2011-12, 2012-13 all we have? Can it ever happen again?

Recommended Posts

When indiana recruited Cody Zeller, he was a huge recruit that put indiana back on the map. Along with Cody, Victor developed into the player he could be. Indiana got the best out of Victor and got plenty from Cody (maybe wasn't NBA ready). But were those two seasons a fluke? Did they just have the best team that they could have? Pure shooter: Jordan Hulls. Athletic 7': Cody Zeller. Powerful finisher and all-around player: Victor Oladipo. Lightening quick and crisp passer: Yogi Ferrell. Shooter and all around small forward: Christian Watford.
Was that a team that had the perfect amount of experience and talent?
Could indiana have a TEAM that well developed again?
Or will it begin to recruit one and done's (Noah Vonleh)? And develop somewhat ball hogs (maybe Yogi)?
A true winning TEAM cannot be based off of either of those.
Can Indiana have a talented and experienced group any time within the next 5 years?

Please post your opinions.

I completely agree. Yogi was practically our whole offense on occasions. (ie:Indiana's victory over Michigan)
He did what he had to do to get the Hoosiers points.
But that's the problem. Yogi should not have to do that. He should not have to be the only option.

I do agree with that assessment. Hopefully guys like blackmon jr and Johnson can come in and knock down some shots as well as Stan and troy hitting the gym and working on their shooting. If they can free up some of the load on yogis shoulders I think yogi could evolve into the best point guard in the nation.

Too many variables IMO to say for sure over the next five years. Theoretically, it is possible. In this day and age of college basketball, recruiting classes have to be composed of elite talent and then raw talent that can be coached up. We have seen the benefit of developed talent in Oladipo. We've also seen the benefits of one and dones like Vonleh and Eric Gordon. A healthy mix is crucial- UK has, other than a few exceptional seasons, showed the issues of taking nothing but ones and dones. Programs need stability.

We need to recruit the right number of prospects who will develop into a strong supporting cast to pair with our stars. With the right roster management and training/work ethic I don't think it is impossible for IU to have a great, well-rounded team soon.

I agree with that 100%. I also do not think that CTC is in any need of being fired as head coach. This is only his first unsuccessful season. Besides the team he inherited his first year coaching the Hoosiers.

No, we can't do this again as long as Crean is coach. He may be a good recruiter, but he can't make his best recruits stay for a full four years, or at least three. And, to boot, he's only a mediocre coach, at best.

this team has so many problems to address. and yes yogi is a ball hog and plays out of control. this is the example of what kind of team we will have as long as CTC is there. CTC needs to go NOW or every year he gets to stay is going to be a year wasted. also he claps his hands to much [alias clappy] and drinks to much ice tea on the side lines.

Players need to stay at IU in order for CTC to be able to develope them, Cody should have stayed and Remmy Able should have stayed and Moe Creek should have stayed.

That's why many were disappointed with last year's tournament letdown because those loaded rosters don't come around too often. 2012-13 was our chance to win it all, because we had the horses. But we came up short. The reasons for that have been discussed plenty and I won't get into that... but now it's unknown as to when we can reach that level again.

The one thing Crean will have to work on in the future is to make sure we don't completely lose half of the roster like we did last year. We had a bunch of guys on the team this year who weren't anywhere near "ready" for success. True, you can't do anything about graduates and lottery picks. But Remy Abell and Mo Creek would've helped this team a lot. We needed better shooters, ball-handlers and experience on this team and they would have helped tremendously. Abell said he wanted more playing time somewhere else, which made absolutely no sense to me because he may have been a starter for us.

The fact is, at IU there is an expectation (or at least there used to be) that you're supposed to make the NCAA Tournament every year. If there's a year we do not, I would hope it's sandwiched around several years of successful, championship-level teams. Making the tournament only 2 of 3 years just won't cut it. Or at least it didn't used to.
