  1. Dark roasts general suck without lots of milk.
  2. No to Starbucks - that Redbird site looks gooood; may have to try a bag, especially since you got it within three days of roast - that's excellent. Variation in bags? Could be a bunch of things as you're probably aware.
  3. DANG your back yard is nice!

If I had a roaster: Daterra Sweet Blue RFA Green Coffee Beans - Coffee Bean Corral  Once you get into this site, check out the details on this bean and especially the comments.  I'd love to roast it just past the 2nd crack.  It may persuade me into getting a roaster.  hmmm....(insert lightbulb going on here...)

Thanks for the backyard compliments.  We have 1/2 an acre on a cul-de-sac.  Property is shaped like a traditional kite.  House is situated close to the street...kind of.  That makes the backyard huge.  We back up to a couple of houses with decent-sized backyards.  But one large back portion of our yard backs up to a neighborhood green space.  Both large grass areas and a dense tree portion all of which extends more than a quarter mile.

We've had all sorts of wildlife back there:  deer; hawks; red fox; you name it...no bears or big cats, yet.  In the winter people skinny ski...summer they play football or frisbee...I can hit my golf 3 wood and not hold back.

Got a small vegetable and herb garden going.  Know the species of all 300 types of plants, trees, shrubs and flowers around the yard.  Cut my own firewood.  And the wife thinks that shrubs are mobile.  "Just pop that bush out and put it somewhere else and plant this yellow rose bush there."  Yes, sure.....mumble...bad back...headache...hmmm...

My magnolia tree...

All kinds of wildlife… Try Texas lol. I live SW of Houston, wooded suburb with bayous, river / inlets. I’ve had an alligator, coyotes, wild hogs, and a cougar, to go with a skunk (that sprayed my dog, dear God the smell), snakes, and deer, rabbits, etc. The cougar flat out freaked us out lol

One of the nuttier ones was this ridiculous friendly duck that decided we should feed him

I'm one month into a five pound bag; stored what's not in the grinder in Ziplocs with the air squeezed out and there's no significant deterioration.

How have you liked your roasted beans vs what you used (and liked) before

Still have the roaster new in box. I have a 5 pound bag of roasted beans that I should get through by about mid-June. After that, I will report (mainly to @Dave from Dayton and @8bucks) how it went and whether it's fun, worth the effort, and gets me good results.

Stay tuned.

I, too, am on the edge of my seat.

Enjoying the first morning of a 5-lb. bag of fresh (medium) roasted (Wednesday) and fresh ground (today) Brazil Sweet Blue coffee!  Very nice caramel and chocolate notes and smooth.

Purchased online Tuesday afternoon for $66.35 for just above 5 pounds with free shipping priority mail.  Got here yesterday near noon.

Packaged up the bunch in quart ziplocks and they are stored in airtight opaque bag from Red Bird Roasters of Bozeman MT.  They do excellent email communications, fyi.

Wife is happy...just over $11/lb. and good tasting coffee.  I'm happy.

And well caffeinated.

And I would never-ever get coffee from Wendy's.  I never ever go to McDonald's unless it is to hit the restrooms on a long trip.  Well, that and their coffee is decent and the hot fudge sundae is ok. Maybe Market-Fresh sandwiches from Arby's while on that trip....if we can't find a decent deli or Mom & Pop cafe.  If ever in Dayton...try Charlie's Imports on Troy Street northeast of downtown...paprika is sold by the 5 lb. tins from Europe.

Big argument here is about Rally's.  Similar argument to that of White Castle.  Which would we rather skip?  I say skip WC.  She says skip both.  We compromise and grill at home some teriyaki chicken.

May catch 100 laps of the 500...later...

Like I said...well caffeinated.

All others please take note:

THIS is what a superior, random, insightfully excellent post looks like.

Just ground and pulled a double shot of some Brazilian myself. A little dark so I cappuccino-ed it. Two dogs and me are enjoying the moment.

Just home roasted my first half pound. Took ten minutes with no mess and no smoke. Will be grinding them for morning double shots by Friday.

They smell awesome and look purty:

I love my first cups of coffee early in the morning.  Where did you get the beans?  What is the type?  How do you roast?  Looks medium...which I would approve.  Do you only cappuccino? I only drip.  But I am seeing a doctor about that.

Anticipating another 5 lb bag from Red Bird of the Sweet Blue Brazilian.  Asked if they could roast it just a touch longer but not to the second break.  Trying to bring out a little more chocolate.

As to comparing it to other coffees.  I am not the world's best in tasting and describing coffees.  Having said that disclaimer...I do not like berry flavored coffees.  I like caramel and chocolate with a nutty nuance.  The best commercial coffee I have had are one from San Diego...I think that it was a Don Francisco Columbian...and a Brazil from Starbucks found in a grocery store.  But they have discontinued the Brazil from Starbucks...and I hate buying a Starbucks.  And those sit on the shelves for ever and a day.  Try one roasted this week and ground this morning.  I just use a cheap grinder and let others roast.  My daughter cannot deal with drip and does other things to her coffee.  Who knows what that is?

Columbian green beans from Happy Mug. About $6.00 a pound shipped. Went just up to the second crack. Smells like brown sugar. Medium roast for sure.

Roasted on a FreshRoast SR800, which I got a month ago. That thing is super easy to use. Letting it de-gas for 36 hours, and then it will be in my grinder and espresso machine.

PS; getting this out of the way in advance… bite me @HoosierHoopster
