  1. A university's success is not defined by athletic performance, it's defined by academic performance. IU has a $3.5 billion budget and just $100 million of that is devoted to athletics. Athletics is potentially profitable, but the revenue brought in from athletics is dwarfed by other revenue streams. The athletic department is a very small part of the president's responsibility, and while McRobbie should strive to make it as competitive as possible, at the end of the day it makes no sense for the school's president to spend much time concerning himself with something that takes up less than 3% of his budget. The school's mission and it's financial priority is to focus on academics, and that is exactly what it should be.
  2. Your own expectations were 8-9 non-conference wins and 13 conference wins... which is a 21-22 win team. That's a team that likely makes the tourney, but not with a lot of wiggle room. So I'm confused... do you think your own expectations were concerning? I'm not sure what Archie could have possibly done to infuse more talent into the roster for this year and raise that bar any higher. I am concerned about the on court product, but I'm not concerned about the general expectations, because they are completely realistic... a tourney team, but probably not a top 5 seed.
  3. Here's a nice and optimistic article on IU basketball and its fans from a Duke writer. This thread needs a little positivity... https://www.dukebasketballreport.com/2018/11/28/18115815/a-word-for-our-indiana-friends-duke-basketball
  4. The first issue I see with Smith's shot is he puts way too much arc on it. Getting that much air on the ball makes it tougher to be accurate and it decreases the likelihood that you get a friendly bounce off the rim.
  5. Good programs usually qualify for post-season play (don't just get close). If only we could readjust our standards for IU football to the Nebraska basketball "good program" benchmark, there would probably be a lot less complaining around here.
  6. Maybe he doesn't know where he wants to go. Maybe he has a favorite, but there are undetermined factors that could swing that decision. Maybe he knows where he wants to go, but realizes there is no reason to verbally commit before the spring. Maybe he knows where he wants to go, but is still determining how he wants to make the announcement. It's his timeline... Why rush it?
  7. Didn't see if this was discussed, but Archie made a significant tactical mistake by calling his last timeout between the 2 free throws. That allowed Arkansas to intentionally miss the second free throw and force us into a full court heave situation. You have to save the timeout so if he misses, we can call the timeout on the rebound and at least have a chance to set up an out of bounds play to go the length of the court. Unlike our last coach, I think Archie will realize the mistake and learn from it.
  8. Deron has to know the score and situation better. When it was clear the Arkansas player secured the rebound, he has to stop reaching and realize they have 2 seconds to go 80 feet. Maybe it was a tic tac call, but you have to be smarter in that situation. Just a very poor decision on his part. Luckily, it's a great learning opportunity for the team.
  9. I think the way Assembly Hall was built and the uniqueness of the seating plan makes it very difficult to make significant changes. There is really no space behind the baskets, as those areas are already abutting the lobbies. A balcony above them would look very awkward, and may hurt the view of people in the corners of the bowl. I think suites are pretty much the only option. As far as the sidelines, I think they literally get in as many seats as they can... unfortunately that means the view form the balcony seats is just not good. With that said, I think the unique floor plan is a big reason why Assembly Hall is truly special. There just isn't another arena in the country that looks anything like it on the inside or the outside. The second you step into the arena you know you are in some place different. The set up and acoustics allow the arena to get incredibly loud. Because the seating behind the basket is so limited, it allows the team to showcase the banners right next to the court ( and not up in the rafters). There are some things about Assembly Hall that could be improved, but overall I think we already have a pretty amazing arena to play basketball.
  10. I don’t think anyone arguing back and forth about this has nearly enough information to know whether Ellison was justly or unjustly punished. I don’t know why a statement from Ellison would hold more weight than the conclusions of a panel that investigated the incident, but that certainly doesn’t mean mistakes weren’t made or he isn’t innocent. It’s probably best to just wait and see if he sues the school and the results of that litigation before forming any concrete opinions. The assumptions of guilt or innocence based on literally no publicly available evidence is a little comical. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
  11. And this is why someone can be expelled from a university, while charges are never pressed. A prosecutor may not think they can get a conviction, but the school doesn't need that same burden of proof. If the school believes a student acted inappropriately and could be a danger if they remained on campus, they have every right to remove them. Some would even say that it is their responsibility to maintain the safety of other students. That doesn't mean mistakes aren't made, but the stakes also aren't nearly as high as they are in a criminal proceeding.
  12. Unfortunately Cody is a likely downgrade from Turner or Sabonis, and it would be very difficult for him to share the floor with either. I think he’s an underrated player in the NBA, but I’m not sure he’s a good fit on the Pacers. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app
  13. Sounds like a ringing endorsement of Lexington to me.
  14. During the press conference, Meyer never mentioned Courtney Smith's name once. When asked what he had to say to Courtney Smith, Meyer answered: "Well, I have a message for everyone involved in this: I'm sorry that we're in this situation, and, I'm just sorry we're in this situation." I'm still not sure if Meyer realizes who the real victim was. Hint: It wasn't him, it wasn't OSU football, and it wasn't OSU's fan base.
  15. I don't know about you guys, but free Buffa Louie's wings for 4 years would have sealed the deal for me.
  16. I can't get over how much he looks like Gary Harris in that picture...
  17. This is a really great move for JBJ. Play for one of the top teams in the Italian League, which is one of the best leagues in Europe (link). Get paid many multiples of what he was making in G-League. Play in front of 10,000 rabid fans nightly (link). Live in Milan.
  18. It took me until the spring to decide where I was going to college, and I wasn't even offered a spot on the basketball team...
  19. We should be playing Kentucky every year, and it could be on a neutral court in Moscow for all I care. Just. Get. It. Done.
  20. Wrong Moye Stu, but I can still play the part... ROMEO WILL BE A HOOSIER... ROOAAAR!!!
  21. I guess cursed is a relative term... We won a big ten title 2 years ago, hold 5 national championships, and have one of the best young coaches in basketball. Must be a benign curse. Don’t worry boys, we will be fine with or without Romeo.
  22. This is pure speculation on my part, but I'm skeptical on the Vandy buzz earlier in the recruitment. There wasn't any smoke from anyone close to Romeo, and it seemed like it originated mostly from Vandy fans (or Garland) who were still high off of Garland and Shittu's recent commits. I think it's more likely that it was truly a three horse race for the last 6 months, and Romeo only made his decision some time after his high school season ended. I'm sure he may have been leaning in one direction or another, but the way this recruitment was handled throughout makes me think that any thoughts Romeo had were kept within a very small sphere and wouldn't become public until they had to be.
  23. I stand corrected... either way, I think they got it right in the end. I've definitely seen instances where two refs blow the whistle and make different calls. Normally they would huddle up, discuss it, and come to a decision. I doubt with under 2 minutes they are allowed to use replay to aid that decision process, since standard fouls and jump balls normally aren't reviewable. I still think they were going to replay to see if there was a tech, since there was a little scuffle afterwards.
  24. You can be a homer, but you’re better than this. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app
