Q: Best Player on Offense in B1G? A: Yogi Ferrell

Recommended Posts

[quote name="Andrew_114" post="38658" timestamp="1392424762"]I haven't posted for a long time but I can't sit back and let people blast Yogi's assist to turnover ratio anymore. The same people that criticize Yogi are the same people that complain of Tom Crean's offense. According to you guys the offense revolves around streetball one on ones at the end of a shot clock. And if you know anything about basketball then you would know after catching a pass making a move, among other things, will negate an assist being awarded. If so, then how is Yogi to get that high of a number of assist? You can't have it both ways, and so I would say Crean's offense is a big reason for a low assist number.

Great to see you posting again Andrew! I think you were one of the first 10-15 members to sign up over a year ago! Great to see you're still around.

As far as what you said, I've never thought of his A/T ratio in that light. Makes total sense with Crean's offense that his assist numbers wouldn't be quite as high. That being said, he is 6th in the big ten in assists. Problem is he's like 4th in turnovers.

Hey, I dropped you off my follows list after you invited the masses to bring their pitchforks to the witch burning after the Penn State game the other night. You got record site hits... so your mission accomplished I guess. I know you don't miss me or even knew I followed for quite sometime but I don't miss that crap either. It's all perspective.

There is definitely a theory that Tom Crean's offense suppresses assists. Of course, the theory is normally advanced in the context of Crean can't be a winner because to win you need a good offense that gets a high ratio of assists to field goals. As part of the crowd that doesn't think Crean is good enough, I might be expected to agree with this theory. But, no, it's not a valid criticism.

I would posit that Tom Crean's offense does not unduly suppress assists and to the extent it does, it doesn't hurt.

The theory comes by observing coaches like Bill Self and Tom Izzo. Their teams are almost always in top 100 in assist to made field goals percentage. Since 2003, Bill Self has never had a team with A/FGM below 55%. Izzo has only once, last season.

Then we look at Tom Crean. He's only finished in the top 100 in A/FGM twice since 2003: with Marquette in 2003 and 2005. Last season, Crean's team was 157th in Division 1, so people looking for a reason to say why IU wouldn't win last season were knocking the low assists.

But, it doesn't matter. Everyone's favorite sleaze John Calipari has only had one team finish in the top 100: 2003 Memphis. In 2012 when UK beat the stuffing out of almost everyone they were ranked 292nd in A/FGM at 48.4%. For those who don't think Calipari can coach and want to see this as further proof of that, Coach K has not had a team in the top 100 in A/FGM since 2003, although Duke is on pace for it this season.

As for the idea that players in Crean's system can't get individual high assist totals, anyone who thinks that should look here: http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/travis-diener-1.html

Sorry for the tangent. It's one of the criticisms of Crean that irritates me.

I don't think height will be that big of a problem for Yogi. He can shoot, pass, and defend, and his pace for development and improvement should easily put him in the Association.

I hear you. I learned a long time ago you can't make everyone happy with every post. That specific pitchfork one was a joke. I think people over react constant and that is why I posted that.

As far as a site record goes, that's just part of running a site. Whether it be good or bad, my goal is to get more and more people to BtownBanners to add to our community. Sorry you stopped following because of that!

Other than the fact that he is already in mock drafts, has next level speed, and can score at a fairly high rate, I have no clue why people would think that.

Sometimes my sarcasm gets taken a little more serious than I intended. I should have done a vbg or something. Was just making a comment about you jumping in on all the fun that night. I'm sure the tweet was intended as a bit of humor but you were right there in the mix leading the troops with your pitch fork sharpened for battle. It happens.

He scores at such a high rate cause he is constantly shooting, ya he's fast but a lot of college players are. Show me a mock draft he is in, you are talking euro mock draft right? Actually share the link to the specific mock draft you have seen him in I've seen him in zero

I haven't seen any because I don't look. Someone posted on here the other day that he is #57 this year or something, so I'm going off of that, my apologies. You think he's just average in the speed department? That's your opinion, but he looks like the fastest player on the floor in nearly every game to me. He also is a pretty efficient shooter. 46% from 3, 54% effective FG%, and 85% from the free throw line is pretty decent if you ask me. I'll just keep my comment about how condescending your posts are to myself.

First of all my posts are incredibly condescending. He's well above average speed wise , way above average actually. He isn't on draftnet, draft express for either 14 or 15 in either round. And you can throw whatever fg% stats you want but the nba isn't looking for a 5'10" scoring point guard

Was there something about my posting that Yogi is the best overall offensive player in the conference you didn't understand? Do you need me to spell it out for you? I hope not because Yogi is one helluva basketball player.

You said he scores a lot because he is constantly shooting. His above average FG% shows that he's pretty efficient and not just a chucker, though he does at times. I never said he would be a star or even a mid to high 1st rounder, but I think he will get there thanks to his speed and ability to score.

For as much as he shoots you would hope our pg would atleast have a better than average fg%. Name the under 6 foot players who you even know of in the nba not to mention actually play. I'd be surprised if he ever plays 1 regular season nba minute
