Gregg Marshall

Recommended Posts

Anyone watch Wichita State basketball enough to break down how Gregg Marshall coaches?

Looked over the roster and noticed that while they do have a few seniors getting minutes amongst their top 8 they also have a lot of younger guys getting a bulk of their minutes.

They won the NIT 4 years ago. Were a 5 seed 3 years ago but lost to VCU. Went to the final four last year. And are top 5 ranked this year.

His first year in the MVC they were 9th and jumped up to 5th then 2nd twice before winning last year. Great conference, no but decent enough.

Have not really watched them play much. Anyone have good insight on how he coaches? What kind of kids he recruits?

Not that we need a new coach, I was just curious. I remember liking him and The Wright State coach back when we brought in Crean.

Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

I'm from Kansas and went to Wichita State basketball camps as a kid. I have certainly been paying attention to Marshall.

He's a good coach, but I don't think we would get better results than what Crean is getting. Marshall is great at motivating players as the underdog. He plays the no one respects us card very well. I'm not convinced that he can translate that to a program like IU. He's also pretty damn lucky. His best player is redshirt sophomore Ron Baker. Baker is from a small western Kansas town and walked on at WSU. Everyone, including Marshall, just missed on the kid. Without Baker, WSU is not undefeated this season and did not make the Final Four last year.

Ah, so this explains the Royals loyalty. I was wondering how that happened.

It shouldn't be hard to figure out. Insanity and a high pain threshold explains the Royals love.

Coaches Coach. Expects a lot from players and does not coddle them. They would run thru a brick wall for him though. Teaches defense first which makes him stand out to me. Wins wherever he goes and improves year to year. Works officials and not afraid to speak his mind. I concur he has a chip on his shoulder. It gives him an edge. Sound familiar? Will go into the juco ranks if there is a need. Now highly paid at 1.6 per so could be hard to get him to leave. Fiercely loyal. Mentor John Kresse at College of Charleston. Notable assistants Jeff Meyer at Wintrop and Tom Creans favorate. He was my first choice at South Carolina that Frank Martin ended up getting. He would be my second choice to replace Crean behind Brad Stevens. Marshall is like a Bob Knight clone without the tampons in the players lockers. I think he's as close to the General as any in college basketball and may be the next great one.

I got lucky. It's a mystery how I became a Cardinal fan but they say I was around 3 or 4 when it started. No baseball fans in the family, certainly no Cardinal fans around to pick it up from. I just started out young all on my own and still diehard to this day. '85 was rough. I still have nightmares about Denkinger! After that the team just folded. Kind of like another team I follow has been doing of late.

It's kind of sad, but the Denkinger call is one of my best all time memories. Sorry. It was a terrible call. But awesome. So bloody awesome.

It's really not a mystery how I became a Royals fan. My family is from Kansas and I grew up there. ( Born in Indiana. Native Hoosier and all that. ) Dad was drafted out of high school way back in the day. His elbow was shot though so he didn't sign and went to college on a track scholarship. I was raised to love baseball.
