Adventures in Furniture Shopping

Recommended Posts

So I have to share my most recent furniture shopping experience with you all as I'm sure (at least I hope I'm not the only one) some have had similar experiences.  And to warn those young fellas out there who haven't started the 'process' yet!

It was successful.  Now I’m broke.

Moving from a townhouse w/less than 1,000 square feet to a house w/2,500 requires a lot more furniture.  We didn't bring much with us on our move as far as furniture goes.  Most of our stuff was either hand-me downs or el cheapo crud that 'got us by'.  Thus far we’ve bought a love seat, 2 recliners, a sectional, an end table, and a bedroom set (minus bed) for my son.

But the worst by far was shopping for the sectional.  We sat on every friggin couch/sectional in the place (which was the size of the small city).  We spent probably 3-4 hrs there (2 separate trips) trying out what will fit our butts.  We FINALLY came to a consensus (I prefer a stiffer seat w/springs, my wife wants to be swallowed whole by the couch) and a middle ground.

Then the sales guy is like “Great, now let’s look at fabric”.  The paperwork sitting by the sectional said there were 5 different fabric options.  I’m like OK cool.  This should be easy and quick.  Then we walk over to this wall that’s the size of the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial covered in fabric swatches.  I was thinking fabric designs…not freaking fabric types.  Obviously a rookie mistake.  I’m like WTF!?  I literally told my wife that I’m done and she can pick the fabric.  I left the area and watched some football with the other sales guys (it's Sunday, slow day).  I also walked around with the kids (they had a blow-up bouncy castle which was nice) so that kept them occupied for a while.  I’d walk back every 20 minutes or so.  This went on for 3 days (ok…maybe an hour or so, but it felt like 3 days).  Finally my wife found the fabric she liked (she's an interior designer/decorator so I trusted her decision) and we signed the dotted line and paid the bill.  I knew it would be a few weeks to get it shipped and delivered…thinking two, possibly three.  The gal handling the paperwork says five weeks!!!  5 f’ing weeks!!!!  I’m going to die from Ebola before my sectional even arrives!!  UHHHHHGGGG!!!  NEVER AGAIN!

That ends my adventure in furniture shopping.  NEVER AGAIN!

I can't wait to buy the 70" tv that I earned with this trip!  At least that will be a fun shopping trip!
