This is a team-university thing, not a cop thing I would adjust that slightly: They absolutely had a 'legit', statutorily-supported basis to charge. Whether discretion should have been used is a completely different matter, and I tend to agree with your conclusion on that one. Good policing for me would have been the officers meeting with the player and his coach, and letting him know that if there was ever another incident like that again he would be charged. Way better than sticking a misdemeanor criminal record on a very frustrated 19 year old who was being taunted by 16,000 people. Quote

It’s exceptionally stupid, and an absolute abuse of “discretion.” The almost certain result is that no prosecutor will pursue this idiotic charge, but now the kid has an arrest record. If law enforcement wants to get communities behind them, they shouldn’t be sticking criminal charges on young people without a damn good reason.
