IUBB Starting Lineup

He is. You are right. But it’s his energy, knowledge, movement, defense that are his strengths like McRoberts, but Gallo is a great athlete. Like I say, its mostly his shooting. He offers a lot. But like McRoberts teams can kinda ignore him on the offensive end.

Galloway is getting 6 points per game in 20 minutes.  In 85 career games at IU, Zach McRoberts scored 6 or more points exactly 4 times and had a career high of 10 points.  There really isn't any comparison between the two on the offensive end (and would argue there isn't a comparison between the two, period.......Zach McRoberts had no business being on the court).

The best team in the league has a player for them that is playing over 30 minutes and shooting less than 30% from the floor.  He’s a senior and he impacts winning.  He is not their best player but I bet everyone on that team would say he is their most valuable.  Their record would not be what it is without this kid.

That’s kind of how I see Gallo.  I don’t care if we are 15-15 or 25-5.  Gallo should be seeing close to 30 minutes a night.

Why do we do this to ourselves? I'm guessing they also have the top center in the league and plenty of guards that shoot for a good percentage and for volume. I don't think anyone is saying Gallo doesn't have a place on this team. He absolutely does. Hell, he might be the closest thing we have to an actual leader on this roster. He does impact winning.

However, if he remains the same player (doesn't develop a consistent jumper) and we don't vastly improve the players around him we're going to remain around the lower middle tier of the conference.

Of course your last statement is true.  He needs to continue working on his shot (I don’t think he is a final product) and we need more talent or more improvement from current players.  But a lot think that we need to upgrade his position.  That if Gallo is starting and playing a lot of minutes that means we are not good.  That is what I disagree with.

I believe many on here are coming from a position that Gallo (in his current role and abilities) would be a perfect 6th man type of player. That means there are way more talented and productive wing players in front of him. Thus he enters the game to do what he excels at currently, bring energy and an all around game. He is excellent at playing angles and getting by his man, he is good at pushing tempo and getting stuff in the open court, he is good at playing pesky defense. These things stand out even more when these are not the strengths of his current wing-mates. That's why it is extremely noticeable right now.

He would then develop his shot and leadership abilities to play more of a role in the coming seasons.

I would argue that he's not the same player this year as last year despite not developing a consistent jumper.  I certainly don't remember him getting to the rim as much nor having the floater he shoots and he's definitely a better defender than he previously was.

In terms of not getting better if we don't improve what's around him, that's true of any player on our roster.  It's why you also try to upgrade over Galloway as well.  I just see him as a guy that is going to get his minutes regardless because of what he does bring.....and if he is getting 25 to 30 minutes next year, I think he'll be average in double figures.

Love his float game, he's been an angle player since playing his first game at IU. I don't think that's changed much. Maybe he's taking less threes and driving more. I do think he could be used better on the weak side to attack the rim and get teams in rotation for floaters, drop offs, or kicking it to shooters. He's a willing and able passer. He's shown that.

IF, this is a huge IF as always with IU in the off-season, other players develop to play on the wing (like actually becoming all around players capable of attacking the angles, hitting open shots, etc.) and Gallo stays the same he shouldn't be getting 25-30 minutes a night. It would be best if he just developed a consist 3PT shot to go along with his other skills so we're not choosing between a player that bring energy without a shot and players that just kind of exist in the offense.

Or it could be if we have guys on the floor that are more capable of knocking shots down, he's able to be the angle player.  There are a lot of moving parts.

Let's say we added a great knock down shooter to this lineup right now.  Let's say that all of a sudden Tamar Bates became a guy who was hitting half of his threes.  Who would you take minutes away from to increase his?   My gut says it's a combination of Kopp and Stewart first -- one who hasn't been hitting open shots and one who hasn't shown movement to get open shots and doesn't play defense.

He's getting more shots up in general -- about 40% more per minute than last year.   He's a more aggressive offensive player this year.

Gallo is more than an ‘energy’ player right now.  I suspect he will continue to improve in the off-season and he is a starter next year putting up good numbers. Although his game will always be more than about numbers because his presence on the court and what he brings makes the team better.  He should continue starting this season playing roughly 30 minutes a night.
