Tracy Smith struggling at ASU

I don't follow baseball as much but could you make a case that Smith benefited from a class of overachievers? Like Crean had when he coupled Cody, Yogi with Oladipo and a strong core of Hulls, CWat and Will maybe Smith benefited from the Scwarb, Travis group and made his coaching look better

Maybe those guys over-performed a bit, but unlike Crean, Smith was well-respected by high school coaches in this state and was very well-connected in the Midwest. Arizona has been completely foreign territory for him. Smith also pushed hard for the new stadium. The only thing Crean pushed for were Big Ten championship rings and banners.

Smith also had some success before the Schwarber group. His team's pitching has been terrible at ASU. Their walks per game is double what he had at IU, and combining it with a Midwest, small ball mentality with their talent level has been his undoing.

The question I have is how does iu stay a top program and doesn’t get their coach poached every 5 years to a top tier program ? Iu is currently ranked 11th In the country

Gotta convince the donors. Gotta have increases in salaries and recruiting budgets.

I think Smith was a pretty good coach and like mentioned had success previously to Schwarber/Travis. I have to think his style and recruiting are just not a good fit at ASU/Pac-12. It happens. If this trend continues no way he makes it past this season at ASU with the expectations on that program.

Wait, we can't complain about coaches but have to listen to what others post?

Shhhhhhiiiiiiit

I liked coach Smith. If he wanted to return to IU I'd give him a contract. Lemonis has been pretty good too.

No there's an ignore button. Utilize it.

You literally don't even talk about the reasons for you complaints.. you don't go into any Xs and Os or Jimmies and Joes... you literally just whine if/when we lose. That's lame as can be man. Aaron has been critical at times of Lemonis but he lays out his complaint and even here recently backed off quite a bit because of the teams success. There's no reason to be negative whem we have a top 15 baseball team and are likely to be a regional host site. How could ANYONE be critical of Lemonis at this point? That's insane... why not just enjoy it?

Well A). I have detailed my complaints many times. Listing my main one already in this thread.  Being inconsistent

B) being top 15 program doesn't mean lemonis is somehow perfect and absolved of criticism.

C) No lame is bumping a year old post and trying to act like some kind of genius.

I am far, far from a genius.. being inconsistent ok, how much more consistent can we be at 20-5? What should we do differently to be more consistent? He put Houston on the bench recently and Walker performed well, took Beauchamp out early on Wed and brought him back today. Where are Lemonis inconsistencies and where can he improve? I think Bradley needs some more playing time but I'm glad we're also using our young guys.

Sigh I'm pretty sure you are just trolling now but I don't mean Lemonis acts inconsistent. I could care less. His teams performance has been inconsistent and that's something that needs to stop.

I get what you're saying jesus.. I just don't understand why you're saying it!!!!! What can we do to be more consistent?!?! What moves should he make to keep some consistency?? I would like to see Bradley play some more at 1B and Dunham DH. I love our rotation and bullpen. Our pitching has been stellar.

Consistency over the course of the season has little to do with the decisions that are made in game. I don't know how you achieve it per se. I do know that good coaches do it though.

Maybe Lemonis has turned the corner IDK but I would still take smith back in a heartbeat.

Little things create big problems. I have no interest in Smith. I highly doubt we've ever had the depth on the staff that we do right now.

We are 20-5 and 11th in the country. Smith is likely going to get fired despite having a ridiculous amount of resources at his disposal. I like the guy, but he’s 13-14.

What you are saying is completely ludicrous and is exhibit A as to why fans should stay far away from trying to run athletic departments.

Who said he’s perfect?

The point is that your criticism is very vague. If he’s inconsistent, then you should hate Tracy Smith’s resume. Because it took him a long time to have any sort of success here. CL is in his 4th year. This will be his third tournament appearance in four years, and the one year he didn’t make the tournament was still a winning season. That is literally the best 4 year stretch in the history of the program.

And yes, suggesting that we bring back a coach who is about to get fired because of multiple losing seasons at one of the best programs in the country, and replace a coach who is about to be responsible for around half of our all-time NCAA tournament appearances, and who will have four winning seasons in four years here, is pretty dumb. You’re looking every tangible piece of evidence/result in the face, and just ignoring it. I don’t really even know what you’re basing your opinion on. It’s like you’re just making it up out of thin air.

It’s certainly a strange argument. He wants Coach A back “in a heartbeat,” over Coach B. Coach A is 13-14 at a baseball powerhouse, and missed the tournament last year. That’s the definition of inconsistency. Coach B is about to have his fourth winning season in four seasons, and could have a top 10 team next week. I mean…I feel like I’m missing something.
