Commentary on his participation in last weekend's NIBC event.

Sunrise vs IMG:  Mikel Brown played his best basketball of the season this past weekend in Florida. He led the team with 13 points off the bench against IMG. He was aggressive in finding his shot, while also setting his teammates up. Although it came in a loss, Brown carried it over to their next game.   Brown had a team-high 13 points on 5-9 (55%) shooting, 1 rebound, 4 assists, and a steal.

Sunrise vs Wasatch:   Brown played a fantastic second half and helped Sunrise close out this game. He stepped up off the bench and hit timely shots and scored all 12 of his points in the second half (8 in the third quarter). He also got his teammates involved with a game-high 6 assists.  Brown had 12 points off the bench on 4-8 (50%) shooting, 2 rebounds, 6 assists, and a steal.

Make that 4 in 3 years.

Yeesh.

I was hoping that NIL may help to de-emphasize the basketball factory academies, but the lure of not having to do any schoolwork is too strong for many 16/17 year olds.

Overtime Elite might be exhibit A for why players should be able to go pro at any age.

Adam Finkelstein on Brown from this past weekend in Vegas.

That Friday night game against OTE was a stage for Mikel Brown to show his command of the ball.

Brown came up the ranks known first and foremost as a shooter. In the last year or so, he’s not only caught a significant late growth spurt, but he’s also expanded the scope of his command with the ball.

He has his handle on a string now and can whip passes off the dribble like only a select few others. He not only throws darts with both hands, but he throws them to all corners of the court, using his newfound size to skip the ball over top of the defense.

The key though is consistency and efficiency. Brown’s subsequent performances this weekend were not as dominant as his first. What’s clear is that when he approaches the game with a committed motor and values substance as much as style. His ability with the ball in his hands is off the charts.
