Hanner Perea's Defensive Impact

Recommended Posts

Removing all cupcakes from the schedule, including EWU, here are our opponents shooting percentages during our "marquee" non-conference games, B1G games with Hanner, B1G games without Hanner, as well as his average minutes played in each category.

Marquee Non-Conference (SMU, Pitt, UofL, Butler, GT):
Opp. FG% - 43.98%
Opp. 2FG% - 49.9%
Opp. 3FG% - 34.9%
HMP Mins - 25

B1G w/ Hanner (Neb, MSU, OSU):
Opp. FG% - 40.0%
Opp. 2FG% - 44.5%
Opp. 3FG% - 28.8%
HMP Mins - 13.3

B1G w/o Hanner (PSU, UofI, MD, OSU, PU, RU, UW):
Opp. FG% - 53.0%
Opp. 2FG% - 59.9%
Opp. 3FG% - 38.4%
HMP Mins - 0

First, none of these categories reveal a strong defensive team at any point this season, but the numbers do suggest this team is better defensively with Hanner. In the 8 games addressed in this breakdown in which Hanner played, only two teams shot above 50% from the field (SMU and GT). In the 7 games since his injury, 4 teams have done so with 3 of those teams shooting over 58%. Shooting from two point range, only two of the 8 teams shot 50% or better against us with HMP (GT 50%, MSU 51.1%). Since the injury, only one team has shot lower than 50% from two (PSU) and 4 have shot over 62%, including 73.6% and 71.8% performances by OSU and PU, respectively.

His minutes decreased between the non-conference and start of the B1G schedule, but based on the defensive drop since his injury, it's safe to say Hanner plays a critical role in the success of our defense.

I think there's definitely something to what you're saying. With Hanner we're still bad defensively...but without him we're terrible. Here's to an improved defense with his return, and may the three continue to fall! By the way, how in the heck do we get blown out at Wisky even after making 13 threes?!? Crazy!

AjD down to #264

surely we can't get any worse than this.. waiting on someone to bring this up to coach in the presser to see what he has to say. Maybe we can throw this garbage 2-3 out and just hedge people to avoid mismatch switches. Please Cody, come back and teach these guys how to hedge.

I really think Hanner's impact doesn't show up on the stat sheet. His value really is just being a big, long-armed body clogging up driving lanes.

You would think not but I can see it taking another hit after the Maryland game.

emmit still hasn't started and hasn't had all that many minutes in his absence. Just saying holt isn't the problem

Oh sorry if that's how that came across. I just meant that I liked what Hanner did and thought he was having a big impact in the games we had won and didn't think he should be pulled from the lineup.

Holt is good too, I just liked what I saw from Hanner.
