The lack of shooting is a killer. It's a grind for us to score so we're screwed if we don't bring our A+ defense against teams like Kansas and Arizona. Definitely agree regarding the Big 10. We were expecting a down conference but that doesn't look to be the case. -

Mildly. I think we're probably in the 25-35 range. But I think a lot of people bought into the preseason hype so we look worse than we really are. -

I'm concerned about the team playing in an environment like this. We really need a good start. -

@Hovadipo is that you in one of the red suit jackets? -
I didn’t like it even when we were winning, but it’s easier to look past things like that when you’re winning. Uncomposed is a good way to describe him.

IUFB is in a tough spot with NIL. They’re a historically bad football team at a historically good basketball school. Alums/sponsors who care about IU athletics will just give the money to iubb players. For the price it would cost to field a competitive football team, we could buy an insane bball team.
-
I just really completely disagree. I guess it’s just personal preference. Tom Allen is the face of IUFB. He’s the CEO. His behavior is completely relevant. The way he behaves is, to me, embarrassing. I don’t want the face of the program to be someone completely unhinged. And the team mirrors his personality, unfortunately, in many ways. I’m not the biggest Mike Woodson fan, but one thing I love about him is how calm and collected he is in the public eye. It’s the polar opposite of Mike Woodson.

People mock the way Allen chants it all the time. Similar to how people mock Russell Wilson’s “let’s ride.” You can #LEO without constantly saying it. How many other P5 coaches constantly chant a catch phrase? It’s all part of the image Coach Allen portrays, which is that of an erratic, spastic, goof. On the sideline he acts like a 10 year old who just downed several cases of Mountain Dew Plus, part of LEOing is holding the people you love accountable. Allen consistently fails to do that.

I’m not casting him as a player who can only play well against cupcakes. We saw him have good games against good teams last season. But that was a year ago. I’m talking about this season. Sometimes guys regress year over year (Phinisee, for example). Has Geronimo regressed? Is he just in a rut? I don’t know. Whatever the reason, he’s struggled this year. Yes, it’s hard to produce without minutes, but if you aren’t producing in the minutes you do get it’s hard for the coach to justify giving you even more. Woodson doesn’t always get it right. But it’s not like he isn’t playing JG at all. He’s in the rotation. He’s playing the same amount as he did last year. It’d be one thing if JG came in, lit it up during the stretch, and then sat on the bench the rest of the game. Woodson is playing a shorter rotation than he did last year, which I like. I agree with you that 5 minutes is hard to make an impact in. But, for example, against Rutgers he played 12 minutes. He shot 0-5 from the field and had 0 rebounds, steals, or blocks. You can’t really afford to keep a guy out there when that’s what he’s giving you.
-
Why do you get so bent out of shape over people’s Geronimo comments, lol. It’s not personal, it’s just basketball. From the first paragraph of my initial post to you: “He hasn’t had a single good game against a legitimate team this year.” Yeah, he had some good games against good teams last year. Never said he didn’t. But it’s a new season, we have more frontcourt depth, and he hasn’t shown anything this season to show that he deserves more minutes. It’s not just the lack of scoring. Scoring isn’t really his strength. It’s the lack of other statistics too. Yeah, we get beat up by teams like Rutgers. In 12 minutes against Rutgers he grabbed 0 rebounds. You can’t have a frontcourt player grabbing 0 rebounds. Same thing against Nebraska. Only 1 rebound against Arizona. He’s not scoring, he’s not rebounding. You brought up his two 5 block games. Do you know how many blocks he’s had against Xavier, UNC, Rutgers, Nebraska, and Arizona? 0. Why does he deserve more minutes? When you’re the 9th guy in the rotation you better make the most out of your minutes. He hasn’t been, so he doesn’t play more. You can disagree with me regarding how much emphasis to put on his cupcake performances, but it’s clear that Woodson agrees. Woodson saw his performances in those games, from a much closer viewpoint than either of us, and he doesn’t think the performances warrant more playing time.

Oh the irony. There’s nothing cherry picked about my stats. If you want to wax poetic about how amazing Geronimo was against 3-7 Little Rock, knock yourself out. You can go on and on about how great IUFB did against Idaho too while you’re at it. I do not care about how he does against crappy teams. We don’t play in a conference with schools of that caliber. We play in the Big 10. I care about how he does against Big 10 caliber schools because, guess what, that’s who we play the rest of the season. We only have two cupcakes left. Against non-cupcake teams JG hasn’t done jack this season. That’s just reality.
-
I couldn’t care less about his play against schools like Jackson State or Little Rock. He hasn’t had a single good game against a legitimate team this year. I posted this before, but I’ll post it again. Inthe 5 games we’ve played against legitimate teams, here are his stats: Xavier: 1 point, 1 rebound, 0 blocks, 0 steals, 0 assists in 5 minutes. UNC: 2 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals, 0 blocks, 0 assist, 4 fouls (in 11 minutes). Rutgers: 2 points, 0 rebounds, 0 blocks, 0 steals, 0 assists in 11 minutes. Nebraska: 1 point, 0 rebounds, 0 blocks, 0 steals, 0 assists in 9 minutes. Arizona: 2 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal, 0 blocks, 0 assists in 8 minutes. 8 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals, 0 blocks, and 0 steals across 5 games. Not every athletic 6’6 kid with potential develops into a player. At some point ‘potential’ has to translate into performance. Right now, he’s an end of the rotation guy on a good P5 team.
-
Bates gets more leeway because he plays a position we have a big hole at. The 2/3 is our weakest position by far. If you yank him, who are you going to put in? JG is competing with TJD, Race, and Malik in the frontcourt. No point in having him play through errors when you can yank him and put in someone better.

Purdue was supposed to be down this year and now they’re ranked #1 lol. Wtf.
-
People often use the phrase “he/she is going to press charges,” but it isn’t up to the victim. The victim may go to the police, but the victim isn’t the one ‘pressing charges.’ That’s the DA. The fiancée can’t drop the charges, that’s up to the prosecutor. If she doesn’t cooperate it makes their case harder but they may have photographs or other physical evidence.

Last year he averaged 4.4 points/3.6 rebounds/0.7 blocks/0.3 steals/0.3 assists in 12.6 mpg. This year he’s averaged 5.1 points/2.2 rebounds/1.1 blocks/1.0 steals/0.1 assists in 13.0 mpg. His stats this year only look decent because of the cupcakes. In the 5 games we’ve played against legitimate teams, here are his stats: Xavier: 1 point, 1 rebound, 0 blocks, 0 steals, 0 assists in 5 minutes. UNC: 2 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals, 0 blocks, 0 assist, 4 fouls (in 11 minutes). Rutgers: 2 points, 0 rebounds, 0 blocks, 0 steals, 0 assists in 11 minutes. Nebraska: 1 point, 0 rebounds, 0 blocks, 0 steals, 0 assists in 9 minutes. Arizona: 2 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal, 0 blocks, 0 assists in 8 minutes. Geronimo has not been nearly good enough for you to constantly clamor for him the way that you do. 8 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals, 0 blocks, and 0 steals across 5 games. He hasn’t done anything this year to earn Woodson’s trust.

We don’t “get” anything out of it. I just view it as the reality of the situation. It was great while it was happening. But looking back it’s hard not to view the 2020 season with a giant asterisk when we were as terrible as we were immediately afterwards, especially when we didn’t have huge losses from the season before. We brought a ton of people back.
-
And even those who take the view that it shouldn’t be downplayed, you still have to acknowledge that Tom Allen’s success in 2020 should have virtually zero to do with what the AD does moving forward. Dolson can’t sit there and think “well, 2020 was great. Maybe he can do it again. Let’s keep him.” It was a fluke. We’ve seen how he followed up on that season.
-
Can anyone honestly take the 2020 season seriously at this point? Zero fans in the stands. Players opting out of the season. Michigan, PSU, and MSU all being terrible. Players in and out of the lineup with covid. Games getting canceled - Wisconsin played 2 games over a 6 week period. Following it up by going 2-16 in conference over the next two seasons. I put zero stock into that season. It was a once in a lifetime fluke.
-
How much 2020 counts, imho, is up for debate. That season was such an oddity. I’ll give you 2019. But by my post I mean that Allen had success in a couple years where we had some good coordinators, those guys left, and Allen’s program has become a dumpster fire. So, sure, those years ‘count,’ but how much Allen had to do with the success is questionable to me given the results since.
-
11 of Allen’s 17 conference wins came in 2019 and 2020. In the other 4 seasons he’s 6-30. Just absolutely pitiful. Without good coordinators to prop him up, he’s a bad, bad coach. You can’t LEO your way out of this one. Too bad we have 2 more years of Allen freaking out on the sidelines like a maniac.
