Listened to Robbie Robertson’s self-titled album from ‘87 today. Had’t played it in ages. This is such an insanely beautifully produced piece of music by Robertson and Daniel Lanois. Turns out Lanois produced this album, Peter Gabriel’s “So” and U2’s ‘The Joshua Tree” all in a calendar year. That’s better than average.

Guessing this isn’t necessarily the crowd, but my answer is and will always be Post Malone. 

Socialite from his new album makes me laugh out loud every time I hear it. Tender harmonies with some absolutely hysterical (and very NSFW) lyrics.

Quiz time!

Name me your five absolute, flat-out musical geniuses that led completely squared away lives. No major chemical or relationship issues AT ANY POINT (not someone that figured it out later), stable and happy while making shockingly great or distinctive music. It’s harder than one would think!

Bonus points if they were surrounded by chaos and madness, yet always maneuvered around it.

Was thinking of Bono, but the Edge is who made U2 distinctive musically, and the Edge has had demons.

This is a hard one. J Mascis if one considers him a guitar genius.

Jonathan Richman, though one truly iconic album doesn’t quite hit the genius category for me.

Maybe Todd Rundgren? A genius producer and pretty distinctive musician; the king of the seventh chords.

Great music is obviously subjective, but distinctive? How about Dave Grohl? One of the greatest drummers (turned frontmen) ever, who has been a part of one - and then started another - of the biggest rock bands in the last 30 years, who has dealt with some pretty horrific loss, while remaining one of the most beloved guys in entertainment. I can’t think of any marks on his record.

I thought of him and Chris Hillman. Put them both in the “productive, squared-away even when surrounded by madness, quite good” category but not distinctive or memorable.

Yeah, that’s tough. Assuming we’re talking about squared away within the confines of common human failings,  even Springsteen was divorced, and still alive, not even sure I can come up with 5:  In order of them coming to me: 1) John Fogerty, 2) David Byrne, 3) Peter Gabriel, 4) Jeff Tweedy, 5) Thom Yorke.

Every single 1 of those could be wrong.

Tweedy - no way. Painkiller addicted depressive who was saved by a great marriage. Listen to "Red-Eyed and Blue" or "Handshake Drugs." The man was not well for a good long time.

Byrne is autistic and had a series of f-d up relationships.

Fogerty is like Springsteen; once he settled in he was square forever more. He's on the "super-functional" list!

Surprised I got any. Pay almost no attention to their actual lives. Hell, went so far as to start typing George Clinton, thinking he was an edgy call who might get me a bonus point, and then remembered the pictures of him with coke all over his face.

The quiz was prompted by listening to a podcast about the life of Gram Parsons yesterday. Emmylou was extraordinary in that she was constantly surrounded by the Grams and Keef Richards' of the early 70's and yet she thrived on the straight and narrow. Almost impossible to imagine.
