We only had 5 hits and 3 of them were from Brittany Ford who also batted in 3 of our 4 runs. Illini had 8 hits off Johnson and Foor who only allowed 3 earned runs. We committed 3 errors that led to Illinois' other 3 runs. Quote

Class of '66 Old Fart Posted May 1, 2022 Posted May 1, 2022 Women salvage a 3-2 win in dramatic fashion for their last home game of the season. Game was scoreless after 10 innings. Illinois scored 2 in the top of the 11th. In the bottom of the 11th, we loaded the bases and Ford hit one to the wall over the head of the centerfielder driving in all 3 base runners for the win. Johnson pitched into the 11th scattering 10 hits but not allowing any runs until the 11th as the Illini left 10 runners on base in the game. We only had 5 hits in the game but Ford got the important one. Today's win moves our season record to (26-19) (9-11) and the regular season will end next weekend on the road at Nebraska. Quote
Class of '66 Old Fart Posted May 8, 2022 Posted May 8, 2022 Women are at Nebraska for the final weekend of the regular season. We won Friday's game 5-0 but lost yesterday 7-2. In Friday's game, Heather Johnson pitched a complete game 3-hit shutout and didn't walk any batters. Taylor Minnick went 3-3 and had 4 RBIs. In yesterday's game we could only manage 4 hits. Nebraska had 7 hits off 4 IU pitchers and we committed 5 errors which led to 6 of Nebraska's runs. Today's game scheduled to start at 1:00 ET. Quote

Brittany Ford accounted for 3 of our runs with a 3-run HR in the 5th. We only had 5 hits, 1 of which was Cora Bassett's 19th double of the year, a program record. On the flip side, the Huskers pounded out 13 hits off Johnson and Foor. Quote

This season the Nittany Lions won two out of three against the Hoosiers. Scouting the Opponent Penn State comes in with a 31-21 overall record and 13-10 mark in the Big Ten. Bassett recorded her 19th double of the season to set a new Indiana program record for doubles in a season. The previous record of 18 was set in the 2021 season by Gabbi Jenkins, who is now a volunteer assistant coach for the Hoosiers. Bassett also tied the Hoosiers single season record for runs scored in a season with 57. That record was set in the 1994 season by Michelle Venturella. Venturella was the 1994 Big Ten Player of the Year, was an alternate for the 1996 Olympics and won a gold medal with USA Softball at the 2000 games in Sydney, Australia. Comeback Kids When an opponent has scored two or more runs this season the Hoosiers have responded with two or more runs of their own in the next half inning 17 times this season across 16 games. The Long Ball The Hoosiers have set a single season school record for home runs with 56 this season. This is a big improvement from last season in which Indiana hit 28 home runs. The previous school record was 51 set in the 2015 season. Attacking the Next 60 Feet The Hoosiers rank 11th among NCAA DI softball teams in stolen bases at 2.35 per game. Tatum Hayes leads the Big Ten in stolen bases with 29. The Hoosiers have stolen 113 bases this season compared to 37 from their opponents. Lindsey Warick has thrown out 12 runners trying to steal bases this season, which ranks second in the Big Ten. 2 Out Hitting Indiana has scored 85 runs this season with two out, including 14 games in which they have scored three or more runs with two outs. Not at all. I am as critical as anybody usually but Stanton has made softball very competitive every year she has been here. They have not been elite but they are a very competitive team in the Big Ten now. Before she got here they were a bottom feeder in the conference. Don't get expectations out of whack. As long as team continues to be competitive and compete in the middle of the conference as they are since she has been here that is all anyone can reasonably asked for softball and anything else is a bonus. Class of '66 Old Fart Posted May 19, 2022 Posted May 19, 2022 Bassett Earns NFCA All-Region Accolades Junior second baseman Cora Bassett earned placement on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Region Second Team, the organization announced today. Bassett had a stellar season ranking in the top-three in the Big Ten in five different offensive stat categories. Bassett hit .400 for the season, one of only four Big Ten athletes to hit .400 or better. Bassett had 62 hits, 13 home runs, 34 RBI, 16 stolen bases, a .774 slugging percentage and a .505 on base percentage. Her .400 batting average ranked as the ninth best for a single season in program history and her .774 slugging percentage ranked third for a season in program history. Bassett's 13 home runs also tied for the third most in program history. Bassett tallied 19 doubles, which lead the Big Ten and established a new Indiana school record for doubles in a season. Bassett ranked second in the conference in runs scored with 57, which is tied for the Hoosiers single season record. Bassett ranked sixth in the NCAA in runs per game. Bassett was a force for the Indiana Hoosiers last season. She hit .400 on the season, ranking third in the Big Ten and was one of four players to hit a .400 or better. Bassett held a .774 slugging percentage and now holds the third highest percentage in a season in program history. Bassett started in 49 games and totaled 62 hits, 57 runs scored, 19 doubles, 13 home runs and tallied 34 RBI's. She set Indiana school records in a single season in doubles and runs scored. She also moved up into the top-10 in program history in slugging percentage and batting average. Bassett led the Big Ten in doubles and ranked second for runs scored.
