NORTH AUGUSTA, SC - Some big performances happened on night one at the Nike Peach Jam. One of the best was from Nick Richards. In a battle of top 100 centers Richards flexed his muscle and helped his team to a win.

At times during the spring Nick Richards was inconsistent with his effort and with his production. However he decidedly couldn’t be questioned in either department on Wednesday night at the Peach Jam in helping his team to a big win.

In a matchup with four-star center Luka Garza, Richards was just fantastic. The big time talent went for 16 points (on 8-8 shooting) and 17 rebounds. While he did foul out and miss overtime, it was Richards energy and effort that stood out.

Nick Richards

Richards is a highly promising rim protector who soars for blocks, rebounds and general defensive menace. He's a fine athlete who shows signs of a solid offensive post game as well, but for the time being he's clearly at his best on the other end of the court. He's a blue-chip center who boasts tremendous talent and will be a featured attraction in the 2017 class going forward.

If there is one major lingering concern with Richards it is that he has inconsistent hands, and at times that was still the case on Wednesday, but he did do a fairly decent job of catching the basketball in traffic.  [Uwe 2.0?]

What Richards does best is rebound and block shots. The 17 rebounds was absolutely dominant, and then he also blocked or altered numerous shots, and even was called for a few fouls on shots that looked to be clean blocks as well.

In the stands watching Richards was an assortment of coaches. Head Coaches included John Calipari, Tom Crean, and Kevin Ollie. Also assistants from Arizona, Duke, and Syracuse were present watching the game.

Richards has a recruitment that is likely to be an extended process. Right now the plan is for him to make numerous official visits in the fall before coming to a decision, and at least at the moment it appears as though he is fairly open in the process.

He definitely did nothing to hurt his stock on Wednesday, and played about as well as he has in quite some time. More efforts like this and Richards is sure to make a jump back up in the rankings after the summer evaluation period.

6 minutes ago, Class of '66 Old Fart said:

2017 five-star big Nick Richards (@n1ck_richards) tells @jeffborzello his final five are Kentucky, Arizona, UConn, Syracuse and Indiana.

Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick 5-star center Nick Richards has a top five of Kentucky, Arizona, Connecticut, Syracuse and Indiana, according to Jeff Borzello of ESPN.

Richards (6-11, 235), who was named to the All-Peach Jam Second Team after averaging 12.2 points, 12.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks for Expressions Elite, is ranked 19th overall and the No. 2 center nationally according to the industry-average 247Sports Composite.

Kentucky coach John Calipari has been among the coaches watching Richards, along with teammate and fellow UK targetTremont Waters, at the Fab 48 event in Las Vegas this week. He says UK, along with Syracuse and UConn, are the three schools recruiting him the hardest.

The Wildcats are viewed as the unanimous favorite to land Richards, representing all eight of the predictions on his 247Sports Crystal Ball.

Nick Richards was asked what he likes about his five schools recruiting him the hardest and here's what he said about IU...

"Indiana, I don't really know much about them."

But he said his recruitment is still wide open and could commit to any school (who knows how true that is).

Only wants to visit Arizona, Syracuse and Kentucky right now.

(Evan Daniels Scout article is where I got that)
