BERRY COMMITS TO IUWBB FOR 2021
May 30, 2020 Jon Blau Women's Basketball Leave a comment
Indiana women’s basketball gained a verbal commitment from 2021 prospect Keyarah Berry on Saturday.

Berry, a 5-foot-11 guard from Rockmart, Ga., is the Hoosiers’ second commit in the class, which also includes Australian guard Paige Price. IU won out over Murray State, Alabama A&M, Seton Hall, and Georgia Southern for Berry’s services.

Considered a three-star prospect by ESPN, Berry ranks as the No. 100 recruit in the country. She’s very much a scorer, amassing a school-record 2,437 points in her career thus far.

IU extended its offer to Berry on May 12.

Below is Berry’s commitment video, which includes game highlights. From watching the tape, it’s evident she’s not afraid to shoot the 3.

We got her per Jon Blau:  5-11 guard from Georgia commits to IU women's basketball for 2021. She comes it at No. 100 exactly in ESPN's rankings.  Berry just received an offer from IU on May 12, so this was a pretty quick recruitment. The other four schools in her top five were Murray State, Alabama A&M, Seton Hall, and Georgia Southern.

Every player on the website with three stars right now is given an overall of 90 and a rank of #100 btw it's a glitch that happens in espn hoopgurlz sometimes

Yes, I quoted myself.

Her high school team won a game last night 70-57.  She had 35 pts; 6 reb; 3 assts; 5 stls; 1 blk.  For the season she's shooting over 65 percent from the field, 44 percent from 3 in averaging 35.1 ppg this year.

Rockmart lost to Cass 76-53 in the championship game of the Adairsville holiday tournament.  Keyarah Berry had 35 pts. for Rockmart.

Cass (12-0) is the #4 ranked team in Georgia class 5A basketball.  Rockmart is a 3A school.  Enrollment for 5A schools ranges from 1450-2100 students.  3A enrollment ranges from 950-1200 students.

Post-game comments from the Cass coach  --

Jackson noted that his players weren’t so much looking to shut down Berry, conceding that it would be an impossible task. Instead, he hoped Cass would be able to make her work hard enough for her points that by the fourth quarter she might be worn out.

His plan, which included double-teaming Berry in half-court settings, worked so well that senior star looked gassed midway through the second quarter.

“We understood that she’s so good that she could single-handedly — if we’re not careful — beat us,” Jackson said. “I’m proud of the girls. I felt like the intensity was there. They understood how good she was. Pushing two girls at her the whole game was the key, just trying to get it out of her hands.”

It’s no coincidence that the Colonels managed to gain control during those final few minutes of the first half with Berry a bit winded. Early in the second period, the game was tied at 17-all before a 22-3 run by Cass gave the team a hearty halftime edge.

“When you get someone tired — even when they’re great, which we knew she was — they sometimes will get in foul trouble, because they are tired,” Jackson said of Berry, who played most of the second half with four fouls. “… She’s probably, so far, the best player I’ve ever coached against.”

Berry has now scored 2,883p; 902r; 363s.  With 12 regular season games left she needs 456p to tie state record 3,339, 160 to tie 2nd 3,037, and 117 to 3,000.   [High probability she'll end up with over 1,000 rebounds for her career.  If this translates to the college level, we've got a really good one on the way.]

From the Atlanta Tipoff Club - How about ATOC Watch List honoree @BerryKeyarah this season?  So far she:

  • Ranks as a Top 5 SG in GA
  • Scored a season high of 50 pts vs. Ringgold
  • Averages 35ppg
  • Started the season w/ 2,437 pts and is close to becoming GA girl’s HS career pts leader

Supergirl couldn't carry her team alone tonight and Rockmart lost to Loganville 62 - 39.  Berry finished with 27 pts; 7 reb; 4 stls; 1 blk.  Learned that Rockmart's win over Lafayette Friday night went to OT with Rockmart rallying from a double digit deficit to pull it out in OT.

Per Jeremy Price Berry's now just 44 points shy of 3,000 for her career and he posted this video.
