2 things: 1) Any list including Nick Drake is good by definition. 2) Like Flies on Sherbert is a hell of an album, though I like High Priest a little better for no other reason than the stone nuts cover of Volare.

Got dragged to the Nugent show last night. That went about like I thought it would, BUT little did I know, the opener was Mark Farner and his American Band, who took us on a way-too-short journey into the Grand Funk catalog. 

Highly recommend catching a show to anyone within shouting distance of The Mill in Terre Haute. Really nice place and their schedule has gotten better every year since opening.

18. Best Female Singer...how can anyone pick one?  

I saw Diana Ross way back.  Super!

Grace Slick had some chops among other things.  Saw her too.  Props to Janice Joplin, too.

Linda Ronstadt had my attention...one could say. Yeah.

My wife loves Carole King. Great writer/singer, but once I heard her sing 'Natural Woman' I took her off my list.

Aretha Franklin, Billie Holliday, Nina Simone, Gladys Knight, Dionne Warwick & etc. Saw Dionne Warwick...must have been back in the 70's for the Little 5 weekend celebration (I think) and (was it?) Bob Hope introduced her in the Showalter Theater.  

I've seen Diana Ross and Grace Slick (JA)!  So it is between them.

Diana Ross wins in a squeaker.  Who would I rather see? Diana Ross or Grace Slick (with JA) in their prime?  Well, JA!

He’s a non-screechy rock tenor. In a world of Steve Perrys ruing my day and making my brain ache, that’s a rare and very good thing.

Randy Meisner was not a musical genius, but he’s alright by me.

There’s only three. The second, Bryter Later, is the only one where he plays above a whisper and with other musicians. Two members of Fairport Convention; the incomparable Richard Thompson on guitar and Dave Mattocks on drums, contributed to that one. There’s even (gasp) a few horns.

And while you’re at it, if it’s not on your radar, Fairport Convention, especially Liege and Lief and Unhalfbricking from their Sandy Denny era, are absolutely essential listens.

As much as Randy Meisner was a nice voice who, along with Bernie Leadon carried the Eagles in their “pre-sucky days,” the fact that more Americans listen to Glenn Frey than Sandy Denny and Richard Thompson is… very disappointing.

So to continue my tangent, if you’re a fan of folk music with bite, lyrical content, and musicianship, and you can get through Genesis Hall, the first track on Unhalfbricking, without being stunned by how good it is? I don’t know what to say. The whole album, from the Sandy Denny signature vocal Who Knows Where the Time Goes, to Percy’s Song, to the ultimate cover of Dylan’s Million Dollar Bash, is sublime.

Speaking of British bands worthy of a listen. Anyone on here heard of Shack? On the Corner of Miles and Gil or the Fable Sessions are both excellent albums. And thanks for the mention of Nick Drake more people need to listen to him.

Great great songwriter.

One of the most underrated, tasteful, extraordinary guitarists who will ever grace the planet. Could put so much emotion into his playing while maintaining incredible economy; not one note was for show; every bend was with purpose and passion.

The Band was just incredible. Great songs. Great musicianship. Not 1, but 3 fantastic singers. And did their own production work. Such talent.

Listened to Robbie Robertson’s self-titled album from ‘87 today. Had’t played it in ages. This is such an insanely beautifully produced piece of music by Robertson and Daniel Lanois. Turns out Lanois produced this album, Peter Gabriel’s “So” and U2’s ‘The Joshua Tree” all in a calendar year. That’s better than average.
