IUMS vs Penn State 4/17 BTN - 5:00 pm ET

Recommended Posts

That was identical to MSU shootout in 2017 in every round to go to College Cup. PSU missed first two, made middle two and missed last one, we made first three and missed fourth which is 2017 to the last degree. Like Muse, Celanatano was fantastic making two saves. Only small difference was Muse saved all three and Celantano was helped with the blast over the bar on the first one. Otherwise round for round it went EXACTLY the same.

Very proud of team to have six straight Big Ten Trophies now and as was said if senior class can do it again next year they will be first class in long time if ever to not lose a trophy in conference.

It finally came to me what has changed since 2017. Its the goalkeeping. Muse and now Celanatano are by far the best goalies we have had since Jay Nolly in the mid 2000's. In the mid 2000's everything went right.

After Nolly left, we went through Chris Munroe, Chrisitan Lomeli and Colin Webb who were good but not fantastic and Michael Souderland and Sean Caulfield who are among the worst goalies I have seen. You also had Louis Soffner who was an interesting case. At the beginning he was as bad as Souderland and Celantano but he got better throughout his career and by his junior year was serviceable and his senior year was the best goalie we have had in that time till 2017 which is why we won a National Title in 2012.

To win at a high level in soccer you need both an elite forward and an elite goalie. In 2010 and 2011 we had the elite forward but not the goalie and in 2012 we had both which is why we won the national title that year.

Every other year till 2017 we had neither, which is why we struggled to win both OT and PK's. Since 2017 we have had BOTH an elite goalie and forward which is why we have been at top of college soccer again or close to it. The forwards have been Toye, Rennicks and Bezerra and the goalies have been obviously Muse and Celantano, all of who are pro's. Since 2017 we are constantly winning in PK's and Golden Goal OT's rather than losing them and those extra 3 to 4 wins a year are the difference between being pretty good and elite.

Congratulations IU soccer!  Was a fun and dramatic game.

Really have to give credit to Penn State too.  They absolutely were on it during the second period.

Excellent defense by IU.  My what a goalie!

The kicks were spot on!  Well played.

I honestly don’t get the reduction in teams

From what little I've read, reduced from 48 to 36 teams for this year only due to the pandemic and the season having been moved from fall to spring.  Interestingly, women's tournament will still have 48 teams.
