Guessing this isn’t necessarily the crowd, but my answer is and will always be Post Malone. Socialite from his new album makes me laugh out loud every time I hear it. Tender harmonies with some absolutely hysterical (and very NSFW) lyrics. Stuhoo 1 Quote
HoosierHoopster Posted August 21, 2023 Posted August 21, 2023 Saddest album ever. -- Happiest album ever. -- Angriest album ever. -- The Battle of Los Angeles, Rage Against The Machine (what an album) Most relaxing album ever. The Dark Side of the Moon, Floyd Most amped-up album. ACDC's Back in Black Prettiest album. Hard one, will say The Weight is a Gift - Nada Surf, just for Always Love Funniest album or songwriter. Harry Nilsson ("Nilsson Schmilsson") Guilty pleasure album. -- Suki Waterhouse, I Can't Let Go. Supermodel, actress, and really good singer. This album is good, and "My MInd" is fantastic. I need to find her phone number.... Close 2nd: Celebrity Mansions, Dinosaur Pile-Up -- check out Thrash Metal and Back Foot, power chords / some Nirvana or Foo Fighters underlying sound. Close 3rd - Visions of a Life, Wolf Alice - for the song "Yuk Foo" Favorite album of the last five years. -- No idea Album that the world should have noticed, but completely ignored. -- Can't think of one completely ignored, but not enough credit, Heatmiser Mic City Sons (Elliott Smith - RIP, another one gone too early) -- BTW, for you guys who like Nick Drake, listen to Elliott Smith if you haven't (his songs are featured in Good Will Hunting) Artist that the world should have noticed, but ignored. -- Me. Maybe there's still hope Favorite guitarist. Jimi Hendrix - many years before his time, no one comes close to his originality and depth. Favorite pianist. Richard Wright (Pink Floyd) or Ray Manzarek (Doors) if Rock. Favorite horn/string/woodwind player. Joshua Bell (an old friend) Favorite drum/bass/rhythm player. Either John Paul Jones (Zeppelin) or John Entwistle (the Who) Favorite songwriter. John Lennon or Kelly Jones (Stereophonics) Favorite male singer. Kelly Jones Favorite female singer. Currently torn between Suki Waterhouse and Ellie Rowsell (Wolf Alice). HoosierHoopster Posted August 22, 2023 Posted August 22, 2023 Since I'm still in my "guilty pleasure" mode, here's a Suki Waterhouse cut - My Mind -, a Wolf Alice cut - Moaning Lisa Smile, and a Dinosaur Pile-Up cut - Back foot. The latter two are flat out jams. And Suki ... Oh man. Quote

Stuhoo Posted September 5, 2023 Posted September 5, 2023 Quiz time! Name me your five absolute, flat-out musical geniuses that led completely squared away lives. No major chemical or relationship issues AT ANY POINT (not someone that figured it out later), stable and happy while making shockingly great or distinctive music. It’s harder than one would think! Bonus points if they were surrounded by chaos and madness, yet always maneuvered around it. My list? 1) Emmylou Harris, 2) Yo Yo Ma, 3) Springsteen 4) Nick Saloman 5) Henry Rollins Quote

Stuhoo Posted September 5, 2023 Posted September 5, 2023 Was thinking of Bono, but the Edge is who made U2 distinctive musically, and the Edge has had demons. This is a hard one. J Mascis if one considers him a guitar genius. Jonathan Richman, though one truly iconic album doesn’t quite hit the genius category for me. Maybe Todd Rundgren? A genius producer and pretty distinctive musician; the king of the seventh chords. Quote
Hovadipo Posted September 5, 2023 Posted September 5, 2023 Great music is obviously subjective, but distinctive? How about Dave Grohl? One of the greatest drummers (turned frontmen) ever, who has been a part of one - and then started another - of the biggest rock bands in the last 30 years, who has dealt with some pretty horrific loss, while remaining one of the most beloved guys in entertainment. I can’t think of any marks on his record. HoosierHoopster and Stuhoo 2 Quote

I can’t think of any marks on his record. I thought of him and Chris Hillman. Put them both in the “productive, squared-away even when surrounded by madness, quite good” category but not distinctive or memorable. Quote

The man was not well for a good long time. Byrne is autistic and had a series of f-d up relationships. Fogerty is like Springsteen; once he settled in he was square forever more. He's on the "super-functional" list! Demo 1 Quote

The quiz was prompted by listening to a podcast about the life of Gram Parsons yesterday. Emmylou was extraordinary in that she was constantly surrounded by the Grams and Keef Richards' of the early 70's and yet she thrived on the straight and narrow. Almost impossible to imagine. Quote
