What Does IU Need to Do to Get in the NCAAs?
NashvilleHoosier replied to Stuhoo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Imagine....if the way we got into the tournament is by originally being left out, a team having to pause b/c of a positive test within 48 hours, and we happen to be geographically convenient team to take their place (who I suppose would be considered part of the "strongest" teams left out). It's almost not even funny. -

Is that as far as you made it? If you truly need it spelled out for you, I also highlighted "It only exists to be fair." I highlighted the first sentence to be clear what the second highlighted sentence was referring to. If any additional clarity or explanation is needed, please let me know. -

Get lost dude. I literally said earlier in this thread I don't even pay attention to the women's team. I don't care who cares about them or not. If they weren't good, I probably wouldn't know who the coach even is. If you thought that was why I was calling his comment out, you missed the point. -

Just in case you happen to be filing things away somewhere in a folder titled "why do I get personally attacked on this board?" Put this in there for your next search of evidence. Oh, and I'd suggest never showing your daughter what is in that folder. -

Oh yeah, I totally agree. Aloha asked will the administration allow a new coach to operate in the free agency market like he would want to (or something to that effect)? My response was the doomsday scenario where if we fire Archie and several players leave before hiring a new coach. If the admin put restrictions on how a new coach could operate when he'll immediately need to find half of a roster, that could be a big deterrent. In other words, would the administration hinder the ability of that mass entrance? Yes, the more likely scenario is that players stick around until they know who the next coach is. And a compelling coach could keep players around and effectively fill in the roster gaps. Also, for the record, I'm not advocating to not make a move b/c free agency will make it harder on a new coach. Just that it's a helluva interesting wrinkle added to the possibility of changing coaches. Further, the snowflake in me wants to go back and change all of the times I said "he" to "he/she" to not make any assumptions. And now that those wheels are spinning, what about the unprecedented move no one has mentioned yet? Is our next coach already roaming the sidelines as a head basketball coach at Indiana University? (I know very little about the women's team besides the fact that they are pretty good under Coach Moren). -

I'm making the assumption that a mass exodus is far less likely in an offseason that isn't the free agency type offseason this upcoming offseason will be. So, a normal offseason where players have to consider sitting out a year. -

This is one of the reasons making a move this offseason scares the crap out of me. 5 or 6 players leave, none of our true top targets are coming anyway, and our next set of targets are told they don't have as much freedom in the transfer market as they need so they all pass. We end up with.....oh man, I don't even want to think about it. -

The free agency thing adds a whole new wrinkle. If we make a move this offseason, how many of our current players bolt knowing they can play right away elsewhere? Would a new coach hesitate b/c he has to find half of a roster to even get started? Of course the flip side there is....is it more appealing b/c free agency allows a new coach to start building the roster how they want right away? Very interesting. -
What Does IU Need to Do to Get in the NCAAs?
NashvilleHoosier replied to Stuhoo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
My comment may have been confusing now that I read it back. I meant to say we will definitely lose 3 in a row before this team ever wins 3 in a row. And I agree with you. They looked like they were just toast last night. A shame b/c we threw a hell of a first punch, but as soon as we got punched back, we seemed content to just roll over. Michigan may end up demoralizing us to a point we can't recover from. -

If this team is gonna break the streak of not winning more than 2 in a row or not losing more than 2 in a row it will most definitely be losing. -
Bub knows a guy? Of course he does.
-
Exactly. It's not like a bunch of people heard a rumor and tweeted him asking if he's heard anything. If that was the case, and at that point he said something like "yeah some news is coming, not great, but it's not my place to spill the beans" that's different. Questionable still but different. He consciously made the decision to put that out there in that manner. Super lame.
-
How can this guy not separate the fact that whatever kind of info people come to him for...whether it's right, wrong, sourced or not, his tweet didn't serve anything close to that purpose. It served no other purpose than to whip people into a frenzy. If he wants to be somebody that people seek out information from, that was simply a dumb move.......unless you simply just crave the attention. It was dripping with the notion that he ran to twitter to put that out there so people would be salivating for him to give more info. The fact that instead of having some humility and owning that he shouldn't have done that, he seeks out and screenshots comments from various message boards (that he doesn't post on remember!!) and attaches them to a plea for people to tell him "oh please don't go!!" just proves the attention craving. Get over yourself, pal. You can "send prayers" privately w/o feeling the need to tweet that with no context when you knew exactly what it would do.

I can be at Nick's by tipoff tonight to help flesh this out. Yeah it's only a 4.5 hour drive but I need the other 6 hours to figure out how to tell my wife and kids I'm gonna be gone for a few days planning the kidnapping of our next basketball coach and that this is actually a good thing b/c Daddy will not be near as cranky reading bedtime stories after he just spent 2 hours yelling at the TV. If there's even a sliver of hope that this happens, first round at Big Woods is on me after the game. -

They are only 6 spots from being a quad 2 team. Their remaining schedule is brutal besides that one home game against the listless Indiana Hoosiers :-(. If they do go on a run, they'll definitely be a quad 2 team. Stanford has been hovering in the high 50s for a while. They probably need a run in the Pac12 tourney to jump above 50. -

And for the record, in regards to ^^^, I think there is a higher likelihood we win ALL 3 of the other games than there is that we beat Michigan. -

It's been updated, and we are now #43, last 4 in. So no chance just winning 1 more game keeps us there. The only possible scenario it does is if the 1 win is Michigan, MSU goes on a run and becomes a quad 2 team, Maryland remains a quad 1 win and Stanford finishes strong and becomes a quad 1 win. I think that would make 5 quad 1 wins. It's a maybe at that point. We need to just win at least 2 more. -
Indiana at Michigan State game
NashvilleHoosier replied to RaceToTheTop's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I'm just glad the conference didn't take my idea of scheduling a back to backs on Sat/Sun. The momentum Sparty had combined with this fragile minded team of ours....we would have lost by 40 on Sunday. -

This was last updated on Saturday morning, before we took a quad 3 loss. We will undoubtedly drop in this projection, but likely still in the field as of today. Winning 1 more game will leave us at 13-14, 8-11 in conference (unless our one win is our first BTT game, in which case we'd be 7-12 in conference). I don't think we are dancing in that case. -

My post was a joke. The may get fired thing was in reference to Stevens from earlier posts in the thread. I was referring to Beard with the "may want to join his best friend..." thing. -

Yeah that's a heck of a quote to put out there if you are indeed ready to be back on the sidelines. Kudos to him for being honest about it though. And I may be wrong, but the Wichita St. thing was only intended to be interim right? B/c Marshall was fired so close to the season, they didn't have many options. Again, I could be wrong there. -

Alright we gotta stop. The 2 candidates who definitely aren't coming (Stevens and Beard) all of a sudden might get fired and want to come home, and may want to join his best friend (and mentor?) in Bloomington, respectively. It's Monday morning after a devastating loss....our hearts aren't ready for this roller coaster, buddy. -

I had no idea what his health problems were, had only heard about health problems. A quick google search came across this article: https://www.sportingnews.com/us/ncaa-basketball/news/thad-matta-health-issues-fired-ohio-state-basketball-gene-smith-replacement/1ukvoms8p6h341fluuxdaat6uf It would be pretty easy to directly correlate the decline in his health the decline in his coaching performance at the end at OSU. 4 years later and he's not yet coaching again makes it a huge question whether he's improved enough to consider it. And to what degree his "improvement" can be linked to the fact that he's just simply not out performing this incredibly demanding job anymore. It's a hard no for me until there is definitive proof he has made significant health improvements. I feel for him as his incredibly promising career was derailed b/c of something out of his control. But we can't be the guinea pig to see if he can perform at that level again. -

Seeing Howard have a guy like Martelli on the bench makes me really wish we had experience like that on ours. I'm not sure how often a guy with that level of head coaching experience who was well respected ends up as an assistant in the twilight of his career....likely not often at all. But assuming that the prevailing thought that Archie is here to stay for at least one more year is true, how valuable would some experience like that as an assistant be? I don't see it happening, but it's an interesting thought. Is there a guy who has that high level, well respected experience that, say....lives not too far away? Not sure. It would be kind of Thad if there were no changes at all to the staff. Then again, if there were, would it even Matta? (for what it's worth I have NOT been in the camp of bringing Matta in as the HC after 4 years away, but an assistant? Sign me up!) Also, yeah I know, he wouldn't' take an assistant job. -

It wasn’t just one thing for me but the moment I made a big mental turn was the Purdue game. The looks on their faces and their demeanor the whole game was that they already knew they were going to win that game. So much more ready and prepared. There is the laundry list of everything else we all discuss that was already boiling beneath the surface. But that game was the straw.
