TOM CREAN FIRED

Recommended Posts

Exactly!! This x100000!! He is an awesome person and the insults are annoying. I want a new coach, but I also want to see Crean succeed. Last night people wanting us to lose was crazy just to make his chances higher. If losing to Penn State was gonna do it now than the IPFW at #3 would've done it. I think it is 50/50 he leaves or stays. Glass will have feelers out there and if no one better than Crean wants the job he will stay. At least that is what I hope will happen. I think Crean has brought our program back to being a desirable job and I thank him for that as all you should. This isn't the same IU it used to be just like UCLA and UK and KU aren't the same. We may never get back there, but I hope we do.

UK and Kansas aren't like they used to be? Huh? They are in final fours on a regular basis.

My only complaint with Kansas is that they usually underachieve in March. You would think a team that has won 13 straight Big 12 championships (gonna be 14 this year) would have more than 2 FFs in that span

True but they have a national title and we are not even close be being at that level of challenging for a title. If we played Kansas right now we would lose by 25.

Although I agree, I'd take Kansas success, including post season every day.

Being a perennial top 15-20 team every year and a 1-4 seed would be my hope for the program. Championships take skill and luck but if you are a top 10-20 team every year, you have a realistic chance year in and year out.

That's my hope for IU.

I want Crean gone as much as anyone. Yesterday would have been too late, or a great day. But, I never wish for a Hoosier loss. I have watched them for more than 60 years, that has never crossed my mind.

Totally agree here. I don't want to see us lose ever but I understand why others do. It's quite the conundrum really.

On a side note I was looking back at some IU basketball cards I had from back in the day. The 92-93 team, which is my all time favorite team. There were 11 players on that team and 9 of which were from Indiana. I wish we could hire someone that would dominate in state recruiting again.

Oh I'm not saying I wouldn't take their success. I would take it right now without a doubt. But I'm just stating my only complaint. Other than that, they are every sense of the word elite

For the Sean Miller advocates he's probably off the board.

Arizona Daily Star:  Arizona extends Sean Miller’s contract through 2022

According to the Arizona Daily Star, the Arizona Board of Regents agreed to extent Miller’s contract through the 2021-22 season. The new deal also bumps up his current salary to close to $3 million a year (with $1.5 million as his base salary).

Miller is in his eighth season with the Wildcats. While he is still in search of that elusive Final Four appearance, reaching the Elite Eight twice since taking over the program, he has compiled a 208–63 record with exactly 100 wins against Pac-12 opponents.

On top of that, he has forced his way into the conversation of top recruiters in the nation. His 2017 class is headlined by DeAndre Ayton, rated the second-best player in the Class of 2017 by Rivals.

Any idea when his previous contract was set to expire? Curious as to how far out from expiration some coaches are extended

From last March when he was rumored to be headed to Pitt.  He received a one-year contract extension in September 2015 through the 2019-2020 season. Miller was guaranteed $2.8 million this year, according to the Arizona Daily Star

So in 2015 his contract would have expired in 2018-19 but was extended 1 year so the expiration would have been 2019-2020.

So when he was three years out it looks like contract talks started and then perhaps they pushed things out 1 more year. You could argue that the Pitt thing accelerated it. Now he is 2 years out and he was extended.

How far out does coach Creans contract go?

It ends July 1, 2020.

2020

Sounds right. I would have argued that Crean needs to be extended or relieved around 2 -3 years out. That corresponds to Millers timing. If this team and next year early on they shown some signs of life then Glass could always buy a year and extend him for 1 year initially.

I am not necc on board with that but we are definitely in that window. I had been thinking there were only two choices - extend or relieve but as with Miller in 2015 Glass could simply defer for a year. I am not suggesting that Miller was only extended 1 year because of doubt, as with Crean, but simply that a 1 year extension could also be in play here.
