Your obligatory facilities update...

Recommended Posts

i assume memorial stadium's press box will soon be getting a makeover as well.  wonder what will be constructed in place of the sembower and old softball field.  that area has been a wasteland for 2.5 years.  prime real estate.  surely there's a plan for it.  i'd guess student housing but an athletics facility like a volleyball/wrestling gym would make sense.  there's a ton of unused open space around it to turn into parking including those ugly basketball/tennis courts seldomly used.  or maybe it's being saved for an inevitable new varsity sport(s) like hockey, gymnastics, lacrosse, etc.  thats years away though.

The old baseball/softball fields are being turned into fields for rec sports. The plan was recently approved by the trustees. The new volleyball/wrestling facility is going in one of the parking lots by AH (I believe by Cook Hall). The press box has gotten some interior improvements, but Glass has said previously that a new press box is down on his list.

One other thing the football expansion will do is allow us to double the size of the locker room/player's lounge, since the function of the Hoosier Room next to it will now be in the SEZ.

Thanks for the links, interesting read.

No Armstrong improvements planned?  Our soccer team deserves the best, possibly more than any sport at IU.

Glass said they have some things planned, but it won't be one of the big 3 projects in the upcoming campaign.

I would LOVE to see an ice rink and also see IU's hockey team move up to the Big Ten D-1, although I would guess if that were ever to happen it will be way after my kid (sophomore) has graduated

couldn't agree more. Wish I still had eligibility to play D1 for the Hoosiers. That would have been incredible!

What a crock! We have to tie student football to basketball tickets in an attempt to fill seats! One thing Glass is good at is wasting money!

Ummmm...what? We aren't even adding seats. They're building a support building for the entire athletic department with a Gameday club area that will increase capacity by like 50. It will have beer. Our club seating sells out every week.

IU's current administration weighs in in an intelligent and thoughtful way, with it's solution to everyday life!

Will someone please address why it is ok for
Glass to require students to buy football tickets to qualify for basketball tickets?

If we keep buying them, there's no pressure to change it. Until we get to a point where they aren't selling more than the student section holds, it won't change.

Why not go back to the way student tickets were distributed several years ago? A pool of all students applying for tickets were compiled, number of students to home games were calculated which rendered the number of home games each student would get. Students were given a season pass, the pass was punched at the gate. Seat numbers printed in the applicable games. In this way, students were given a fair number of games with seats in the lower arena, floor and balcony. Worked great, eliminated scalping student tickets, but allowed students to let friends use their ticket if unable to attend a game.

Besides having individual game tickets compared to the pass (which I'm unfamiliar with), how is it any different than what we do now? Because couldn't they just say "to buy the season pass you also are buying football tickets"?

Right, but just because you sell students tickets, it doesn't mean they attend games. If the idea is to drum up support for football, it doesn't work. Plenty of evidence this season, when we played like s..., the students left. After halftime, nearly every home game, students didn't stay to 'support' the team.
If the motivation is to boost football's bottom line, then coercing students to buy tickets is at the very least, a dirty trick. This is one reason I believe that Fred Glass will be departing soon.
My point with this is that each team should stand on its own, and let the students have the choice about whether or not they wish to buy tickets for each individual sport. I know of no other Indiana college that has this policy in place.

That makes sense. It's just hard for me to look at it through other eyes because I'm going to be buying football and basketball regardless, so this just makes it more convenient for me personally. Maybe they could lower the price and say "buy basketball and get football free"...??
