Indiana Players Now In The Portal
Hoosierfan2017 replied to Chris007's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I don’t disagree with the bolded at all. Tamar Bates and Jordan Geronimo just aren’t the difference between us looking like a program that will win and us not. They’re mediocre at best role players. -
I had 27/32 first round games and now I have two teams left, both of whom I have losing in the next round.

Bates hit as many shots in the tournament as I did and Geronimo has been living off his “potential” for 3 years now. Through 82 games he’s a 3.8 ppg guy. At a certain point your ‘potential’ turns into ‘you are what you are.’ He’s been flirting with leaving for 3 years now. Let him leave and go find a portal guy with his athleticism who can actually hoop too. -

@Chris007 cmon man you just ruined HoosierHooper’s Friday night -
Isn’t Furst a plodding big man? That’s not the kind of player I want getting heavy minutes. TJD couldn’t shoot a lick, but he was pretty quick and agile for a big. Playing him and Race together was the problem. Why keep the same roster construction? I want a team of athletes. Look at the teams still left in the tournament. How many start a guy like Furst? Our current style isn’t a good fit for the college basketball landscape.

Hearing these stories of Duncomb’s exploits makes me miss the days when we had serious players whose 1 and only priority was basketball. Guys like Hanner Perea. -
I don’t think he has a Facebook (at least that I could find). This may be what your friend was referring to.

He wouldn’t be old enough for Nicks/Kilroys next year. Even if he’s playing in the G league, he getting millions guaranteed if he’s a first round pick. Your first two years are guaranteed. Years 3 and 4 are team options. Teams rarely don’t pick up a first rounder’s option. The last first round pick last year is making $2.193 million this year. Next year he’s at $2.3 million. Just under $4.5 million guaranteed. Someone saw a projection with him going 19th. Last year’s 19th pick is making $3 million this year and will make a little over $6.2 million in his first two years. If his options get picked up in year 3 and 4, he’ll make around $14.76 million over his first four years. He could come back and improve his draft stock. He could also come back and hurt it. He could get injured and never be the same again. It’s hard for a 19 year old old to turn down multi-millions to come back to college and be a student. Maybe he can make millions in NIL? Idk where we’re at with dollar amounts.

Additionally, Yogi was playing on a stacked team his freshman year, which makes a freshman’s job a lot easier. Having two top 5 picks + Hulls and Watford helped a lot. Cupps will have… well, who knows. If we’re relying heavily on Cupps we’re probably not going to be in good shape.

Coaching Changes Nationally

Maybe we’ll be able to poach him in a couple years after Woody retires. -
I'll Be The Optimist For Once
Hoosierfan2017 replied to Loaded Chicken Sandwich's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Eh, I mean even the creator of the ‘optimism thread’ wasn’t exactly optimistic. “Looking forward, we might be an NIT/low seeded NCAAT team next year but in a way will be refreshing to see new faces leading the program in the post-TJD era.” “But I think expectations should be that of "learning and growth" for next season.” “Lot to look forward to for both programs, even if it is 2 years down the road for the men's” Some people are inherently more optimistic than others. I look at next season and see a pretty significant down year. I view that as the most likely outcome. A whole lot has to go right during the offseason for that to change. We went 23-12 and to the round of 32 with arguably the best player in college basketball + a potential lottery pick pg. Who is stepping in to fill those holes? When you have a 65 year head coach, a rebuilding year doesn’t fill me with much optimism. -

It’s been insinuated in some of the other threads that he’s the bench player looking for money for both him and his family. Can’t fault a guy for wanting to get paid, but he didn’t do much to help himself out this year. -

I’m sure it’s happened before, but his mind seems to be on thing$ other than basketball. Not sure how many teams are looking to throw big money at Mr. 0-13. He has about one good game for every 10 bad ones. He played well against PSU in the BTT. In the 15 other games he played in since January 22nd, he went 10-55 from the field (18.1%). I’m fine with him moving on. -

Are you the IU Scott guy? It’s fun to poke fun at Purdue and all, but Matt Painter is a very good coach who, year in and year our, gets very good results despite coaching at an inferior school that lacks the advantages a school like IU has. He doesn’t land the best recruiting classes (in part because of coaching at Purdue), but over the past 9 seasons he has finished below 4th in the conference once and won it 3 times. That’s with zero top 30 recruiting classes. So, sure, nobody predicted Purdue winning the conference, but Painter regularly exceeds expectations. His teams do better than they should. When is the last time IU exceeded expectations? If Woodson wants to field a tournament team next season, he has to be a portal rockstar. Thus far he hasn’t been anything special in the portal. We’ll see if he can change that this season. -

Probably not, but Mike Woodson isn’t Matt Painter. We have a ton of holes to fill, and a whole lot of production to replace. We’ll see how the offseason goes. We certainly will have a lot of playing time to offer at, we’ll, every position. -

I’ll be absolutely shocked if IU makes the tournament next season. We’re likely losing 4 of 5 starters. We had 4 bench points across two tournament games. Galloway and Reneau are really the only B1G caliber players I see on this roster barring Xavier’s waiver being granted. Our 2023 recruiting class is mediocre as it stands now. Woodson and his staff have a lot of work to do this offseason. -
We don’t have unlimited NIL funds. If we did, we wouldn’t get outbid on top transfers. Idk how much players get in NIL. Say Leal got $50k this year. If the giver of that $50k didn’t give it to Leal, they’d have an extra $50k to throw at a package for someone else. Leal paying off his sister’s loans is a nice story, but it doesn’t help IU win basketball games. I only care about our NIL going toward Ws.
-
This will be controversial, but I wish that they wouldn’t waste NIL money on players of Leal’s caliber. No offense to him, but he played 24 minutes this season. He played 11 minutes in conference play. Those are walk-on numbers. I’d rather all our money go to contributors.
-
Team needs shooters. We only took 15.5 a game. That’s 352nd in the country, last in the conference. You’re fighting an uphill battle taking so few threes in 2023 basketball.
-
Momentum can stop very quickly. Next season looks this a very rough one at this stage. Idk how anyone could argue differently right now. That could change, sure, but the team needs a ton of additions to stay where we’re at now. We’re losing the majority of our starters and the bench was largely nonexistent.
