Should IU sell Beer?

Recommended Posts

Here is yet another article talking about schools turning to selling alcohol at football & basketball games as extra revenue.

Couple Key Quotes from article:

  • According to an Associated Press survey of the 21 beer-selling schools that own and operate their stadiums, about half their concessions revenue is derived from alcohol.
  • "Beer sales have produced no less than $516,000 each of the past three years for West Virginia, and campus police report that alcohol-related incidents at Mountaineer Field have declined sharply."
  •  Akron athletic director Tom Wistrcill said offering beer is a way to "enhance the fan experience."

This is a serious no brainer for me.

  • Sell alcohol in memorial stadium.
  • More people will show up
  • More people will STAY.
  • More $$$$ for the Athletic department!

What do you guys think? Pros? Cons?

More students would go that's for sure. I'm all for drinking, it's my favorite hobby, but giving already liquored up students more beer doesn't sound like a good idea. The phrase "drinking responsibly" doesn't exist at IU.

I honestly think this would cause students to actually drink more responsibly.  I can't even begin to count how many beers/ shots I downed in the 15 minutes prior to games before walking in.  It was like a pre game ritual to get the booze in before going and sitting beerless for 1.5 hours until half time.  Selling beer basically end that "tradition" for a bunch of students. (and PLENTY of alumni)

as long as there are fruits, vegetables, and certain grasses that are willing to ferment,

there will be folks willing to partake...

your conviction is enough to convince you to a certain lifestyle...it will never be enough for somebody else's....

either you can control yourself, or you can't...selling beer at a stadium doesn't change any of that...

If any program in the history of college sports needed to give its fans beer during games, it's IU football. I'll drink a beer or six, I just don't want Sorority Sarah tossing her cookies on my lap or Fraternity Fred trying to start a pissing contest because he has short man syndrome.

let's be honest with ourselves...the price of beer that will be charged will far exceed what students are willing to pay...

for the rest of us...well...

you and I know we will pay it...begrudgingly...but we will pay it.

No they shouldn't because then they would to check every ID for every student or fan that doesn't look over 21. It would also make it way more crowded at the concession stands and IU football would lose some of it's family appeal. I remember at my first colts game a drunken fan screamed at me and made me cry as a 7 year old kid. So I'll always be against alcohol in public places.

They could put a special sticker on each student ID and upon entrance that student receives a wristband indicating they are over 21. For alumni/fans they could do ID checks outside of the gate or in the stadium and do the same thing. Trust me, whether alcohol is sold in the stadium or not people will be drunk and people will always be @$$holes at sporting events. My concern is more that people will drink like they normally do before games and continue to drink. Before entering the stadium I remember doing about 6-7 shots in about two minutes just so our buzz would last until halftime when we could leave because we were losing.
