Henninger and Carson really helped the team by finishing 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in 1m diving. That is 33 points right there. 200 free relay finished 11th, up from their 16th seed. IU is in 4th place after day 2. Before diving and the relay, they were in 6th place so those two events really helped, especially the diving. They are 1 point up on Texas. This wasn't expected to be a big one for IU, the next 2 days should see more scoring from the swimmers. https://swimswam.com/2024-mens-division-i-ncaa-championships-day-2-finals-live-recap/ It looks like IU, Texas, and NC State are battling for 4th place. That’s good company to be competing with. If anyone happens to see this that doesn’t really follow swimming it is worth paying attention to Leon Marchand from ASU. He may be the closest thing we see to Phelps. They even have the same coach. This may end up being one of the fastest SCY meets ever. Class of '66 Old Fart 1 Quote

The top times have been insanely fast and Marchand has already broken 2 NCAA records. 1:28. 200 free (as lead off in the 800 free relay) and a 4:02. 500 free. 1st person under 1:29 in the 200 and the 500 record he broke was his own (set not long ago) which was 4:06. He didn't start swimming the 500 free competitively very often until recently. He basically chooses which events he wants to win at the championship meets. Insanity. Lots of other records NCAA/US Open/American/meet/pool records are being broken. This event is in the IU Natatorium which already has fast times so breaking the pool records there isn't easy. I think every final has had a record of some sort up to this point. So very fast. go iu bb and Class of '66 Old Fart 2 Quote
go iu bb Posted March 29, 2024 Posted March 29, 2024 IU is going to score some points today. It looks like IU and NC State will pull away from Texas in the battle for 4th place. 400 IM: IU has no one, NC State has the 16th seed 100 fly: Frankel (2nd), Brooks (16). NC State will score big points in this event with 2 swimmers in the A final and another 2 in the B final. 200 free: Miroslaw (6th). NC State has no one. 100 breast: Matheny (8th), Yep (14th). NC State has no one. 100 back: Burns (7th). I expect Burns to place much better than his seed, possibly win although Lasco (Cal) has been on fire this meet and is the top seed after prelims. NC State also has a swimmer in the A final and one in the B final. The divers could again score big points but those prelims have not yet finished. So that is 4 A finals for IU with 2 B finals. NC State has 3 A finalists along with 4 in the B finals. Texas has only 1 swimmer in an A final and 2 in B finals. https://swimswam.com/2024-mens-division-i-ncaa-championships-day-3-prelims-live-recap/ Edit: After diving prelims are finished, IU has 3 divers moving on to the evening. Henninger (2nd), Tyler (3rd), and Weinrich (13th). NC State has none and Texas has 2 (9th and 15th). Class of '66 Old Fart and go iu bb 1 1 Quote
go iu bb Posted March 30, 2024 Posted March 30, 2024 IU had 2 individuals win national championships on day 3. Burns in the 100 back and Tyler in the 3m diving. All scorers for IU: 100 fly: Frankel (2nd), Brooks (15th) 200 free: Miroslaw (5th) 100 breast: Matheny (6th), Yep (12th) 100 back: Burns (1st) 3m Diving: Tyler (1st), Henninger (2nd), Weinrich (15th) Great job by the divers to score some points. IU was up on NC State by 4 points before this event. After they were up by 43. 400 medley relay: 5th At the end of day 3, IU is in 4th place, up 41 points on NC State. https://swimswam.com/2024-mens-division-i-ncaa-championships-day-3-finals-live-recap/ Edit: Florida's relay team was disqualified. That moves IU up to 4th in the 400 medley relay. They're actually only 26 points behind Florida for 3rd place after that. I don't think IU catches them but it would be amazing if they did and a lot of credit would have to go to the divers. On the day, IU was outscored only by ASU (who is in 1st place) and that was by a mere 2 points. IU scored 140 points on the day, 39 points better than their seeds entering the meet. What a day. https://swimswam.com/2024-ncaa-mens-championships-day-3-scoring-analysis-gators-crash-hoosiers-soar/ Class of '66 Old Fart, WayneFleekHoosier, LIHoosier and 1 other 3 1 Quote

go iu bb Posted March 30, 2024 Posted March 30, 2024 Final day of the championship meet. Barring something crazy like a relay DQ, I think IU will stay in 4th place. The divers might be able to get IU over Florida for 3rd place but I don't think so. 200 back: Burns (6th), Westering (14th) - IU 1 A final/ 1 B final, NC State, 1/1 Florida 1/0 100 free: Miroslaw (15th) - IU 0/1, NC State 0/1, Florida 1/1 200 breast: Yep (6th), Reich (10th) - IU 1/1, NC State 0/1, Florida 0/1 Matheny DQ with a time that would've been in the B final. Unfortunate. 200 fly: Frankel (7th), Burns (8th) - IU 2/0, NC State 2/0, Florida 0/0 The 1650 free is where I gets hurt and having Hafnaoui would've helped. Florida and NC State each have 2 swimmers seeded in the top 8, so I'll consider them A finalists even though there are no prelims for that event. They also have a few swimmers outside the top 16 but close enough that a good swim might move them into scoring position. I expect the divers to score some points but that will basically offset the 1650 points. Edit: IU gets 3 divers into the A final, including the top 2 seeds. Tyler (1st), Weinrich (2nd), and Henninger (7th). The divers are so good this year. For the 400 free relay, Florida and NC State are seeded higher than IU. So I think IU will finish 4th at the meet. https://swimswam.com/2024-mens-division-i-ncaa-championships-day-4-prelims-live-recap/ Edit: After diving, IU has a legit chance to catch Florida. This is including diving and assuming the swimmers in the 1650 perform close to seed: IU: 7/3, NC State: 5/3, Florida: 4/2 Edit: This projection agrees that IU has a real chance to overtake Florida. It will be close. https://swimswam.com/2024-ncaa-mens-championships-day-4-ups-downs-asu-and-cal-at-the-top-updated/ Class of '66 Old Fart and go iu bb 2 Quote
go iu bb Posted March 31, 2024 Posted March 31, 2024 IU had a great meet and challenged for 3rd place but ended up 4th by 2 points. 200 back: Burns 7th, Westering 13th 100 free: Miroslaw 14th 200 breast: Yep 7th, Reich 12th 200 fly: Frankel 4th, Burns 8th Platform diving: Tyler got his 2nd NC of the meet, Weinrich 2nd, Henninger 7th 400 free relay: 9th https://swimswam.com/defending-ncaa-title-bittersweet-as-brendan-burns-reckons-with-end-of-swimming-career/ Carson Tyler will probably win diver of the meet with his 2 wins. If he doesn't, I would think it would be Henninger with 2 2nd place finishes and another A final with the 7th place today. What's great is that the 3 divers who kicked so much a$$ this meet should all be back next year, 2 juniors and a sophomore. This was an exciting meet and they were soooo close to getting 3rd. Here's an interview with Burns. https://swimswam.com/defending-ncaa-title-bittersweet-as-brendan-burns-reckons-with-end-of-swimming-career/ WayneFleekHoosier, Class of '66 Old Fart and go iu bb 2 1 Quote

go iu bb Posted May 1, 2024 Posted May 1, 2024 Miroslaw will represent Germany at the Olympics. I saw that he is the first IU to swim for them. It looks like he'll be swimming the 200m free and be on the 4x100 free and 4x200 free relays. Since they're only sending 1 swimmer in the 100m free, I'm guessing Miroslaw hasn't hit the Olympic qualifying time in that event. The only guy they're sending in that event broke Miroslaw's German record earlier this year. Class of '66 Old Fart, go iu bb and BeerBQ 3 Quote
