In honor of my 60th birthday today, I'm bumping this thread with something majestically beautiful, sad, and complex.

For my b-day I'm going to the city park to hoop with people that will largely be decades younger than me, and I'm going to listen to Alex Chilton.

I recommend that you do the same.

Where did I get late 40's for you from? Happy Birthday and welcome to the Officially-Ain't-No-Doubt-About-It-You- Are-Indisputably-Old Club. And that is an excellent way to spend that day.

Still holding at 6'0", 175 -- keeps me able to hoop!

Immature enough to be 15, getting a little wiser with age.

Immaturity may be problematic when we’re young, but if you survive the early part it straight rocks when you’re old.

Okay, so this thread’s theme is music.  I’m 75 and I like Steely Dan…a lot.  LOL.  :)

Donald Fagan and Walter Becker are/were special…IMHO.

But are you aware of the origin of that band’s name?(!)

I’ve read a fair amount of Kerouac and Burroughs, Ginsberg, Ferlinghetti, Gregory Corso and other Beats show up in his works, ofc.  Gary Snyder also.

I’m a big fan of Jackson Browne too.  His song writing was/is really good.  Like listening to him when he was young.  Like so many, he’s lost his voice now.  But hell, he’s a year older than me…and I can’t sing anymore.  LOL.  Very fond of his song…”These Days”.

Alright, caught a gift. Punch Brothers, who are as good a live act as I’ve ever seen and I would enthusiastically recommend to anyone regardless of genre taste because they’re simply ridiculously talented, are playing in St Louis this weekend. Couldn’t go because of a family commitment that I was just released from. Checked tickets and found a single resale for $35 in a great spot. I’m an owner. So pleased. Punch Brothers and MJ Lenderman on back to back nights. Strong, strong  weekend.

Good lord, what could have been. Before there was Prince, there was Sylvester Stewart/aka Sly Stone; incendiary genius with unlimited talent. But unlike Prince, addiction scrambled his brain only about five years after he got going.

Sly Stone died last night at 82, but he wasn't the real Sly Stone for the last 55 years.

RIP

Sly was a bad man back in the day. That Sly and Keith Richards made it to their 80’s with their levels of self-abuse is miraculous.

Oh wow; a rough week.

Brian Wilson died today. One of the truly immortal, genius composers of any era, who was also blessed with the voice of an angel. His work will live on for generations and will be rediscovered and sourced for inspiration, and guidance by musicians and composers long, long after he is gone.

It's hard to encapsulate Brian Wilson in a few clips, but I will try to do so in two:

1) Angelic vocal and musical beauty: Surf's Up was composed and recorded entirely by Brian during a period of extreme mental and physical decline (and at a young age). His voice was still intact, and the all too real all-encompassing sadness is undeniable, with or without lyrics. If you only listen to one minute of Brian Wilson singing, make it this cut starting at the 45 second  mark:

2) Pop composition mastery...Good Vibrations. An orchestra, extraordinary tempo, mood, harmonic, and structure twists and turns, all presented in a package that the masses couldn't get enough of. By the time this was released and performed Brian was out of commission, but he wrote and arranged every bit of it. Sublime:

If it's possible to say the Beach Boys are underrated, I'm going to say that.  Beautiful music and melodies.  Brian Wilson the largest of the contributors was a true musical genius.  Well stated Stu.  Good Vibrations needs about 5 straight listens after work tonight.

There are so many extraordinary post-Pet Sounds/Smile albums that, thanks to musical revolutions and trends, never really got their due.

When y'all are done listening to Pet Sounds, Summer Days and Summer Nights, some Greatest Hits compilation (lord forbid - don't do that) and the like, take the time to listen to those 1968-1975 albums such as:

  • Friends,
  • Sunflower,
  • Holland,
  • Carl and the Passions,
  • Wild Honey, and
  • The Beach Boys Love You.

The cuts on most of these albums are about 10% clunkers and 90% flat-out fantastic.
