I get what some are saying about the players being responsible. I'm not saying it is all on Archie, but we have definitely seen a few trends in Archie's time here. You cannot deny that our shooting percentages in general and especially 3's have decreased fairly dramatically in his time here. Add to that our declining percentages from the free throw line, and there is a definite trend. Few of us can say what is going on at practice, but from the outside looking in, it certainly seems like something needs to change. This team is definitely not a mentally tough team, and you can see the hesitation at times. They seem to overthink while on the court, but then other times act like they don't care. Again, not sure why, but this has been a definite trend in the last 2.5 years. If a team takes on the personality of their coach, I'm not sure what to think or when/how it is going to change.

But in the end, it is Archie. He is also responsible for the personnel.
-
Chris, do you think he starts against OSU? I guess, to me, that will be the first indicator that something has actually changed. Knowing how resistant Archie seems to change and that Green has started the last several, that's the first thing I'm looking at as to any actual philosophical changes being made.

How mad/upset would you really be?

I was just responding something very similar to this. -
I would think the only reason to change positions is because that is where he is expected to play if he makes it in the NFL.

I'm sure there is a certain segment of most passionate fan bases that operate that way, but I don't believe it is "Indiana fans." I will say that I wholeheartedly wanted Archie and was happy he was hired as our coach. I will also say that I have been pretty disappointed in the product he has put on the court. I'm not sure what the problem is except that I see the same players doing the same things game after game. I see the same mistakes made game after game. I'm not sure what the problem is; motivation? development? talent? But it's the coach's job to figure that out. Maybe outsiders should understand that we've seen this season play out before and suffered through an unprecedented 12 losses in 13 games before any changes were made. Maybe we are more than a little concerned that the way this team has played it's last few games, we are in for the same thing again. Maybe we are concerned with the lack of any adjustments to make anything any different. I've been a pretty die-hard fan of these Hoosiers since the first game I remember watching in 1980. I've spent an awful lot of money on games and merchandise over the years to be labeled as someone who is waiting to root for bad things to happen. I've seen plenty of bad things happen and continued to root for the Hoosiers. All I can tell you is that I couldn't stand to watch the whole second half of the Maryland game. I saw that game several times last year and the previous year.

Chris, I'm kind of curious - did this coach say anything about how much he would or would not like to play against IU or how easy they would be to game plan against?
-
I guess this is what it seems like to some. Personally, I don't sit and wait for bad things to happen. Every part of me wants Archie to succeed. But, what I've seen in his two and a half years is a lot of talk of a great plan, but nothing on the court that reflects it. He was supposed to have this great plan for recruiting and everyone was totally on board after the scatterbrained efforts we saw from Crean. The fact is, our guards or guard play have not improved in his time here. I don't care if it is the recruiting or the player development, we have not seen improvement. It's great to have a plan, but you have to constantly analyze the results and change accordingly. Our offense is just flat out hard to watch. Our defense is declining in year 3 - the year it was supposed to click. This team really has no identity and no apparent cohesion. That is what we saw last year as well. You are correct - I have absolutely no idea what is going on behind the scenes. But I know what I see on the court and it is not getting better. Last year it took a huge losing streak before changes were made. I seriously doubt that the administration is telling Archie who to recruit, who to play, how to substitute, how to motivate, and how to game plan. If they are, he needs to resign immediately for his own benefit.

Didn’t expect them to win today, but quite honestly, life is too short to watch whatever that was supposed to be. As I stated elsewhere, Archie inherited a fundamentally challenged team his first year, so it was easy to write that off. In hindsight, that team looked better than what we’ve seen since. There is just nothing that you can point to and say, well, at least this is looking up. It’s just simply bad basketball. How can a team from Indiana have no shooters? I thought we’d at least have a more intelligent team out there. I’m just not seeing it. Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners

I gave Archie the benefit of doubt when he took over Crean’s fundamentally challenged team. Gotta say after 3 years, not much is changing. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -
I so want Miller to succeed, but he has been here long enough to see the characteristic trends of his teams. He said when he hired that he wanted this system that could beat anyone, anytime, with little time to prepare. To me, he was saying something to the effect that his teams would play his system so well that the opponent didn’t matter. Just not happening... Defense is supposed to be our identity. Well, if we are hanging our hats on defense, there’s an awful lot of hats on the floor. His teams have been consistently bad shooting teams, which makes the offense easy to defend. If we aren’t getting transition baskets, teams pack it in. I mean, it doesn’t take a brilliant coach to figure that game plan. Our strategy of getting to the line has limited success because we shoot free throws so poorly. I think that because he has this mindset that his system is so airtight, he seems very resistant to make changes. He has said himself a number of times that they just have to get better at what they are already doing. This leads to long losing streaks because basically nothing changes. We also see the constant injuries. Why? How many times has he ever had his full compliment of players available? So as much as many of us want him to succeed, these patterns continue to emerge with his teams: Bad defense. Poor shooting. Ineffective offense. Injuries. Inability to make effective adjustments. Unfortunately, we aren’t seeing many positive trends. The hope was this cupcake schedule would allow us to be playing our best basketball heading into to the B1G. Nothing I have seen indicates much has changed from last year. Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners mobile app

Good for him - not so good for us, but it is a sign of success. Now are we looking for a OC and a DC??? :)

Coach Search 2017 IU Candidate: Chris Holtmann (Butler University)
bigrod replied to Hovadipo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
This is why I'm not totally buying Holtmann. He wanted nothing to do with this job because of the pressure, and he almost didn't take his current job. Obviously, that's all his prerogative. So far though, he has had really good success during regular seasons, but in the post season (when the pressure is on) he hasn't had much success yet. It'll be interesting to see how this season progresses. -
When? I’m not saying he won’t, but that was a thoroughly discouraging loss. I’ve known that his system would take longer to build. I’ve known that he has wasn’t exactly left with a full cupboard. I was willing to look past some of the embarrassing losses, hoping he was building something. He is supposed to be building a team that can play anyone, anytime. Wasn’t that what he said? Year three, first road game and that is the product he puts out on the floor? That should be embarrassing to all involved. Wisconsin is a team that isn’t very good offensively but our D made them look awesome. But at least we can be assured that if it happens say 11 or 12 more times, changes will be made. I guess I’m starting to lose faith. Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners mobile app

Thanks - I was wondering if I was the only one who thought some were creating things to complain about.

Didn't you guys learn anything from Crean? They're just positionless basketball players. -
I agree. I think many are not seeing this from his eyes. We have a pretty loaded front court. TJD is starting off well and most likely is here for at least another year. There's a lot of competition at his spot and going somewhere with little competition is probably far more appealing. I also agree with this: I don’t think it’s the tough/bangers league that is the issue, it’s the 2nd tier level recruiting. I just wonder if the second tier recruiting is a cause or a product of being a banger league.
