Class of '66 Old Fart

IUWBB @ Penn State - 1/7/21 @ 6:00 on BTN+

Recommended Posts

Women (5-3) (3-1) on the road against the Nittany Lions (3-4) (0-3).  I've not seen anything about the status of Penn and Cardaño-Hillary for this game but shorthanded or not, we can't let this game get away from us.  PSU is led by Kelly Jekot's 16.4 points per game and 7.1 rebounds per contest. Makenna Marisa adds 14.3 points, 5.1 assists and 5.7 rebounds per game. Maddie Burke leads behind the 3-point line with 13 makes and Johnasia Cash is also averaging double figures with 10.9 points per game. They are averaging 78.7 points per game and shooting 44.6 percent from the floor.  IU is one of the conference's leaders in defense this season, allowing opponents to score just 56.2 points per game through eight games. IU women rank second in the Big Ten in that category and their field goal percentage defense (34.9 percent) also ranks second.  After this game, women return to Bloomington to host Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon at 4:00.  This game will also be televised on BTN+

Halftime and our Hoosiers lead 33-30.  Patberg 13 pts; Holmes 12.  Gulbe and Berger each with 4 reb.  Berger only 2 pts. but she has 5 assists.   Women 41% but just 12% on 3s (1-8).

Patberg's scoring has been down the last couple of games but she's on fire tonight with 6-8 FG.  Cardaño-Hillary struggling in a starter's role as she's 0-5 FG but does have 3 reb.

End of 3 and with a strong third quarter upped our lead to 60-50.  Patberg 22 pts; Holmes 21.  Berger 6 reb; Gulbe 5.  Berger now with 11 assists.  Patberg and Holmes are a combined 16-20 FG.  Patberg now with a season high in points.  Cardaño-Hillary can't buy a basket and is just 1-8 on 3s.

Women leave Penn State in their dust and win 85-64 scoring 52 points in the second half.    3 standout performers.

Berger with the triple double:  15 pts. (13 in 2nd half); 10 reb; 12 assts.

Patberg with her best game of the season:  24 pts (10-13 FG); 2 reb; 6 assts.

Holmes 27 pts. (11-13 FG and a new career high in pts);  6 reb; 5 blks.

As  a team they shot 51% FG; 85% FT and a miserable 22% on 3s mostly due to Cardaño-Hillary just 1-9.

Comments made towards the end of the game suggest Penn may be out for some time and is scheduled for an MRI on Monday.

Team returns to Bloomington to host Wisconsin on Sunday at 4:00.

Easy win as expected and same should occur against Wisconsin. Until we get to the MSU and NW games on road we have no business losing and should be at least 7-1 in conference heading into those. Cool to see Berger have a triple double.
