat Georgetown early in the year, and struggled to beat Georgia, along with losing to Butler in the non conference. Yes, we were certainly capable of winning a national title that year, and certainly fell apart down the stretch and should have gone further. But, IU was also a talented team with almost no depth, and and no size in the backcourt.

A really good team capable of winning it all, but also a team with flaws that could be taken advantage of.

Yeah this happens every year with teams that have a chance to win it. Since that was iu's first team in a really long time that legitimately had a chance to win it all it stung the fan base harder. But in reality that loss was no different then any other number 1 seed losing before the final 4.

We might as well stop because I'm not changing my stance. IU was the best team when they wanted to look like it. Obviously, they didn't want to be when it mattered most

I'm sure they didn't want to win. Because that makes a whole truckload of sense.

Let me put it like this. They sure didn't look like they cared that much against Syracuse. Nor against Temple but they survived that one. That was the most talented team Crean was ever gonna have at IU

Crean had almost a full week to prepare for a 2-3 zone.

Imagine having having the privilege of knowing what defense your opponent will run and not being able prepared for it..

U mean like every team that has lost to Syracuse in the last 15 years since he has ran it for that long. They won a national title playing that 2-3 zone that teams had a full week to prepare for. While iu looked terrible against it don't act like it's a normal 2-3 zone with the length and height of the guards he recruits for his system. There was a reason their defense was the 7th adjusted defense that year. Just think how Marquette fans felt when they only scored 39 points in the elite 8 against the 2-3 zone

They looked more like a team that had done nothing but run suicides the day before the game. Which, given what we've heard about Crean, wouldn't be all that surprising.

Yes there was that too. It was definitely on both Crean and the players. A total team collapse

Just because you're mad they lost that game doesn't mean they didn't care. They had been slumping for a month+ and playing bad basketball overall. The whole "who wants it more" thing is crap. It comes down to who is playing better basketball. Pretty sure Bob Knight said something along those lines in his Power of Negativity book.

It's one thing to lose. Crean didn't have his team ready to do the little things you HAVE to do to win.

Its like he didn't know how to do it

I just watched the temple game again. Temple had a great game plan and Wyatt was ridiculous. Iu looked like they cared but for whatever reason they were getting outplayed. Vic looked like he cared when he drained that 3. Talented teams lose all the time. Sometimes you are on the wrong end of games when u are th favorites. Wonder how Duke fans felt in 2002 when their team of 6 first rounders lost in the sweet 16 to IU

The "who wants it more thing" is not crap. Games are not just about talent but about passion, motivation and dedication as well

The difference is for coach K he wins more big games than he loses. Crean has won how many truly epic postseason games?  1 or 2?

They were outplayed because Temple had a game plan while IU did not. Something that would become far too obvious over the next four years

Syracuse was a top 10 preseason team that year as well that under preformed all year to get a 4 seed. People seem to forget that and think that Syracuse was trash that year

My thing with the Syracuse loss is 1: everyone in the world knows what Syracuse does with that zone, yes they were athletic and long, but it's not like that should have been a surprise. Especially since Crean played them every year at Marquette. They don't really change their system he should have been more than ready for it.
2: he had an ideal team to beat the zone. 2-4 good to great 3 pt shooters on the floor at all times and Zeller in the middle to crash the zone. Vic to slash and kick. I know that cuse team was good but IMO there was no excuse for losing to them. Completely outcoached and unprepared (as per usual)

Exactly. Duke had won 3 national championships under K before that loss to IU. Big difference

Or they just played harder. Did Syracuse not have a game plan when that temple team beat them earlier in the year. Losing happens regardless of having a terrible coach or a hall of fame coach. Sometimes it's just not your night

It was just an example. I wonder how Georgetown fans felt that year when their 2 seeded Hoyas with a top 5 pick lost to Florida gulf coast in the 1st round
