  1. The biggest problems with Archie recruiting Brown are Khristian Lander and Jalen Blackmon. It’s unlikely we take multiple small guards in one class, and there will have to be a pecking order. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
  2. Romeo Langford is the chosen prince of Indiana basketball and is leading the revival of a blueblood program Another really nice article on Romeo. Great stuff from Romeo and Tim Langford and Archie in this.
  3. I’m happy with the hard fought win, but on to a more important note... What did everyone think of Fox using the John Tesh NBA on NBC music? It felt a little weird with college basketball, but I’ll be damned if that’s not the best TV sports theme music of all time. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
  4. Did you watch Michigan play during Beilein's first 4 years? Check out their results below: 2007–08 Michigan 10–22 5–13 T–9th 2008–09 Michigan 21–14 9–9 T–7th NCAA Division I Round of 32 2009–10 Michigan 15–17 7–11 T–7th 2010–11 Michigan 21–14 9–9 T–4th NCAA Division I Round of 32 I wonder if you would have called them fighters then. Beilein didn't turn them around over night. I'm just as frustrated by our sloppy play, but we can't really expect this team to play like the Michigan team we see today at this point in Archie's tenure.
  5. I'm just not sold that athletic success has any meaningful long term impact on academic success. It goes without saying that most of the best colleges in the US are private schools that spend virtually no money on athletics. But even when we focus only on Public Universities in the Power 5 conferences (like Indiana), it's just hard to find much correlation between athletic revenues and academic ranking. Rank Athletic Revenue (USA Today) Rank Academic (USNew&World Report) School Conf Total Revenue Total Expenses 1 15 Texas Big 12 $214,830,647 $207,022,323 2 25 Texas A&M SEC $211,960,034 $146,546,229 3 17 Ohio State Big Ten $185,409,602 $173,507,435 4 4 Michigan Big Ten $185,173,187 $175,425,392 5 61 Alabama SEC $174,307,419 $158,646,962 6 13 Georgia SEC $157,852,479 $119,218,908 7 58 Oklahoma Big 12 $155,238,481 $132,910,780 8 9 Florida SEC $149,165,475 $131,789,499 9 71 LSU SEC $147,744,233 $131,717,421 10 53 Auburn SEC $147,511,034 $132,885,979 11 55 Tennessee SEC $145,653,191 $134,880,229 12 45 Oregon Pac-12 $145,417,315 $119,945,650 13 26 Florida State ACC $144,514,413 $143,373,261 14 20 Penn State Big Ten $144,017,055 $138,724,055 15 16 Wisconsin Big Ten $143,420,668 $142,930,591 16 51 South Carolina SEC $136,032,845 $129,317,382 17 77 Kentucky SEC $130,706,744 $125,333,866 18 41 Iowa Big Ten $130,681,467 $128,869,211 19 78 Arkansas SEC $129,680,808 $112,902,474 20 21 Washington Pac-12 $128,745,183 $123,503,513 21 36 Michigan State Big Ten $126,021,377 $117,506,272 22 96 Louisville ACC $120,445,303 $118,383,769 23 65 Nebraska Big Ten $120,205,090 $112,571,632 24 79 Mississippi SEC $117,834,511 $108,885,512 25 30 Minnesota Big Ten $116,376,862 $114,201,678 26 24 Clemson ACC $112,600,964 $111,126,235 27 120 West Virginia Big 12 $110,565,870 $89,196,193 28 38 Indiana Big Ten $106,139,192 $106,131,819 29 1 UCLA Pac-12 $104,106,646 $104,106,646 30 52 Arizona State Pac-12 $101,579,860 $98,825,395 31 97 Mississippi State SEC $100,062,237 $86,351,432 32 64 Missouri SEC $97,848,195 $102,409,131 33 14 Illinois Big Ten $97,447,731 $100,739,817 34 19 Rutgers Big Ten $96,883,027 $99,193,280 35 6 North Carolina ACC $96,551,626 $96,540,823 36 63 Kansas Big 12 $95,251,461 $94,709,233 37 23 Maryland Big Ten $94,881,357 $94,796,897 38 43 Colorado Pac-12 $94,226,111 $90,640,627 39 3 Virginia ACC $92,865,175 $100,324,517 40 81 Oklahoma State Big 12 $91,644,865 $89,833,094 41 49 Arizona Pac-12 $90,976,758 $91,756,963 42 2 California Pac-12 $90,976,576 $106,959,739 43 102 Texas Tech Big 12 $88,804,476 $86,984,083 44 31 Virginia Tech ACC $87,427,526 $90,716,423 45 75 Kansas State Big 12 $86,081,528 $73,970,354 46 18 Purdue Big Ten $84,841,133 $85,709,495 47 34 North Carolina State ACC $83,741,572 $86,924,779 48 57 Utah Pac-12 $83,672,639 $81,620,307 50 56 Iowa State Big 12 $82,659,447 $82,565,176 51 8 Georgia Tech ACC $81,762,024 $84,852,123 52 72 Oregon State Pac-12 $78,959,875 $82,730,626 53 74 Washington State Pac-12 $64,294,520 $71,801,820
  6. That's a much better argument, and McRobbie should be 100% held accountable for academics. My only point is the the president of the university should NOT be held accountable for athletic success... It's just a very minor portion of their responsibility.
  7. A university's success is not defined by athletic performance, it's defined by academic performance. IU has a $3.5 billion budget and just $100 million of that is devoted to athletics. Athletics is potentially profitable, but the revenue brought in from athletics is dwarfed by other revenue streams. The athletic department is a very small part of the president's responsibility, and while McRobbie should strive to make it as competitive as possible, at the end of the day it makes no sense for the school's president to spend much time concerning himself with something that takes up less than 3% of his budget. The school's mission and it's financial priority is to focus on academics, and that is exactly what it should be.
  8. Your own expectations were 8-9 non-conference wins and 13 conference wins... which is a 21-22 win team. That's a team that likely makes the tourney, but not with a lot of wiggle room. So I'm confused... do you think your own expectations were concerning? I'm not sure what Archie could have possibly done to infuse more talent into the roster for this year and raise that bar any higher. I am concerned about the on court product, but I'm not concerned about the general expectations, because they are completely realistic... a tourney team, but probably not a top 5 seed.
  9. Here's a nice and optimistic article on IU basketball and its fans from a Duke writer. This thread needs a little positivity... https://www.dukebasketballreport.com/2018/11/28/18115815/a-word-for-our-indiana-friends-duke-basketball
  10. The first issue I see with Smith's shot is he puts way too much arc on it. Getting that much air on the ball makes it tougher to be accurate and it decreases the likelihood that you get a friendly bounce off the rim.
  11. Good programs usually qualify for post-season play (don't just get close). If only we could readjust our standards for IU football to the Nebraska basketball "good program" benchmark, there would probably be a lot less complaining around here.
  12. Maybe he doesn't know where he wants to go. Maybe he has a favorite, but there are undetermined factors that could swing that decision. Maybe he knows where he wants to go, but realizes there is no reason to verbally commit before the spring. Maybe he knows where he wants to go, but is still determining how he wants to make the announcement. It's his timeline... Why rush it?
  13. Didn't see if this was discussed, but Archie made a significant tactical mistake by calling his last timeout between the 2 free throws. That allowed Arkansas to intentionally miss the second free throw and force us into a full court heave situation. You have to save the timeout so if he misses, we can call the timeout on the rebound and at least have a chance to set up an out of bounds play to go the length of the court. Unlike our last coach, I think Archie will realize the mistake and learn from it.
  14. Deron has to know the score and situation better. When it was clear the Arkansas player secured the rebound, he has to stop reaching and realize they have 2 seconds to go 80 feet. Maybe it was a tic tac call, but you have to be smarter in that situation. Just a very poor decision on his part. Luckily, it's a great learning opportunity for the team.
  15. I think the way Assembly Hall was built and the uniqueness of the seating plan makes it very difficult to make significant changes. There is really no space behind the baskets, as those areas are already abutting the lobbies. A balcony above them would look very awkward, and may hurt the view of people in the corners of the bowl. I think suites are pretty much the only option. As far as the sidelines, I think they literally get in as many seats as they can... unfortunately that means the view form the balcony seats is just not good. With that said, I think the unique floor plan is a big reason why Assembly Hall is truly special. There just isn't another arena in the country that looks anything like it on the inside or the outside. The second you step into the arena you know you are in some place different. The set up and acoustics allow the arena to get incredibly loud. Because the seating behind the basket is so limited, it allows the team to showcase the banners right next to the court ( and not up in the rafters). There are some things about Assembly Hall that could be improved, but overall I think we already have a pretty amazing arena to play basketball.
  16. I don’t think anyone arguing back and forth about this has nearly enough information to know whether Ellison was justly or unjustly punished. I don’t know why a statement from Ellison would hold more weight than the conclusions of a panel that investigated the incident, but that certainly doesn’t mean mistakes weren’t made or he isn’t innocent. It’s probably best to just wait and see if he sues the school and the results of that litigation before forming any concrete opinions. The assumptions of guilt or innocence based on literally no publicly available evidence is a little comical. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
  17. And this is why someone can be expelled from a university, while charges are never pressed. A prosecutor may not think they can get a conviction, but the school doesn't need that same burden of proof. If the school believes a student acted inappropriately and could be a danger if they remained on campus, they have every right to remove them. Some would even say that it is their responsibility to maintain the safety of other students. That doesn't mean mistakes aren't made, but the stakes also aren't nearly as high as they are in a criminal proceeding.
  18. Unfortunately Cody is a likely downgrade from Turner or Sabonis, and it would be very difficult for him to share the floor with either. I think he’s an underrated player in the NBA, but I’m not sure he’s a good fit on the Pacers. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app
  19. Sounds like a ringing endorsement of Lexington to me.
  20. During the press conference, Meyer never mentioned Courtney Smith's name once. When asked what he had to say to Courtney Smith, Meyer answered: "Well, I have a message for everyone involved in this: I'm sorry that we're in this situation, and, I'm just sorry we're in this situation." I'm still not sure if Meyer realizes who the real victim was. Hint: It wasn't him, it wasn't OSU football, and it wasn't OSU's fan base.
  21. I don't know about you guys, but free Buffa Louie's wings for 4 years would have sealed the deal for me.
  22. I can't get over how much he looks like Gary Harris in that picture...
  23. This is a really great move for JBJ. Play for one of the top teams in the Italian League, which is one of the best leagues in Europe (link). Get paid many multiples of what he was making in G-League. Play in front of 10,000 rabid fans nightly (link). Live in Milan.
  24. It took me until the spring to decide where I was going to college, and I wasn't even offered a spot on the basketball team...
