Stupidest Miller Take - Crispin on BTN
moyemayhem replied to ramadden13's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Keep in mind that Crispin began his college career by playing two seasons for Penn State, probably the most pathetic basketball program in the Big Ten. He then transferred to UCLA where he rode the pine for the two worst teams they have fielded since World War II (look it up). It's safe to say that Crispin doesn't understand how to win and has no concept of expectations for success. -
Archie Miller Press Tour 2017
moyemayhem replied to IU Hoosier41's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Basketball is Archie's religion. -
I doubt his style (both coaching and personal) would translate at the NBA level. Tommy would be out of his element.

After having his first conversation with Archie, McRobbie said to Glass, “My goodness, he’s quite precise in his lexicon, isn’t he?” That pretty much nails it. http://www.indystar.com/story/sports/college/indiana/2017/03/27/insider-archie-miller-not-hiding-ius-sky-high-expectations/99701260/

Here's my 2 cents... I'm assuming there had been several feelers sent out to Stevens before Crean was fired, and his responses were probably consistent and that he was not interested. Given this scenario, I think it would be completely tone deaf and disrespectful for the university to open their first communication with Stevens after Crean was fired with a contract offer. It would appear as if we didn't listen to him previously and didn't care about what he said previously, which would likely turn Stevens off. There's an art to negotiations, and they rarely begin with a full court press.
-
While he might be well suited as a cheer leader or motivational speaker, I'm pretty sure he's made it clear that he still wants to coach. I anticipate that he will excel at a university with lower expectations. There are plenty of power 5 schools that will accept inconsistent results if it means having some very good seasons mixed in. If he goes to a mid major he could probably build a long term winning program, but I doubt he settles for that.

After Donovan, these are my top two choices. I think Marshall has the higher floor and Archie has the higher ceiling. Either can get us back to being elite, and our fanbase should be thrilled at the prospect of replacing Crean with one of them.

But this isn't how you're supposed to internets! Nonetheless, this should probably be reposted every hour for everyone's sanity.

Funny... this is how many of our fans feel too.

Don't worry, we're done joking about Brad Stevenson. All the recent talk has been about Ray Donovan and Steve Miller.
-
That would be reasonable if Glass had to pay the coach's salary out of his own pocket, but budgets for coaching hires tend to come from other sources. I'm pretty sure money won't be the issue if we can't get Billy D interested.

Analysis; How about Thomas Bryant?

TB reminds me more of a 32 year old Ewing than a 20 year old Ewing. That said I love his game and attitude. He appears to be a perfect compliment to our current team. -
I'm worried about in-state recruiting.

I was right there with you, voicing my concerns about his coaching style 5 years ago. Who knows, maybe someone can dig it up in the Scout archive. That second quote is where I completely disagree with you. His system needs very specific types of talent to be successful. He won't be able to find that talent in a 5-hour radius, and I doubt that he is a good enough recruiter to ever assemble the talent required (regardless of geography) to make his system consistently successful. -

GC, I usually agree with the points you make in these discussions. I am with you that all things being equal, I would prefer a kid from Indiana over a kid from Maryland. However, I have to agree with the others that our team's biggest issue isn't the geographic location of our recruits. It has far more to do with Crean's insistence on a single style of play in spite of the roster, his inability to teach fundamental defensive concepts, his inability to develop big men, his inability to recruit depth on the front line, his inability to make effective in game adjustments, and quite frankly the fact that he's a below average recruiter for a program of our stature. Crean isn't a good coach and he's not recruiting good enough players to overcome his deficiencies. Even if he had recruited more players of comparable ability from Indiana and the surrounding states, we would still be getting disappointing results, and it's primarily because Crean is too inflexible to coach to the strengths on his roster, which means he will rarely find success with middling talent. -
Tom Crean to Alabama Rumor Thread
moyemayhem replied to birdy_19's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Interesting... I'll speculate that Crean never bothered changing his wardrobe from his Marquette days. -
The OP's picture brings back some fond memories... I remember going to Bloomington for the 2012 game with Purdue. If I remember correctly, a friend and myself just happened to spot the Purdue bus outside the Hilton the night before the game (well, perhaps it was technically the morning). We had spent the night imbibing libations at the local taverns, yet at this late hour we could not find a suitable latrine to relieve ourselves. I'm not proud of it, but it looked like the lord almighty placed a target on that bus, and the only ammo we had readily available was biological in nature. After finishing the act, we ran off like a couple of children. The public urination turned out to be a good omen for the following day, as we won the game easily. Was it the mature thing to do? Probably not. But sometimes it's the little improprieties in life that help you feel young again, and provide memories for years to come.

He forgot one... Purdue - North Korea. Has delusions of grandeur, but in reality they find it difficult to repress the envy they have for their far more proseperous rival to the south. -

Loved it. So if Bob Knight = Napolean, does Tom Crean = Francois Hollande?
