3 and 1/2 problems I have with our offense.

Recommended Posts

1) we emphasize pushing the pace, which I believe in and support, but if we don't have a layup or wide open three in transition we pull the ball all the way out and restart the offense, giving away all the advantages that we have gained by putting the defense on their heels in in transition.

This does not make sense considering problem two.

2) we design our actions with only the end of them in mind. our players move (and go through the motions) just to get the ball to a particular person in a particular place with a particular match up. Crean says designs these actions to force the defense to move before we attack...but, haven't we forced that in transition, why give up that advantage just to try to regain it? Anyway, my problem is that we do not make reads within the action because we are just going through the motions until the desired end of the action is reached. we miss opportunities to take advantage of what the defense gives us throughout the action.

3) Because we are going through the motions just to get to the ending point of the action we are a terrible screening team. This is true on the ball and off the ball, but I think that it makes sense given Max Bielfeldt's comments last week that Beilein is a teacher and that crean relies on passion. The detail of setting the screen and then sealing to take advantage of how the defense guards the screen is lost and we rarely make the defense pay for hedging too hard on our shooters etc....

3.5) we do not make reads off of any screens...we go exactly where the play was written to go. We do not respond when he defender goes under the screen by flaring to the corner or curl the screen when the defender chases and the big doesn't show....we are awful at screening and reading screens. most people complain that we don't set enough screens off the ball. I disagree, we set enough screens but they are sloppy and poorly executed.

To point 2 there is one problem with your comment on moving, we don't move much.  4 players standing around watching isn't unusual.  When there is a little bit of movement there is seldom movement with intent, they're pretty much just going through the motions.  Most of the movement in our street ball offense is the ball handler.

Man, I hate our half court offense.

Yeah the last couple of years I think our movement and passing have improved. During the V Jones first couple years here it was almost unwatchable! We would see the half court set on TV but hey where the hell is the ball?? Oh V Jones is out at mid cout wearing that ball out! The officials probably had to replace it at half time.

It's still almost unbearable with way too much dribbling.

I do believe that we move more than we used to, but from what I see we run past each other rather than really screening and we ignore reads throughout the action just waiting for the isolation at the end of it. The only effective cutting we do consists of back cuts from the corner, or dive cuts from the top as we drive the baseline. You might be able to include weak side slides from block to block as we drive the lane, but that's it.

all of the stagger screens for zeisloft last year we incredibly ineffective. easy to guard and zero effort to take advantage of the way the defense guards the screen.

Agree with just about everything you said.  We are very poor at using the few screens we set; the screens we do set are ineffective and not solid, and I still don't understand why we don't set screens to get shooters open.  We never did it for Hulls, we don't do it for Blackmon....I don't get that.  We don't attack mid-possession...which is stupid.  We attack early, and if we don't get what we want, we frequently do nothing productive for 20 seconds or more.   And yes....we stand way too much.  Passion's great for any leader.  You have to have that to be successful, whether it's shown outwardly or not.  But, you also have to have a plan and an idea of execution.  You're right...Crean struggles mightily at the execution piece, and he's not very good at on the fly adjustments.

An entry pass to the post now and again will open up shooters.

Last year that wasn't really an option ,but with TB that should change.

It really frustrating to see a post, mid possession, his defender sealed one on one begging for the ball and then a bad shot jacked up as time expires.

 Hope that changes.

It didn't change with Zeller or Vonleh, what makes you think it'll be any different now?
