Class of '66 Old Fart

(2025) - Maya Makalusky to INDIANA

Recommended Posts

HSE  with a 63-37 romp over Westfield.  24p;  3r;  1a;  2s;  0b;  1t       9-15 FG;  1-4 on 3s;  5-7 FT

Needs a lot of work on her ball handling.  Only had 1 TO but she had several instances where she was really sloppy with the ball but it didn't result in a TO.  Also she is a very passive rebounder.  Maybe it's by coach design that she doesn't crash the boards to keep her out of potential foul trouble but you rarely see her aggressively going for rebounds.

Last night, HSE lost its second of its last 3 games and their season record is now 18-3.  On the 16th, they lost 69-65 to Lawrence North.  Bounced back with a 76-72 win over Zionsville Friday night but last night but handily beaten by 74-58 by Center Grove.  HSE, LN and CG are all top-10 ranked regardless of the rating service.

Last night Center Grove controlled the game from the start and did a good job of keeping the ball out of Maya's hands and that of HSE's other offensive weapon Kennedy Holman and led 27-21 at haltime.  CG stretched the lead to 48-35 after 3rd Q and then the offense kicked in for both teams as they scored a combined 49 points.

Maya swished a deep desperation 3 at the end of the 3rd for her 19th point.  She then scored 13 more points in the 4th Q to finish with 32 on the night.  After making the 3 to end the 3rd, she went 3-3 in the 4th to finish the night hitting 6-9 on 3s and they were all deep.

Full MP stats for her last 4 games have yet to be posted --  Law. No., Zionsville, Center Grove and last night Indpls. Pike.

I watched the Pike game and I scored her with 19p and 6r.    7-13 FG;  2-8 on 3s;  7-12 FT.

She is just a junior so has another year to improve at the high school level.  As I've said before, she doesn't seem to be overly smooth and fluid in her moves in the paint or attacking off the dribble from the wing.  Her ball handling definitely needs work.  At 6'4" she seems to be a passive rebounder.  She definitely likes the 3-point shot but she does make them at a 39% clip.  When she does go inside she can finish with either hand; however, sometimes it seems like she really doesn't know where the rim is and just throws in the  general direction.  I watched a lot of Lilly Meister in high school and she noticeably improved from her junior year to her senior year and the same will  likely happen with Maya.

Mack and Lilly are both listed as 6'3" but I can't envision Maya being a player who lives in the paint.  By the same token, I'm hard pressed to see her on the wing at this point in time.

HSE defeated Zionsville Friday night 61-48 to advance to last night's sectional championship game vs. Noblesville.  The Millers led  for much of the game and by 9 after 3 Qs.  HSE got it back to within a single point before Noblesville pulled away for a 49-45 win.  Maya had 11 points in the 1st Q but could only manage 3 more the rest of the way.

It was the Maya Makalusky show in the Indiana Junior All-Stars 111-76 thrashing of the Kentucky Junior All-Stars.

The most exciting stretch of the game came when Makalusky drilled four 3-pointers in 2:14 to begin the fourth quarter.
