hoosierbgh reacted to RaceToTheTop in College Bball Thread
At the minimum, Purdue will lead the conference in the ever important number of seven footers on their roster.

As you so ably point out, Dennis was really comparable to Galloway defensively. However, I think it is probably more accurate to say that IU wanted another strong defensive wing. IU's defense suffered noticeably during the games when Galloway was absent. While I wouldn't say that Galloway is injury prone, his aggressive style of play certainly lends itself to the potential for more injuries going forward. Dennis could have been another strong defender and an insurance policy against an injury to Galloway costing the team significantly on the defensive end.

There's a lot more to the game than shooting, and Galloway does almost all of the other facets better than any wing we have.
There was a reason we were winning until he got hurt, then we won when he came back from the wrist, then went on a swoon in February when he hurt the groin, and then finally started winning again when he came back in March.
The guys wins. The guys plays good defense, is our best play maker in transition, plays with pace, and creates and finishes at the rim.
He'll keep his regular 6th man minutes and pick up some of Phinisee's minutes. I really can't see any scenario where his minutes go down.
Bates will fight Kopp for the other wing minutes with Galloway in the mix there as well, and JHS will pick up Stewart's minutes and probably some of Phinisee's as well.

I respect everyone's opinion here. A lot of good reasons for what is being debated. I think CMW already has a pretty good idea of how he wants to use the guys we have. He recruited the incoming guys with a specific plan in mind. I think we will see a lot of them next season. From what I saw last season, CMW obviously sees value in both Kopp and Galloway. I don't think that changes. He also really likes the freshmen. It will be up the guys on the team to sort out the details over the summer and fall. I have to think the competition for playing time is going to be better than we have seen for a long time. That is a very good thing.

I like what I've seen of the kid but I'd be happy if he ended up even close to Zeller never mind Bird.

Almost all of that time was at the 4. Hey, I hope Geronimo can improve enough to play the 3 regularly. I like him. He is arguably the team's most exciting player. But he needs to improve to warrant starting there.

Woodson seems to like Kopp which obviously counts for a lot. Geronimo's play so far is more natural for the 4 spot. His ball handling and outside shooting need a lot of work but he seems to have a solid work ethic. I'm sure Woodson promised him the opportunity to play the 3 but he has to demonstrate he is truly up to it for long stretches rather than simply in relief. As mentioned, Bates would seem to have the best chance of beating out Kopp for the 3. We shall see.

Last year we had two catch and shoot guys - Miller Kopp and Parker Stewart.
There are multiple things to like about Miller Kopp returning to next year's team, especially over Parker Stewart and especially if he is not counted on to play 25 minutes per game again:
He was the pretty much the same three point shooter against P5 difficult competition as against low/mid-majors. Parker fell off a cliff when we graduated from cupcake games. Kopp’s 36% from three is still a good points per possession, and it seems like there's room for that to increase. He's a three, so his lack of ball skills is lessened and he isn't matched up against quickness. And he's long for a three. He's solid with positional defensive awareness and offensive floor-spacing awareness. His body language/attitude is always on point. Seems to be a really good locker room guy and a solid citizen. He's a close buddy of (at a minimum) Trayce (and Jordan G. and Gallo). Maybe adds just a tiny extra reason for Trayce to stay.

I still think he looked worse because he was playing with Stewart a lot and those two didn't complement each other at all. He's one of only two returners to shoot over 36% from 3 and is very good from the FT line.

hoosierbgh reacted to MikeRoberts in NIL and IU
It isn’t dying today but we have leaped closer to that. College basketball and football are no longer amateur sports, they are now pros. We will see a ton of change over the next 20 years that leads the game farther and farther away from what it has been as an ncaa college sport and closer to some hodge lodge of the nba or d-league.
we can all adapt until we all die… this isn’t going anywhere good

Would be absolutely shocked if this happened, but man it would be fun to see Izzo's head explode if it did.

Which doesn't surprise me and I believed was by far our biggest problem all year long... a lack of talent.

I can't even estimate the difference in what left and what was brought in, that is how huge it is.
Reneau+JHS for Durr+PS alone is HUGEEEE.

hoosierbgh reacted to BtownStrength in (2022) - SG C. J. Gunn to DePaul
I like Gunn quite a bit, but I think it will take a year or 2 to get to college contribution level. Also I am optimistic about Bates making a jump . Let's get the best roster possible.

It feels like it definitely could be. Either of those scenarios would likely be the end of it for me though. I haven't watched the NBA in years because both the on-court product isn't appealing and the entire organization (owners & players) are distasteful to me. I'm not interested in an "NBA, Jr" league masquerading as college sports. Nigel Pack took the best package offered him- $400k and a new car. That is completely understandable FOR HIM, I am a consumer that makes my own decisions and I can choose to participate in that process (watching games, buying tickets & merchandise) or not, too. Eventually a fair question will be "what is the point of having 'College' sports at all?" Why should state educational institutions be in the business of offering pro sport opportunities? If they are just another pro league, then fold them into the existing leagues and remove the pretense.
I don't know exactly where that line is, but it's getting awfully fuzzy and once it's crossed it might have some permanent ramifications.

It is what it is. I'd prefer this to having the only teams succeeding being the ones that paying money that wasn't allowed. The NCAA turned a blind eye to the blue bloods previously.
I wouldn't assume that businesses paying into an NIL agreement aren't making a profit off of it. I would say a lot of them are in the increased advertising and exposure they get.

And Purdud fans would have chanted “IU sucks” while Painter threw it pretty well but not good enough.
-
hoosierbgh reacted to Hardwood83 in NCAA MBB Transfer Portal
I agree with you, but just because there is an approved means to funnel money to players now doesn't mean the cheating will stop. Kansas, Duke, Kentucky etc aren't gonna let their advantage go away just because of some silly rules. Cheaters will cheat unless & until the enforcement & punishment make it too painful.

Sure one never knows, but Duncomb came in a top 100 ranked kid, no reason at this point I'm aware of not to expect him to put in the work. Race of course reclassed, but still a good ref point, he averaged under 4 points and boards as a soph, development...

hoosierbgh got a reaction from jk34 in (2023) - C Xavier Booker to Michigan State
The way I understood it, the friction started between Fife and Flip and then escalated when Flip's mom got involved in what was described as either an argument or shouting match. Could it have started as Fife simply downplaying the NIL or rebuffing questions about it? Sure, that seems plausible but the comments indicated that it became more than that at some point.

It was at Malibu grill. It became an argument that didn’t look good for IU. Flip was asking about NIL and was basically told he should be happy with a scholarship.
