Any Golfers around?

Recommended Posts

Been getting that itch to play again and can't wait for some warmer weather. A big time golfer and try to play 2-3 times per week if I can do it. Nothing more relaxing than hitting the links.

Bought the new RocketBallz irons from TalyorMade last season and it dropped my handicap from a 14 down to a 6.5. That obviously wasn't the only reason, but damn new clubs did wonders for me. I had been using some old clubs (still nice but were brand new in 96). Technology has come a LONG way.

This may sound funny, but I have never found comfort than anything other than my Titleist DCI.  They are old, but they just work for me.

Titleist, good club.  I'm using Solaris, a brand so obscure you can't even find them on Google and I'm not making that up.

Lol, when I haven't heard of them that is impressive.  I have been playing those Titleist for years.  I think the DCI brand quit soon after 2000 and I got them new if that says anything.  I have changed drivers over the years.  I always play a Scotty Cameron putter.  I have played Calloway drivers since my Sophomore year in high school.  Then the DCI irons with a Mizuno 60 degree.  I am a creature of habit.

My grandparents live on a golf course and get hundreds of balls hit at their house every year. I take my pick of the best ones the golfers leave in their yard, flowers, patio or wherever. So almost every gold ball I have in my bag is recycled.

Yeah, I am too.  At the same time, I tend to find a brand I like and I become loyal to that brand.  Like in my earlier post about my favorite glove being a Nike and wanting to try Nike balls.  I found a set of Nike VRS Covert on Ebay, irons/drivers/bag, new for about 50% off the MSRP.  Very enticing, but I don't know that they're not rip offs (and I don't trust the seller saying 'authentic' despite claiming they can be registered) and I still can't justify that expense for a set of clubs since I'm awful at golf.

Although I think a big part of my problem is something I need to fix in my swing.  My club face tends to open up dramatically just before impact so instead of driving the ball down the fairway it jets straight off away from me at around a 30-40 degree angle.  I've only been able to fix that problem for one hole, and on that hole I shot par (had a chance at birdie but missed the putt).  One hole is a real small sample size, but it's at least a bit of hope.

I had the same problem as far as a massive slice goes. I fixed mine by moving uncomfortably close to the ball to where it felt like my club would hit my foot as I swung. This worked on irons. Still have no idea how to hit my driver. Has me consistently playing at, or a few strokes above par for the most part. Worked for me, but I'm sure everyone is different.

The hole I shot par I did it by closing the club face before I started the swing.  That way as it opened instead of pushing the ball away from me it'd be square upon impact.

Sometimes at home I'll grab an iron and slowly go through the swing to try and isolate or fix the issue, but isn't the same as being on a course.  I really need to hit a driving range and work on it there.

I always crush the ball deep and straight at ranges. Step on a course with my driver and it ends up 2 holes over.

Yeah.  I used to have some plastic practice balls I'd hit in the yard and every time it'd be a straight shot.  I've thought about taking lessons to see if that'd help, but I'm not sure.

I just spend my time practicing my putting and short game rather than worrying about hitting a driver 250+ yards. I figure if I can get that down, then I have a chance of salvaging a decent round. Hopefully winter finally ends in my area and I can go play soon. One of the places I go to has a nice waterview.

Titleist is my brand of choice.  I have AP2 irons and 913 D3 driver with an older Titleist 3 wood and Titleist 21 degree hybrid.  The only thing in my bag that is not Titleist is a Ping putter.  The only reason I don't have a Titleist putter is my inability not to break my putter every once in awhile...  I also play Titleist Pro V1.

My grandfather got me into golf and preached that you play with the equipment you are given.  That helped me learn to play golf with blades and develop my swing.  However, as I have developed my game I have had to replace my clubs to match my swing.  It makes a huge difference what shafts you have compared with your swing speed.  I didn't believe it until I went to a Titleist demo day at a resort on the North Shore.  My launch angle and spin were horrible with normal shafts.  I ended up getting a heavier Diamana shaft that cut down on spin and launch angle.  I hit that 913 so well now without having to change my natural swing.

After playing golf for 17 years my biggest advice to anyone trying to play better golf would be spend more time on the range and double that time on the putting/chipping green.  Enjoy the game and those you play it with.

I am god awful at golf. I tried playing for about a year or so but I think I got worse the more I played. If you all shot 18 holes and I shot 1 I bet our scores would be the same.

If you consistently do something, you can really do one of two things.  Know how to change your swing to compensate for what your swing does.  The other thing is find the club with the right balance to compensate for your swing and straighten you out.  I think it is harder when you have a swing that is jacked up like 5 shots per 18.  No way to change that.  Usually your swing is fairly consistent if you make it out enough or have played long enough.  I went from a terrible slice to a slight draw when I lost weight.  My hips were making it through before my hands.  That has been the hardest adjustment I had since I started playing about 25 years ago.

Honestly, I am not near as good as I used to be.  I used to play high school golf for varsity.  That was great, because you got a free membership.  Also, Huntington North was good.  Very good.  My freshman year (Natty can vouch for this), Jon Oliver won the singles at state and got a scholarship to IU for that.  Now, I am lucky to get out 3 times a week.  Then, we got free memberships for being on the team.  Hell, I played all of the time in high school because of it.

I played in HS a little. I can drive the ball a mile(not literally) but there's no guarantee which way it's going. It's fun and relaxing though.

Ever heard of Accel clubs?  I got them for high school graduation...20 years ago.  I'd like to get new ones, but they cost more than I care to spend for the results I get.

^^^^ I have heard of Accel clubs.  Not common for sure.  Yeah, clubs have gotten expensive.  I wanted to get new Titleist Irons because I like mine so much and they are 15 years old.  They are in great shape.  I clean them religiously and have them re-gripped a few times.  When I found out I was looking at $1200, it wasn't worth it to me.  I only get out 2 or 3 times a week anymore.  If I was playing every day still, then sure.  I looked around and the cheapest irons seemed to be Cobra around here.  I am a feel person though.  If it doesn't feel right, then I will stick with what I know.

Adams makes pretty good clubs at a decent price, you could check them out.  Not as much of a household name because they don't have any big name pros on tour, but they are pretty good club.

I picked up my AP2s a few years back for about $500. My swing speed has increased again so I have to reshaft them but they are sweet. I can really work the ball well but when I go after a shot I pull the crap out of it.

I picked up the D3 for pretty cheap at the demo day. I think it was originally about $400 but got it for $300. I guess it's a matter of timing.
