A Portal Decision Test Case

Recommended Posts

Let’s go get Indiana kids, 4*s, to make up our future teams.  Get the occasional lower 5* who loves IU.  Put together a basketball program that wins and is here to stay and Fu*k the NBA crap.  Who does that sound like?  Oh, it’s sounds like the guy who Painter learned from.  Some dude by the name of Robert “Fukin” M. Knight!  Don’t reinvent the damn program.  He left it for us all along!

All of those who, after seeing those stats said, “it depends” are correct, because stats like 3pt shooting and potential downside doesn’t always capture the upside of crazy work ethic, leadership, and culture setting. Even when the off-court stuff may be touchy.

Because those post-high school stats belong to…

There's a combo guard that is in the portal - lots of accolades.

Here are the career numbers:

  • FG .447 on high volume
  • 3Pt .329 on fairly low volume
  • FT% .837
  • A/to 1.5/1

What do you think @JSHoosier@Demo, @Trish, and others?

  1. Gotta have him
  2. No way - not good enough
  3. Not what we need, but a textbook Woodson recruit. So while it's disappointing, that's the type of guy we're ending up with
  4. Depends on the context

This is why context is so important.

Another player's career numbers:

  • FG .418 on high volume
  • 3Pt .362 on high volume
  • FT% .907
  • A/TO 1 to 1

I'd say just on the sheer numbers the player I am showing is equal to the player you are showing.  But more context is needed.  Level of competition, size, trajectory of stats (has there been significant improvement?  Any anamolies?).  How well does the player play defense?  Rebound?

Steph Curry?

Nope.  They are Jalen Blackmon's numbers.  That's why context is so important (and FWIW, Curry's shooting numbers were better anyway).

How about this player -- you want him on your team?  FG% 44% (high volume).  3 PT FG%:  31.4% (high volume).  FT%:  68.3%.  A/TO ratio:  about 1 to 1.....but it's 4.6 assists to 4.1 turnovers.

Mediocre A/TO, below average from 3pt, legal troubles, dad was an NBA friend of Woody, mom is nutty…

Stone cold assassin who demanded the same from his teammates.

Some kids just plain make it happen.

Ummmm......then the stats you were posting were against NBA competition.  VERY different.  Not exactly a fair comparison.

Sexual assault. No criminal finding. Civil suit settled without public comment. Not a recent issue. (Not Terrence Shannon).

I will add one more variable to this player's profile:

His dad had a mixed NBA/Europe career.
