Tracy Smith struggling at ASU

Who said he’s perfect?

The point is that your criticism is very vague. If he’s inconsistent, then you should hate Tracy Smith’s resume. Because it took him a long time to have any sort of success here. CL is in his 4th year. This will be his third tournament appearance in four years, and the one year he didn’t make the tournament was still a winning season. That is literally the best 4 year stretch in the history of the program.

And yes, suggesting that we bring back a coach who is about to get fired because of multiple losing seasons at one of the best programs in the country, and replace a coach who is about to be responsible for around half of our all-time NCAA tournament appearances, and who will have four winning seasons in four years here, is pretty dumb. You’re looking every tangible piece of evidence/result in the face, and just ignoring it. I don’t really even know what you’re basing your opinion on. It’s like you’re just making it up out of thin air.

Being inconsistent is hardly vague.  His teams have failed to live up to their potential because they either drop off at the end of the season or struggle to get going  hence tourney bids despite mediocre big ten seasons

And it's the best 4 year stretch and hasn't yielded a single conference title. Or second place finish  is have to give the Nod to Smiths last 4 years  2 first place finishes 1 second place and a CWS appearance where we didn't embarrass ourselves at all

Tracy Smith built the program that Lemonis enjoys and is the only person in my lifetime to take a big ten team to a college World Series

Has he struggled at ASU for sure. But that doesn't change the quality of coach he was here. There could be any number of reasons why he has struggled there.

He's the only coach to take us to the CWS....

Lemonis is our guy. Look at our in state recruiting. There is honestly no reason to want Smith back, especially at this point. We were literally a 2 seed last year and no expected us to make the tourney going into the year! I'm sorry but your definition of consistency is so off.

I still can't get over "in game decisions don't define consistency"... what wins you games?

Also.. getting Lloyd and Kaletha the last two years is still two just unbelievably great moves. Fantastic recruiting.

He's in year 4.. so in his first class he recruited Stiever, Milto, Fineman, Miller, Bradley, Herrin.. that's a great class. Added Kaletha and Lloyd to it. We should be ecstatic with Lemonis right now. Actually I am, just still scratching my head with why you aren't.

Because your being intentionally dense and not bothering to consider all that I have written because you are trolling.

This Tracy Smith hypothetical situation reminds me of Steve Spagnuolo and the New York Giants. He built their defense into a power that won the Super Bowl over an undefeated Pats team, then left to post a 10-38 record as the head coach of the Rams. The Giants actually did bring him back as DC four years later, but he was never able to re-establish what made him successful the first time.

I think Smith is a fine coach, I just think Cannon’s argument is absurd. We are doing quite well and he’s struggling. He’s actually struggling with the things he thinks that CL is struggling with.

Yes. Our program up until the last 8 years is historically awful!.. Lemonis is going to take us to 3 tourneys in 4 years and I have no reason to believe we won't be back next year. I really enjoy college baseball, and I really enjoy how we play. We play the right way.

You act like that isn't hard to do. We went 64 years between Big Ten titles and only have six in our history.

Nebraska's fans were convinced they would be a Big Ten baseball dynasty when they joined this league, and it took them six years to finally win their first title.

Just stumbled upon this thread....thought I’d give my take....

I was really disappointed when Tracy Smith decided to leave the program but I believe we made the correct hire.

I think a lot of us forget where Indiana Baseball was before Smith & Lemonis..... Lemonis has found a way to get us into the tournament 3/4 years and has a team this year that has legit World Series potential. He’s been a star everywhere he’s been. Indiana Baseball is one of the top programs in the nation as a school up north. That’s impressive. Lemonis isn’t going anywhere, nor should he.

I just fail to see how this is the best 4 year stretch when we had a stretch with two first place and a second place plus a CWS appearance.

Gotta convince the donors. Gotta have increases in salaries and recruiting budgets.

Looking at coaching salaries the truly elite coaches make anywhere between 500,000 to a million more than Lemonis. Depending on a few factors. Now granted these are coaches that have won CWS. Would be interested to see the salary we would dole out to a coach that won a CWS.

That and I would be interested in the budget for assistants at IU versus Florida or LSU.

ASU is 14-20 now. Hard to imagine he would have struggled this much there. It's not like he inherited zero players, and his recruiting rankings have mostly been top ten classes, even last year. It's also baseball, and despite small differences in coaching philosophies, the game is mostly universal in how you play it. Hope he doesn't come back to the Big Ten after he's done there though.

Has ties to OSU hopefully they don't need a coach.

We simply cannot pay what Florida or LSU pays for baseball. Football money goes a long way. With that said, we have nearly doubled our baseball budget within the past five years:

“When Smith was hired, IU had one full-time assistant and one volunteer assistant. Today, the Hoosiers have two full-time assistants, a volunteer position and a full-time director of operations. Bart Kaufman Field got a video scoreboard this year. Lemonis brags about the state-of-the-art Trackman system that allows his staff to analyze players and opponents pitch by pitch.

In 2012, the department reported baseball operating expenses totaling $1,263,199. By 2017, that number had risen to $2,215,515.”
