K***** S****** to Houston?

Recommended Posts

Rumor has it that the University of Houston is looking at hiring Kelvin Samsung. I read through the comments on the ESPN article and a lot of Houston fans were clamoring for, wait for it.... Mike Davis. Which move seems the smartest? Samsung is a better coach but is just as likely to take them to the tournament as he is to take them to the death penalty.

I think we all knew that KS would end up coaching in college again, and I honestly feel this might be a good fit. He's already in Houston and Houston is a program with some history and tradition but also with relatively low expectations.

For sure. He was a hell of a recruiter and coach. I fully believe it he wouldn't have gotten fired at IU we'd have at worst another final four, and really think we could have won the whole thing with him. Many didn't like the players he brought in, but I think a lot of those issues arose from the phone gate surrounding the program.

I'm willing to bet that would be one of the tougher tickets to get in the season. I mean that.

You mean like the 19 "F"s that his players had by the end of the season? Or the lighters found in lockers? Or the oh so many extra curricular activities from Basset? Those issues? The phone thing may be legal now, but make no mistake, Kelvin Samcrap was tarnishing IU Basketball

Nailed it on the head.

Not saying those issues weren't there, but I also think e stopped caring, as did the team when he knew he was a lame duck coach. I don't think those issues would have been there otherwise.

So players started using drugs and failing classes because they thought he was getting fired? I don't buy that one bit. Sorry

Not even close. It was happening, but it got worse when it all hit the fan with Sampson. The F's popped up with no stability in the program. Those players all finished school other places... The F's were a product of the environment.

He got caught lying about phone calls and was already on probation from the same thing at OK. Rather sorry way to go out but it was his choice. I remember when it came to suspensions which both Bassett and Crawford both received, Sampson was out front that they had broken university policy and would be suspended 1 or 2 games. Compare this to how Crean supposedly did or did not punish athletes who violated said rules. Jeremy "lost focus" and how about all of the other supposed positive results we have heard about without any suspension. Then Hanner only gets 2 games for hus DUI and probably should have sat the rest of the year.

So now we are comparing a guy who has graduated most of his players to a guy who left a program in shambles with 19 "F"s. No one has ever confirmed Jeremy failed a drug test, just rumors people have said on this site. The Hanner DUI thing bothered me as well, but my feelings on the matter are that a kid who is dealing with the law needs focus and needs stability. Crean gave him that. Kicking him off for the rest of the year would have further blackened a bad situation and he would have probably left the program. Crean looked out for a kid who was asking for help. In this case, basketball was exactly what Hanner needed

There is little question as to his eye for talent, ability to recruit or coaching but his integrity, ability to graduate players, those are the big questions. In my heart I want to wish him well, but just CAN'T!

Well he took OK to 11 NCAA's out of 12 years so he should do well. Being in the NBA should help his recruiting. Last but not least, there are no phone restrictions that he will need to lie about. Not sure if he will be on super probation coming off his no show clause which will keep the University on their toes. APR could be his biggest problem unless he develops a major like the North Carolina. Real Sports did a nice piece on them.

I actually was more excited about Sampson's hiring at IU, then I was Crean's. Obviously, In hindsight, Crean was the better hire for the university. I always liked Sampson's way of getting everything out of his players, and he seemed like a good " in game" coach. I had not been aware of his shadiness at Oklahoma, and thought he would get us back to winning. I am much fonder of the way Crean gets good kids, and tries to uphold the reputation of IU. I think Sampson will be a good coach for Houston, if he can run a clean program.
